Toronto is basically the center of Canada's universe being the biggest and most expensive city to live in. I spent 7 years living downtown Toronto and have mixed feelings of whether it is somewhere I would come back to. Join me for a walk down memory lane with a tour of the city, some of my favorite places and talk about the changes that have happened in the last couple of years.

Travel Medical Insurance I use:
Get 5% OFF Hey Mondo: heymondo.com/?Affi...
SafetyWing (best for younger travelers + digital nomads): safetywing.com?referenceID=alinamcleod&Ambassador
I use both of these companies depending on the destination and requirements of entry. If you are going to be abroad for a long time and/or don't need as much coverage, I would recommend SafetyWing. BUT you cannot purchase SafetyWing WHILE in Canada or USA. You can only purchase once already abroad. Hey Mondo is more expensive but offers a higher level of coverage including plans that have trip cancellation/interruption insurance. Hey Mondo would be the better insurance to use if you need travel medical insurance when applying for a visa. Both companies cover covid. I am an affiliate for both companies, but I pay for my own policies.

My first move to Canada was Vancouver. The company I worked for closed the Vancouver operation and moved me to Toronto. I was so depressed. I absolutely hated Toronto!!! (coming from Vancouver). In summer I discovered competitive sailing, In winter I was able to ski. I have driven my car to New York city, Washington DC and others some 20 times now and most of all found and married a wonderful woman. We bought an amazing apartment and slowly my life changed. I took up wall climbing (with my wife), started a business (that after 10 years eventually failed in Covid). Got a decent job again..... . After 17 year, I have watched Toronto go through so many changes. . Some time back I went to my home country (on holiday) and came back to realise that Toronto truly is my home. I came to realise - Toronto has taken care of me. For all the bad - you have given me so much more good. . Thank you Toronto.

I can fully understand that leaving Vancouver for Toronto must have been quite a shock. I knew someone who moved to Toronto from the USA for work and spent at least 10 yrs there, only to be forced by his company to move out to Calgary. He was not happy and I think he only lasted a few years in Alberta before he moved back to Toronto.

@@drakelang8342 I have lived in both Mtl, Calgary and TO... I grew up in Calgary actually and it is basically just an extremely depressing city. The whole city feels like a version of Longueuil or an endless suburb with no culture.

You mention about being intimidated by Toronto when you first moved there. I grew up in Petrolia, Ontario... about 3 hours south west of Toronto... at the time my town's population was about 4800... then moved to TO in the mid to late 70's... it was like moving to a different country. First time I ever rode a Subway.... subway came along, everybody crowded towards the doors, I held back, I didn't mind being the last one on... the doors shut, and I was still on the platform. It was a crash course in getting around. I also went there to be an actor... in 2.5 years I managed to be an extra on 3 CBC TV shows, and also an extra on 3 movies, 2 of which actually were released commercially. I finally concluded I did not have what it took to make a living acting.... so if I was going work in a factory, I could do that at home. But absolutely no regrets trying. I enjoyed your video Alina, as always.

As a resident nice to listen to your observations after visiting again. Real estate prices worldwide seem out of control and although I am a homeowner for the health of the market I would like to see a 50% drop in prices for the sake of all the many who deserve affordable living costs. Thanks for featuring that nice Ethiopian restaurant, must try it.

Thanks for the wonderful film footage of Toronto. I was born and raised in the city and loved my time in the downtown when I attended the University of Toronto. However, I left for a teaching job in BC in the late 70s and then moved in the opposite direction to Nova Scotia where I still live. Perhaps you could visit Halifax and the wonderful seacoast of Nova Scotia where everyone lives no more than a short jaunt to the ocean. Safe travels in Colombia. My daughter spent a month there in 2018 and really enjoyed it.

Great video footage, the best i have seen you do. Great work, Alina. The aerial and time lapse stuff is top notch. I have been to Toronto a few times, but not for many years. By the way, I love your honesty about your life's arc and Toronto's place in it. You have come a long way. I was first attracted to your stuff about N Macedonia (having biked around much of Lake Ohrid myself) and hiking to the spring in Albania. I look forward to your future adventures. Someday I hope you have a chance to bring your skills, attitude and intelligence to bear on a neighborhood or region you can settle in and call home for a while. I'll bet you will tell some great stories about that experience, as well as your world traveling. Closing, if you are not already familiar, I recommend Dervla Murphy's books.

2nd comment. I HAD to watch this again! The video montages and music pairings were SO GOOD, like at 11:18. I’m sure you are the main talent in this, Alina, but is Misha behind the scenes again this time? Super editing job, guys! I even notice that you timed the guy walking, his stepping pace, to the beat of the music! The song “All Emotions” by Daniel Gunnarson fit the emotional content of the segment, hoping for better times ahead after the pandemic had taken its toll. Having done a fair amount of video editing myself, Alina, I love your sensitivity and how you blend all of these elements together. Again, great job! I’m hungry for more!

Really enjoying your content; very down-to-earth, not gimmicky, and just real. Please don't change that. Visited Toronto for a long weekend several years ago. As a traveler, my least favorite thing was the traffic getting into the city. My favorite thing about the city was just how eclectic and diverse it was, yet it all still seemed to gel together. One minute you can be in the bustling business district, the next Chinatown, and another turn puts you a small quaint neighborhood. The most important thing I learned was don't use the Tower as a visual bearing for your location; 6 miles and an extra hour later, I got back to my hotel and still curse that Tower to this day.

Nice video Alina, you have many talents. My only trip to Toronto was the airport in 2017 on a return flight from Kyiv to Salt Lake City. Same thing for my wife she came through the Toronto airport in August of 2020 on a flight from Kyiv, her experience at the airport was a bit negative because they herded the international travelers like livestock through the airport because of Covid, I couldn’t even get her a direct flight to Salt Lake City at that time and had to pick her up in San Francisco, but we still had a nice drive up the Pacific Coast through the Redwoods and the coastal area of Oregon. Cheers from my wife and I from Utah to you, have safe travels in South America, enjoy that warm climate.

Its always somewhere you could go back to at some point. No need to make that decision now. You can travel the world explore all that it has to offer and at some point settle and figure out your long term plans. Always best to just take things as they come. you will appreciate things more once you have more experience from your travels. Travel after all is one of the best educations you can get.

I moved to Toronto in '76 as a kid with my parents. The house we lived in was bought for $65,000 and sold 15 years later for $120,000. Twenty years after that, today, it sells for $800.000, something is not right. Bytheway, I recognize those walking paths at High Park, I used to skateboard on them, 35 years ago and I haven't been back since.

But how much can you buy if you got $1 now and how much could you buy with it back then ?

Great video Alina! Wow on the time lapses! I am in Markham and not sure if it's worth it to live closer downtown. Safe travels in Columbia!

Thanks for the memory! Moved to Toronto in 1971. As a prairie boy from Saskatchewan this city was exciting to be in although in those days "Toronto the Good" rolled up the sidewalks at night and on Sundays Frans Restaurant was the only restaurant where one could get a meal. Have since moved back to Saskatchewan because retirement and divorce meant I could either pay rent or eat, couldn't do both. Small town life is good though I miss the bustle of the city.

I`ve never seen black squirrels before your last video. I`m from Vermont and they look like our fisher cat. Just an observation. Great video.

I remembered when I used to take the street carts to U of T, queen street, and Korean and China towns; they were so many people there. Now it looked so clean and nature.
