After Rishi Sunak went head-to-head with Keir Starmer in the first debate of the General Election campaign, Ben Kentish speaks to Conservative Veterans Minister, Johnny Mercer, and presses him on the Tories' claim that Labour will 'increase taxes'.
It comes as Sunak repeatedly accused Starmer of planning to raise taxes if he becomes Prime Minister.
Sunak levelled a claim at the Labour Leader that he would increase taxes for the average household by £2,000 - with Starmer rubbishing these accusations as "garbage" and based on faulty calculations. Labour Shadow Cabinet member Jonathan Ashworth later said the claim was "absolute nonsense".

At best it's because Sky just wants conflict for clicks and at worst it's because the Tories are going to remove the TV license and thus all restrictions on broadcast media to create a US style propaganda system all run on their behalf by their donors. It's not enough for them to not enforce existing laws and seize control of the BBC and remove it's independence, as they have done, they must remove all journalistic controls and standards to replace the waning influence of the print propaganda industry. The Tories even tried to make the editor of the Mail the head of Ofcom last year.

Sunak was appalling - he butted in, interrupted, and shouted down Starmer AND the moderator - who completely failed to keep order, and allowed Sunak to behave in this rude manner, but did not accord Starmer equal status. He was bullying and domineering - exactly as he was 2 years ago, when he debated Liz Truss for the 'honour' of becoming an unelected Tory Prime Minister. And I used to be a life long Tory voter.

In simple terms, the Tories looked at Labour's £65 billion plans, ignored how it's been fully costed & decided to divide the £ between families. The non existent £2,000 plucked out the air is over 4 years. A blatant lie. By the same measure, every person in the UK has coughed up £8 so far to the Rwanda scheme, £4 for the yacht, and £560 for useless test and trace. If I added up all the other £ the Tories have wasted so far, we're talking £1000s per person. Labour need to nip this '£2K per family' lie in the bud.

really - i can refute GB energy figures now - the point is that they are both right and both wrong depending on the figures you use and show. Labour use 3rd party "reports" looks like the Cons use in house. Labour suggest GB energy will save £300 per household bills by 2030 they used a company called Ember to produce this. Ember relied on some figures that are totally incorrect. indeed the ONS figures for q3/24 would account for 2/3rds of this saving straight away. Ember then proceeded to double the efficiencies of renewables and rely on the cost being half of current. so are their figures right or wrong? i would say based on current conditions they are BS however thing may change

Since 2019 the Tories have "wasted" 130 billion Pounds. They did it through transferring money through contracts to cronies at massively inflated rates. Such as scrapping a fully functioning track and trace system that cost 2 million pounds for no system costing 37 billion pounds and costing thousands of lives in the process, extending and deepening lockdowns etc.

Starmer was shut down by the moderator as the moderator allowed Sunak to eat into Starmer 45 seconds with lies leaving Starmer exasperated same for many of the public well noticed make no mistake about that. Mercer either didn't watch the head to head debate, wasn't paying attention or is lying. Starmer did deny the £2000 tax claim from Sunak but didn't get proper chance to refute it in a calm measured manner due to time constraints. The host of the debate did appear to give Sunak a little more opportunity to speak which allowed him to spread misinformation.

In 2010 debt was 800 billion its now 2.63 trillion, BOE rates are 5.25% and gilts have been index linked to RPI, debt repayment last year was 130 billion with government annual borrowing at 120 billion. Yet by magic Sunak spent 20 billion on a tax cut 72 billion on fuel support instead of instigating a windfall tax

Johnny Mercer, the sort of person who will stand watching the rain and tell people in his oh so convincing voice that the sun is shining on this beautiful, cloudless day. Shame on anyone who listens to these arrogant charlatans. To suggest we mustn't quextion Rishi Sunak's integrity is tbe height of irony, he clearly has none at all. Just another power-hungry lying conman. Oh, and Starmer is no better either. We need something much, much better, but I'm not optimistic we are going to get anyone who can save us.

I like the start where he lists off all the problems Sunak is dealing with, which literally aside the war in Ukraine are all either created or made worse by the Tories, like apparently we should feel sorry for the guy dealing with all these issues HIS PARTY caused and that he was chancellor for a lot of the time.
