I also remember an early mission, Veruna vs Creon i think. What broke me on that one was the darn laser guns, the range on those is SICK. But once I memorized where those were they were easy to avoid. I don't know of any unit naming, but you could always name the first guy to attain gold (veterancy) and try to keep him alive.

They were powerful indeed, but I never really felt they were overly powerful, most of the difficulty (I think) can be attributed to the enemy having a finished base compared to you and having more sacred sites (mana) than you, missions where you play as creon were no easier than other missions.
