Richard Thompson tends to attract very passionate followers, so I'm not surprised that any cover would represent heresy. But I think this is quite lovely, and thankfully brings something new to the song.
I come to you all from the future, the year 2020 with a piece of advisory wisdom: don't argue with Baby Boomers on RU-vid who stopped listening to new music in 1982, not worth it. Especially about Will Oldham covers of classic trax. They are either unable or simply unwilling to understand the subtle weirdness of his melodic choices and voice. Look to the comment section of his cover of The Kiss by Judee Sill for further proof. Also, if you have the option, just hibernate through 2020.
Don't care much for the chord voicings or the vocal harmonies, but it's generally better to have someone take a song elsewhere than to slavishly re-create something that was already unique and great. Not my earworm but worth the swing, and shows a bit of taste just to know the original exists.

One of the most enduring albums out there! I've see Tortoise Live a few times in Chicago in the ninties and I've seen the gifted songwriter, Billy "Ponce"' Billy. It's just one of those songs where the original is... well... you know!
Oh my goodness, what a disaster as far as a cover goes. I feel bad for the great Richard and Linda Thompson's original 'electric' version which I consider to be one of the finest modern music tracks of all time. This nonsense cover should not have been made as it pales into insignificance in comparison with the original. Perhaps they should stick to their own (original) stuff?
you're insane. it's a very very very good COVER of a great song. i wouldn't have even heard of the original if it wasn't for this version, so at least it's got that going for it, besides the fact that it is skillfully COVERED by some of the best musicians around today. lay off, okay? lets see you do anything remotely as good as this and then you can maybe talk shit. stop being such a negative nancy
