Okubo Hikozaemon (Toshiro Mifune), who used to be known as the "opinionated man of the land," has retired and lives with his servant Kiuchi (Shunji Fujimura), both have now become absent-minded and are even said to be in a trance by the young Hatamoto (feudal lord). One day, a young girl named Chizuru (Misako Tanaka) appears and forcefully begins a live-in apprenticeship, claiming that her mother, Omatsu, who had been serving at Hikozaemon's mansion for 18 years, had died and left a will saying, "After the 49th day has passed, you should go and take care of Master Okubo in my place." At the time, Hidetada, the feudal lord, was in critical condition, and the bannermen were irate that an outside daimyo might rebel.
