This hack I came up with to aid in using a tortilla press. This could even be used with a rolling pin. Amazon link to cheap cutting board. A about a buck a piece amzn.to/2WtEMMN This will be my next press amzn.to/2Ynndje
@@ronaldriley5075 You do know the difference between the 2 don't you. Jusr don't add a levitating agent and use less dough to make tortillas. What is so hard to figure out. The press works the exact same way. It is not rocket science..
@@JackPaynesFoodPains I watched the other video you made and you purposely made a thin version to show people how. I'd say your hack is awesome! I'm doing the same. I've been rolling my tortillas which is way too much effort and really tough to get round.
I think because this could have been a 2-minute video instead of 9 mins. Most of the time he spent explaining things that are common sense. Dough too thick on one side? Rotate it and press again. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out.
Yes , a good tip , thank you . Two issues : a) why could you not just fully demonstrate with an actual dough ball b) would you not be better to cut your two discs into a ''lollipop'' , ie with a small handle the better to , er , handle them . Anyway , thank you .
I think I'll try a silicone baking mat instead of the cutting board, then i can heat the press and/or put the tortilla in the hot pan without worrying about melted plastic... thanks for the tip
These presses were designed for corn tortillas. I use one to get the general shape, then I finish the tortilla with a rolling pin. Saves a lot of time.
They both have pros and cons. The press is way faster. But it is limited on the size. So if you buy a press make sure you get one big enough. A freind of mine says he bought an electric tortilla maker. Its a heated press he says it works like a champ. I am gonna order one them and check it out. Thanks for watching..
Just picked up one of these presses at the Thrift Store for $4.99 still in the box. Thanks for the tips. Gotta look for those thin cutting boards. I know I seen them somewhere. Want to press out some Keto Indian Parathas.
Your comment really startled me haha because it was an echo of what I would have wrote. Just today I pick one up new in the box at the thrift store, a Victoria press, for $4.99....
The real hack is to just press and cook immediately on the cast iron press. Why buy something just to flatten it? It is cast iron so you can cook directly on it without having to worry about transferring it.
Wax paper is good too. With the uneveness we hand flip to even out the dough. I'm Native American from Arizona & this is how we make tortillas: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-r8tnpzq5NEg.html Probably more advanced method than the tortilla press, but try to even your dough by hand like the guy in the video. I still have a hard time doing it. 😄
I tried parchment paper, a step up from wax paper, for me it was a massive waste of time, corn 'dough' stuck and came apart in shards and chunks. Cut up zip lock bags (lots of vids on that method), work incredibly well. What this guy has done is a great Idea as well, I will have to give it a try.
You inspired me to maybe use some Mylar... Mylar can be completely clear, but it’s not as thick as the cutting board sheet...however, I’m not sure if Mylar is “Food safe”. I was also thinking to maybe try out some stencil plastic... 🤔
there is a gal on a video whose husband added a metal plate below her cast iron press with bailing wire and added a long heat free handle to lift upper plate once pressed. She then placed press on her gas burner on low heat flame and puts tortilla dough ball inside as you normally would. , presses and lifts tortilla out with spachula and continues to cook on a comal or grill. It works! The heat helps spread out the dough. She got a beautiful 8 plus inch FLOUR tortilla but it looks more like a 10 inch. I am in the process of creating the same with my 10 inch cast iron press. I have been making flour and corn tortillas since I was 11. Yes, latin family, oldest daughter. This works. When you are making flour tortillas you want a nice thin roll out. Thanks for the video.
That sounds 👍. The heat with helping spread the dough is correct. I owned a pizza shop and used a dough spreader called dough pro. I still have it. It is in my garage. The wife won't let me bring it in the house. It is rather bulky. Thanks for watching..😳
Another person asked this, I posted a subsequent video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--RHLVeh3Dpw.html You can skip to 2:50 to see how works. You would have to turn or re angle if using rolling pin as well Also a press is normally faster than a rolling pin. Especially when you consider clean up time as well.
See the link in the description. I put that video together quick because a Viewer in Sweden was using the wrong discs(too thick). Had to show him what to use.
@@JackPaynesFoodPains Appreciate the video, but when people review many vids each day, it sucks when someone drags it out. Constructive criticism, sincerely. Good idea, just didn't need to spend 8+ minutes to get it. And after all that, no actual demo? Just saying, you can do better.
@@donttakenythinfrgrnted5211 a little rough on the guy but you are not wrong. Jack Paynes, if you want people to follow your vids, you should listen to this guy, even if he's a bit abrupt. I'm sure he likes your vid in some way or he wouldn't have stayed 8 minutes. But like him, I get bogged down between RU-vid commercials and unedited videos and I'd like to see more in less time too. Thanks buddy!
@@donttakenythinfrgrnted5211 That video was done in a rush. A youtuber in Sweden was having issues. I tried to explain it via text but he was useing the type of plastic cutting board. Normally I will spend upto 3hrs editing a video. But if I Recall I only spent like a1 /2 hr on this one.
@@jacklaw9867 Trust me I get it. One thing is you should not see any commercials on my videos. I am not monetized and won't be. Because I don't like commercials either.
Apparently you really don't know how to use a tortilla press have one had for 40 years never had a problem you don't have to turn the tortilla do so many times I get a ziploc bag I cut it 1 of the bottom 1 of the top press down turn it once and that's it you are making it so difficult you just don't know how to use it
Zip lock is too flimsy and thin. You go ahead and use an antiquated method...Plus 40 years you have of making tortillas but not 1 single how to video??
Ziploc bags work great do not use surround wrap that's is too thin you cut up the ziploc bag to get two pieces but one on the bottom but your masse then you put the other one on top and press down simple as that My mother law in Mexico that's the way she used to do it that's the way all the women do it I lived there for 30 years and that's the way I did it never had any problems
Man your doing it all wrong, it will take you 1/4 the time and better results ... just watch the following short video!! HACK tortilla by ... Glen And Friends Cooking. i grew up eating tortillas, my abuela and madre made these daily... you are making it too complicated... you need for them to rest , and put the press on the stove... its cast iron for a reason.
Do a little reading and you will find it being used with dough. But here I will help you in case you don't know how... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--RHLVeh3Dpw.html
