TOSHIBA Canvio Basic 2TB clicking problem

Had this clicking sound periodically when using external drive. It's not easy to activate guarantee when it's not a permanent problem. Now when the guarantee period ended you can see what is happening inside. Problem solved by purchasing another brand and avoiding Toshiba drives.

I am glad you posted this. Great demo. Do you remember how old was your drive when it started failing? I have an external 2TB Toshiba Canvio drive (dwc120) from 2013 making that same noise, so it did a pretty good job for beating the mean time between failure estimates. I've had problems with Seagate, Toshiba and Western Digital. I remember being surprised by Seagate failures. I am no longer surprised when I have issues with any manufacturer. That said, I am back on Seagate's external drive with USB HUBs for slow long term storage.

It was just at the end of the guarantee period when it starts to fail like this. Drive was used as a backup drive occasionally. It did not have many work-hours. At first this sound was produced sometimes at the drive-start, then worked fine for a while until next start. Finally every drive-start was like this. Then I bought a few WD Elements for backups. Rarely used now. These days, it's cloud storage and SSD time with occasional mechanical drive backup just in case.

So you're just too young/inexperienced to know that this is how pretty much all HDDs fail, eventually; some fail even more abruptly, like some older Seagate HDDs, even when they had bought Quantum Brand through Maxtor acquisition, that should make them reliable. Toshiba are great HDDs, I have 1 2TB and a 3TB, 2 3TB new ones, as reserve; My 2TB has like 6 years, still OK, and recently my 1TB Hitachi HDD started to fail after 9 years. I have them on sponger, outside the case, no speakers on the table, no vibration at all, and soon to get Soft Silicon Pads, to cushion vibrations even more, well cooled with a dedicated fan. I think is not the brand, but how the user treats them; I'm 51 and have used lots of brands over time. When the clicks start, make a back up, is still safe and recue all the info, I did it with my Hitachi, 500+ GB, still using it tho; it help put them sideways for a while, or upside down horizontally

I had the same problem but someone advice me to backup the data or clone the drive. Then I made the clone with stellar data recovery professional. After that, I took it to the service center.

I have the same exact problem. Bought new Toshiba Canvio, did platters swap, board swap and the clicking noise still happening. :(

Omg... I have the same issue today, all my data in there as it was supposed to be my hard disk backup. Any news about it? I can't believe.

You can try plugging off-on the drive multiple times. It might start working normally without any clicking noise. Then you move all the data of that drive and scrap it. I managed to get it going with many restarts (not fun). But don't rely on that procedure. It might be gone for good.

@@SvenKelemen I tried many times and unfortunately, it doesn't work, today, I will check the PCB, clean the contact and try again. The next step that I am thinking is to buy another one and transfer the disk plates, but, I will pay for somebody do this job for me.... What do you think?

@@thiagovillasboasdesalvo243 there are companies that can help you retrieve the data. It might cost a bit more and the risk is on you, still if the data is valuable, I guess that's your best option. Good luck!

I have the same problem too with a 3 t. Any solutions for the problem?

If you need data retrieval there are companies specialized for it. They exchange parts with the working disk. With my issue disk would sometimes start to work after hours of "warming up" like in this video and many computer restarts. Otherwise new disk, not the same model, not to make the same mistake.

@@SvenKelemen unfortunately I wasted already 430 pounds. A company tried to recovery the data but with no result. I'm not sure how good they are but I don't believe is completely dead.

No, guarantee period was just over. This problem was recurring. After many restarts disk would work normally for a while.
