TORQUE vs HORSEPOWER Explained In Less Than 3 Minutes

Torque and horsepower are two important concepts in the automotive industry. If you need to move big loads, you need torque. If you're in Formula 1, you care about speed. In both cases, you need horsepower. If you want a fast 0-60, you need torque, and you need to hit it quickly. So, many factors go into determining a machine's performance, hopefully I explain it here a little more clearly.

Out of all the courses so far, machine elements was my favourite (kinda regretted I didn't choose mechanical eng.). I did well on it, but now I really have a clearer grasp on the real meaning of torque and power so thanks a lot for this concise explanation. And keep doing the vids, they are awesome 👍

It's torque vs power, or lbf ft (Nm) vs horsepower. You're mixing up units and physical quantities here. Also power does not equal torque times speed but is merely proportional to it.

Torque at wheels is important, torque at crankshaft is largely irrelevant in theoretical discussions like this since gearing makes up difference. Two engines with XXX HP have same potential to make torque at wheels, I don't care if one has 2000 ft lbs and the other has 300 ft lbs, HP is all that matters. Now there are some practical nuances with engine longevity, heat, power transfer, etc

Thanks. I have long felt that I didn’t have a good grasp on the torque vs horsepower issue. As I was watching/listening to your video I kind of crystallized fie me (I think). Let’s see: Horsepower determines how fast you can go (eventually). Torque determines how long it will take to get to some speed. ??? So horsepower tells us about speed but torque tells us about quickness. ???

Hey Wissam, what’s up. Love this video just like everything else you put out. I’m a first year engineering student and I plan on doing mechanical engineering after I transfer from my local community college. Hey, so I wanted to talk to you about something that might sound a little dumb. 😅 For a while I’ve been thinking about getting a dual degree in mechanical engineering and mathematics or at least a math minor from the four year school i plan on transferring to. The reason why is that at my school mechanical engineers take calculus 1-3, differential equations and numerical analysis which is already a great background in mathematics but we aren’t required to take things like linear algebra or partial differential equations - things that I’ve heard are good to have a background in for mechanical engineering. Another reason why I’ve thought about this is that I plan on going into aerospace engineering (via a masters program) and I’ve heard it’s one of the most math heavy industries in engineering. I just thought maybe a math degree would greatly prepare me for an industry like this because I’ve heard it can be really challenging. My ultimate goal is to work as an aerospace structural engineer at NASA (knock on wood). 😅 If one of the first things you were to mention is “it’s going to cost more money, maybe just stick to your main major,” that is something I’ve thought about but in my [U.S.] state they help to pay for college if you go down the “college path” in high school and i also plan on joining my state’s national guard and here you get 100% tuition exemption. I’ve honestly been planning out this whole dual degree for sometime and it does seem possible to be able to pull this off with just an extra year of school. I don’t know. I just wanted your feedback since you currently work in the aerospace industry. Anyone else who sees this feel free to comment. I’m open to feedback. 🙏

@WissamSeif
@WissamSeif 10 месяцев назад
I think horsepower and torque are both needed for acceleration. You can deliver whatever required torque or speed that you need at your wheels with your gearing. Teslas and EV's have great acceleration b/c electric motors hit their peak torque immediately. That's another aspect; a 300 HP combustion engine is it's peak power. It takes time to reach it, whereas an EV hits its maximum torque immediately, and thus has more torque and HP off the get-go. At higher speeds, HP becomes more important.

Strange. Still confused .The motor in both models have the same torque and horsepower. The torque and horse power has been modified with gears. Saying two vehicles have different powers should not be measured anywhere but at the crank shaft. What you do with that power afterwards is up to gearing. Only motor design really changes horse power and torque?
@WissamSeif
@WissamSeif 7 месяцев назад
They shouldn't have different power since it's the same motor for both. Gearing will change the torque and speed at the wheels. So yes you're right, I should've said this vehicle has more torque at the WHEELS than this one because of the different gearing.
@IgorArkin
@IgorArkin 7 месяцев назад
Video is faulty like most of the videos on topic. If a cars "gets of the line faster" than the other, it is because its power to weight ratio is higher, with no other option possible. Simply by definition of power. These electric motors have a power curve, and power increases with motor's speed to some point. By adding a reduction gear, we change a ratio between car's speed and its motor speed. The motor now, as we say, works faster (which literally means developing more power) at any speed range of the car, so it accelerates faster.

@@ricardomilos1784 easily. Power is acceleration x speed with a given mass. With the same power output, the slower the speed the better acceleration and vice versa. You trade between acceleration and speed with a gearbox. Torque is not related with performance because it can exist without displacement, and when displacement starts to occur it is described with power.

Maybe these questions will help you out to understand the topic and stop spreading misinformation? 1. If you feel torque then put a larger wheel on the axis and try to stop it. Why it is easier now despite the same torque? 2. If you need lots of torque to get something moving, why a man can tow a cargo plane, or a locomotive with dozens of carts? Check some videos on YT. 3. If you can move a light load really fast or a heavy load slower and put out the same power in both cases, then why two vehicles can have the same engine horsepower but have completely different functions? On top of that, 5 seconds earlier you showed yourself how gearing works. 4. Uncomfortable info for you here: if an electric car outperforms a gasoline of the similar specs because it reaches its peak torque faster, why the truck's specs engine is not installed into a race car? Not only it has a double amount of torque but it also reaches it faster. 5. If you need torque to move, then what is force/thrust? 6. If horsepower is torque x speed then what is power? 7. If horsepower is how fast you can move that load, then why you need torque for acceleration? 8. If horsepower is important, why there is no a single word about how exactly it's important in the video?
@IgorArkin
@IgorArkin Год назад
@@WissamSeif @Wissam Seif bad answers, looks like I have to sort it out by myself. 1. You can't feel torque, it is physically non-existent. 2. Or you don't "need lots of torque to get something moving". Or both. 3. You explained power as force times speed. And how gearing changes the balance between them. This means gearbox doesn't need any specific amount of input torque for a vehicle to perform any kind of job. 4. So when it is about electric vs ICE of the same power, electric wins because its torque is reached faster, and when it comes to diesel and gasoline, diesel does not dominate because "it's not just about torque and horsepower". "ICE doesn't hit its peak torque until it's near its max rpm". Ever seen a torque graph of ICE? 5. True that a car needs to overcome some extra static friction from a stand still start. Now get back to your "power is light load faster or higher load slower". 2+2= you need more power if you want to overcome more at/from the same speed. 6. Horsepower is a measurement of power. You mess already at the stage of the basics. 7. Explained in number 5 8. You didn't explain it well enough to yourself before the video was even made.
