I am currently watching the ice dance in 2022, but nothing, nothing, nothing has ever come close to the drama of this performance for me. The way he used her as his cloak was simply inspired. Haven’t seen it for years. Still gives me a tingle.

Forget Bolero. Even by today's scoring standards this routine is the best you will see by anybody, anywhere, EVER.

Honestly I stopped watching Ice dance after the new system came. Nowadays the technical level are very high compared to the 6.0 system but the artistry, innovation and creativity has gone out the window. All we now see is similar looking programs with twizzles and elements to gain more points. Torvill and Dean were an iconic and innovative Ice dance team in Ice dance history and this performance shows you what Ice dancing is.

I remember being transfixed watching this in 1984 - as were my 3 million fellow Kiwis. Chris the arrogant toreador, and Jayne his cape which he tossed, turned, and dragged behind him as he taunted an imaginary bull. PERFECTION! We will never see their like again.

Christopher Dean was so outstandingly brilliant in this routine. I love all their performances, but this one beats Bolero for me .. his commanding performance is excellent. Watched their latest interview last week and he’s still a strikingly handsome man … and Jane Torvill, well, she’s just beautiful .. what a simply perfect pair they were … and are. There will never be another pair like them.

It never gets old... Those climactic three steps by Chris Dean were the sexiest ever taken in ice dancing!

The perfect footwork, the costumes and the way that they remained "in character"even after the music stopped. She remained on the ice, the discarded cloak, until he lifted her up and then stood behind him with her hand on his shoulder him holding it, holding his cloak in position over his shoulder. Breathtaking performance! ❤

The best ice dancers ever. No one skates as close as they did. Its not really ballroom dancing on ice anymore, just skating to music.

This is THE dance. Clever - when you watch just Chris, Jane, as his cape, reacts to his every twist and turn of it, like the fabric would. It is ingenious. And his performance as the bull fighter is magnificent. I cannot understand why it is not this one that everyone remembers. The Bolero was good - but this was outstanding for the choreography and the execution.

35 years on the technical difficulty in this programme is still absolutely amazing. If either of them were out by a nanosecond they would literally take each other out. No one else has ever done anything as ground breaking as these two in 1984

I've never forgotten seeing this the first time, all those years ago, and getting chills down my spine. There was never anything like this couple before them, and never anything since.

I remember being amazed by this performance. Overshadowed by the Bolero, I still think this is an outstanding performance.

That is the single best interpretation of the Paso Doble where the man is the matador and the woman is the cape that has ever been done, imo.

I love how we were not bombarded with commentary. These two will always be the best of the best.

Really miss their artistic ability and also their innovation. You just don't see this anymore. Great loss.

One of the marks of the "greats" is that if they did the same routine today, it would still wow the crowd. Gorgeous!

When a former world champion (referred to as one of the commentators) stands and applauds, smiling in admiration after you have left the ice, I guess you might be classed as pretty good at what you do. This couple were the best of their generation, ground breaking to the point that the judges had to change the rules because they had mastered them. Nobody of their time could have skated as they did and nobody has done for skating what they did. Why they are not sir and dame is a disgrace, especially when you look at some of the dregs of our species that have been given such recognition simply because of who they know.

Watched this in awe in '84; now 40 yrs later, it's still jaw-dropping. The precision, the drama, the attitude, the music and costumes - T&D continue to be the G.O.A.T.s.

They did this routine , then Bolero the next night. Just mind blowing.

This performance was actually at Worlds ‘84 in Ottawa. I live in Ottawa, and for my 11th birthday gift, my parents got us tickets to see the free dance final, so I was as there when they scored a record 13 perfect 6’s for Bolero. I was a competitive skater and witnessing this inspired me to focus more on my ice dance sessions instead of my free skate sessions. Earlier in the week, my dad took me to the Civic Centre to sit in on the ice dance compulsory practice session, where I got to sit in a tiny rink with only about 30 other people, and watch Jayne and Chris practice Paso Doble. I think that was even more special than being in the audience for the Bolero performance because I could stand right up at the glass and they would pass by me literally inches away! I was in awe.

Now this is what I call ice skating. Ice skating of nowadays can't even compare! What class & beautiful music!

As a former International figure skater, myself, let me tell you… They are beautiful to watch and the best that has ever been… by a mile!

This was actually my favorite from that season. When Christopher (the matador) strides, dragging his cape (Jayne), it gave me chills - still does. ⛸💖

40 years ago next year and it still takes my breath. Superb choreography.

They changed the face of ice dance. And this program was one of their very best out of all the outstanding programs they produced.

I loved this more than Bolero as a kid. Jane as the cape was inspired. Look at Chris give everything as the matador. Made me well up watching it again. Incredible even now.

Even after all these years there's no one who comes close to equalling Jane and Christopher. Mesmerising and still love watching this and Bolero, which are my two favourite ice dances.

There will never,NEVER be anyone ever to better Torvill and Dean. They just melt seamlessly into one another. All their dances were mesmerising especially this one. Christopher Dean was the best matador. We'll never see anyone better ❤❤❤xxx

Chris was always the most elegant dancer on ice. It’s impossible to take your eyes from his beautiful movements.

Having Jayne play the role of the cape focuses the dancing by Chris. It shows What a proficient dancer Chris is and I think it’s really a good idea for Chris to show off Chris’s skill.

This wasn't even their magnum opus but they absolutely nailed it down shut! Apart from the fact that Torville and Dean were perfect in this and the bolero, their coach Betty Calloway, was the brains behind it all.....when perfect meets perfect.

I remember being at ice level that evening in Ottawa for this performance and the air in the venue was "electric" as T&D took to the ice for their original dance. And all these years later their Paso Doble remains both a classic and unbeatable even by today's standards.....

I believe that Chris Dean is an absolutely unique and virtuous ice-skate dancer. He is one of the kind.

Chris and Jayne are by far the best ice dancers ever. This OSP, the Paso Doble, was just amazingly awesome ~ no other couple even came close to their talent and graceful performance.

This is my favourite set pattern dance..absolutely brilliant as always.. the choreography is amazing and when he strides ahead dragging Jayne as the cape is just so good..it is at one with the music. The greater pair of ice dancers ever..greatest of all time.

I used to think ravels bolero was their best but now this is THE best dance routine on ice ever . It was flawless and smooth and esp Chris gave that captured the Spanish theme with his movements.

Watched the original performance, Still watching in 2020. Have to say Jayne had a great pair of legs for skating. Technically brilliant for their time, they set the standard for others to follow. The way she wrapped her arms around Chris at the finish, she was his cape Right until they stepped off the ice to get the scores. Magnificent.

Mind boggling that they did that floorlessly ON ICE, I couldn't even do that on normal ground 😮❤

Strictly keep trying, but Torvill & Dean's Paso Doble is the benchmark. Still love it

With self isolation due to COVID19 , Chris & Jayne again gave me this calmness and pure happiness in watching the best skaters ever. God Bless you Jayne and Christopher

Perfection on ice. I almost cried when I first watched this in 1984, as I was so moved by their performance . This, and Bolero are so moving they give you hope for mankind that two people can come together and create such beauty together

This is T& D (and ice dancing) at its BEST. So many elements contributed to the perfection of this performance - (1) their skill; (2) the choreography (3) the costumes (4) the dramatic music and THEIR dramatic interpretation (Jane as cape). I saw it on TV in '84 and I watch it every few years - I can't imagine what could eclipse this - it is JOY PERSONIFIED!

When Dean strides out to the music trailing his 'cape' behind is magnificent. Apparently their practice costumes were similar so they got the feel of Torvil being a cape. Then, even at the end of the dance, Torvil is draped over Dean's shoulders and they leave the ice.

For me, the greatest ever three and a half minutes in ice dancing history. I saw it live on TV. I enjoyed the paso doble even more than their performance of Bolero.

The 80’s was the greatest decade ever - I got to watch Torville and Dean get perfect 6’s, sing with Queen at Wembley, run in Race Against Time, see Top Gun and Dirty Dancing in the cinema and see Neighbours first episode!! 😂

Wonderful gives me chills, after all these years. Chris captured the mood of Paso exquisite shaping.

I remember this routine, watching it on TV. Typically in any pair event, it's the business of the male partner to sort of "present" the woman, and here it was the other way around -- he the toreador, and she the cape. Very clever, beautiful, interesting routine and still great to watch even now.

Two of the most memorable skaters in the history of figure skating: elegant, artistic and humble.

I saw them live many years after they achieved all the medals and it was one of those lump in the throat moments as they have extraordinary magic - had to stop myself from crying watching them. As others have said, no one has ever come close to their synchronicity and artistry - and their choreography was of a different world. No one has ever come close to them since. This was a remarkable dance and set the bar that frankly has never been reached.

I think tis was even more remarkable than Bolero. Danced to conform to the rules of the round and yet transcending them. And then the choice of Rimsky's Capriccio Espagnole, absolute athletic and artistic genius!

I remember it all so well. Absolutely brilliant then and even today. There will.never be anyone like them

I think this should be as well known as Bolero! I cannot forget that a couple of years ago, on Dancing on Ice, Oti didn't seem to know of this routine!! Even after all this years, it's fantastic!!

I remember seeing this. Brilliant performance. Dean kept Torvill as his cloak even when the competing had finished and they were skating off the ice. Such a strong performance. When they were practicing for the competition, they outfits were similar to the competing outfits so that they could get the feel of Torvill being the cloak.

Jayne totally became the cape... This amazing pair have kept me riveted since the early eighties and I can't watch these videos without welling up, they are one of the things that make me proud to be British... This is why I prefer dance to figure, a story can be told using expressions and feelings... Absolutely breathtaking still, in their sixties!! Bravo!

A key was that Dean was never just a foil for Jane, he designed dances we he had to show he could dance in his own right - and this number really called for it!

I remember watching this back in 1984, thinking it was perfection then, it still is….. The concept of her being the cape right to very end when he spun her onto the ice and then picked her up and she draped herself around him. Brilliant. May I say, just as an observation, and I’m female, that as well as their unparalleled skating prowess, Jayne possesses an incredible pair of well proportioned legs.

This is their best routine, not Bolero. Just brilliant!!
