Some scenes of the Toronto TTC Subway System as it looked back in 1980. H-1 and H-5 as well as G-1 Gloucester trains can be seen in this vintage film shot by David Williams.
David Williams was a transit enthusiast who travelled around the world to film and capture many different transit systems, including the TTC in Toronto.
These unique Toronto subway views give us some rare looks at life on the TTC in the 1980s.

So awesome guys! I grew up in Toronto, in 1980 I was 15, and had been fascinated by the TTC from the first time I rode it in 1972. The time of these films is right in my nostalgic wheelhouse, so thanks for giving me some warm fuzzy feelings

This just popped up on my recommended list! Really enjoyed it! I have lived in Toronto my whole life, so have ridden every model of subway car! I did not remember the 4 car sets of the H1-H5, but do remember 4 car sets of the G's. With the G's, 4 car sets only ran on Sundays. No, I cannot imagine 4 car sets today, would be super crowded now!!

Seeing the mixed H1-H5 sets was very interesting. Didn't know they ever did that. I wonder why they did it. Also 4 car sets on line 1 nowadays would be impossible lol

Bruh, those H5s are shiny like the T1 Cars in the mid-90s. I wonder how a mixed trainset like the H1/H5 we've seen would've sounded like? Probably more "H5 heavy" at least from the platform position. I wasn't even born yet when TTC practiced 4-Car Trainsets in the 80s & even if they still did them after 1990, I probably wasn't riding the subway enough to experience that, except for Line 3 but that'll soon be history. Chances are the new Ontario Line might do 4-Car Trainsets.

I wish this film had sound, it would be cool to hear what they sounded like working together. Unfortunately it was a silent film so we put on some music so it wouldn’t sound too awkward. I can’t imagine 4 car sets on Yonge today. That just shows you how much Toronto and the TTC has grown over the years. Thanks for watching and the comment!

The subway use to have a smell to it. Now it’s gone lol it was probably the trains.

Nice. I remember that era well. I loved the Gloucesters best. Also, I wish they didn't get rid of the original 1950s mint green vitrolite tiles at Davisville. I hate the brown crap that's been on since just after this was filmed.
