Reviewing the most asked about Total Gym / sliding bench trainer, the Total Gym GTS (very similar to the Encompass). I finally was able to get one locally and excited to share with you what is most likely the best sliding bench trainer you can buy. Granted this is a "commercial" level model found in gyms and rehabilitation facilities. With that said, it's not without it's limitations (aside from the high price tag). I'll you an honest review of the pros and cons along with how it compares with lower level models.

Congrats, Mike on picking one up at a discount! A few things I would add, in the instructions for the shoulder press bar (curved bar), it says not to use it as a pull-up bar because it can cause damage to the Total Gym. They recently changed the total weight rating on the GTS & Encompass - it used to be 650, but they lowered it to 500. Not sure why. Also, I think the user weight capacity of 350 is lower due to the adjustable glide board. When the glide board is in the raised position, the supports are thinner metal, so it may not be able to support as much weight in the raised position. Just my theory but makes sense in my head.

The day I got my GTS and got on the board I was hooked. Had mine 4 years now and I use it every single day! Something it took me a while to figure out with the movable pulley anchors (the squishy things), there are little nubs on the back of the lat bars, and those anchors go over them. Gives you multiple positions but also prevents them from sliding around, which they will do if you just put them anywhere.
@hybridresistance
@hybridresistance Год назад
Thank you for sharing all of this I have to definitely look into those little nubs you’re talking about.

The web page for the GTS says that it has a max load of 650 lbs, so you can probably stress test it even further, if you're willing to risk it. Long time fan of the channel, so I wanted to thank you for the consistent, high quality content.

Just watched this at 7pm Detroit time, and since I have years of experience with the Total Gym, both using, and selling them, from back in the late 70's to the present, I will try to keep this comment short. I am happy you now actually have one of these. My Mother use to tell me as a child, that you really don't know anything, about anything, until you are "in it", or in this case, you actually have one to use, and can see the benefits. I know some people have had problems with the equipment, but in my years of experience, it often boils down to how you as an individual take care of your equipment. And yes, sometimes, there are manufacturers defects, and my experience with Total Gym as a company, originally known as "EFI Sportsmedicine", is they have great customer service, standing behind the products. Now, at one point the retail store models were made by Fitness Quest under license from EFI, but I believe that is no longer the case because of quality issues. Each Total Gym has a weight rating, pertaining to the weight of the person on the unit, and obviously the commercial models, used in fitness facilities and rehab facilities, are designed to handle people who may be overweight, and there are going to be tons of people using it. Again, any version of the "TG" can be beneficial, and as I said in my last comment, there IS a reason why there are so many different models/price points, so everyone can have access to the benefits of the Total Gym, without worrying about costs. As a professional certified trainer, the GTS works for me, and is part of the costs for running a business, not needed for regular home use, which I have an XLS in my home.

Great comment! Thank you for sharing all of that with your experience.

Thank you very much for your insight, Roy! Coming from Germany, having done PT on a classic GTS years ago and then exercised more than three years in my PT‘s clinic I adored the „Efi sports machines“ he used in his clinic. At that time I had no clue that was a „Total Gym“. When I realized that years later, that was my starting point to find a consumer model over here. First a 1800club, barely used and imported by an American living here. I then later upgraded to a FIT, and imported it from the U.S. as our local distributor, who I then found here, had told me I could buy an Encompass from them for more than 5.000 €. For sure an outstanding piece of equipment, but out of my price range and to bulky for my home. It‘s really sad we don‘t have the same variety of models over here, for different needs and money available, but I think that has to do with the fact Total Gym is not as well known as in the U.S., and the local distributors are independent re-sellers, having to pay for licences and probably shipping as well. And as far as I know, every sport equipment sold in Europe, does need a CE certification to make sure it is safe, what probably is expensive to get and has to be paid by the seller. So normally you only find the XLS and sometime the achiever sold by european local distributors. As you sold TGs, may I ask you, about your opinion of the 14000 model or the „Sport“? Very rarely I saw some of them on our secondary market but too far away just to test them and am quite curious about them compared to a FIT.

@@hybridresistance I should probably clarify what I meant. Before I lost my foot I was pretty active. But with the limited mobility of my prosthetic I cant do a squat, I have compromised balance and movement as your ankle provides most of your "balance" - quick muscle adjustments. So, being able lay down and be able to do a modify squat and being able sit and lay down on a board to do other exercises is a game changer. The total gym is great for people that have balance and mobility issues and the GTS is much beefier and stable then the home versions.

Great review. Probably the best I've seen on this particular model. I'll admit I was a bit envious when I saw that you got one. How far you've come from the Weirder Ultimate, Lol! Watching the review and everything it has and can do I also see that this machine would be total overkill and overwhelming for me (not that I ever considered it). I'm more than happy with the TG Fit. For someone like you I can see it being totally worth it. Hope you still continue to focus on the average models but hope you enjoy this one. Would like to see a follow up assessment sharing your thoughts after 6 months.

Thanks again andrew. I for sure will be doing follow ups and updates on this model the more I discover and mess with it. But definitely the fit model is the all-around solid machine. The only minor drive that I’ve been having recently is noticing the wheel/cable build and how some of the attachments are performing over time.

Excellent info, thanks! I was awarded my NASM CPT certificate in 2021. I had a Total Gym about 10 years ago in NY and CA, a better-quality medium-level machine than the cheapest one. I loved it but sold it due to space and apt. living in CA. This commercial-grade machine looks great, and well built, especially with the added attachments, extra height, resistance with weight capacity, and the ability to more thoroughly train legs than the cheaper models. If you're serious about being fit, staying healthy, and having the $4k it's totally worth it. Thanks again.

Congratulations Mike on your new sliding bench trainer. I’m excited to see what creative exercises that you discover with the GTS. I also worried when i brought it that it was financially excessive for me and definitely it was way more than i could reasonably afford at the time. What i would say though Mike is that people spend a fortune on cars, expensive coffees, etc… this piece of exercise equipment will last a lifetime and the 600lbs of weight that you can load it up with is going to replace multiple commercial grade pieces of exercise equipment. I wouldn’t feel guilty at all. You work hard, you put out great content and it’s an investment in your health.

Awesome job getting your hands on one of these. I think you hit the nail on the head with your review. As with any item, there tends to be a "sweet spot" on price vs. features/quality. At 2X to 3X the cost of the Fit, it just seems to be way outside of that spot. However, if you are passionate about these sliding bench trainers and either (1) have the money to spend or (2) can find a great deal on a used one, it can definitely be worth it to pick one up. I see how the adjustable arms and glide board could be useful if you don't like certain exercises due to the angle of the resistance. I'd love it if the non-commercial models had something like that.

Excited to finally see a review on the high-end total gym - congrats on the purchase! I would be happy to see it featured a little more, if only to get one of those “after ‘x’ amount of time” videos that are supposed to show it impressions change with further use. I am definitely interested in the adjustable height clamps for pressing. I still have a hard time engaging my muscles on chest presses, unless I am really focused in and holding just the right angle. I feel like if my concentration breaks for a second, I can’t recover it and the rest of the set all shoulders. My hope it that the higher pulley position, coupled with the more horizontal bench angle, will make the chest press a little easier to engage. Have you found that to be the case? Additionally, sturdier attachments would be a welcome change (why they won’t make the base ones a little better, I can’t understand…) and that bar to help you keep from sliding off the bench during leg presses seems like a win! I’m a ways off from committing to a purchase like this; but, if it performs well for you and holds up, maybe it will be a purchase for me next spring!
@hybridresistance
@hybridresistance Год назад
Thank you for the comments. I'm still fairly new with the machine, but yes one of the perks is that you can adjust that cable tension line of action. With regards to chest I'm not noticing anything huge yet, but I also had no problem on the base model. I'd still even say if the chest is hard to hit with a TG, have you tried supplementing with any other fitness related device? Let me know if you'd like to see future videos with this in the future.
@xdmc005
@xdmc005 Год назад
Thanks. I think that first I’ll go back and review some of your previous videos with chest exercises to see if I can pick-up on anything I missed. I’m hesitant to do too much with supplemental devices, because time and space are a premium for me, which is why I love my TG Fit. I just roll it out from behind my desk, open it up, exercise and then put it away. I saw the x3 videos and my interest was piqued for sure, but $500 just to do chest presses standing up with a band seems a bit much. I’ve been watching the isometric stuff you’ve put out there recently, but I’m not quite sold on those just yet… Anyway, my preference would just be to continue practicing on the TG, messing with the tower height / where I’m sitting on the glide board / torso angle, etc. Sometimes I feel it, other times it bothers my shoulders, so I just stop and reset when that happens.

Had a Bayou Fitness Total Trainer for 4 years, like you figured out all kinds of DIY ways to add to it, but in the end, even with 220 pounds on the board and it jacked up on a stand to increase angle, it just wasn't enough to progress. Just get a power rack, a bar and dumbbells, you can do so much more and the biomechanics are much better. I got the trainer because I had a bad back and weightlifting worried me, but now I lift heavy and my back is better then the last 25 years.

Congratulations on your purchase. This will be one unit that will be able to withstand the abuse the Fit model was subjected to. I, for one will not be buying that but I’m glad to see that you now own the Cadillac version of the Total Gym. I did notice a con with the GTS and from what I observed is that you can’t add weights when using their pull up bar. But other than that the unit covers ALL the Boxes. When you get a chance please let us all know if the leg press option is similar to a commercial leg press machine.👍

Thank you Jose for the comment and the continued support. I can give you an update in the future, but as of now the leg press even on this machine is not typical "leg press machine" equivalent. Great video as usual, Mike. I've got a Fit and also recently picked up a GTS. I think your assessment is spot-on. The GTS is unquestionably better than the Fit but in more of those "luxury" aspects you mentioned. The Total Gym concept works well regardless of model. I picked up your Skeleton Program recently--it's a great tool and am noticing benefits from following it. Thanks for putting that together and at such an affordable price! Question on the GTS: I see you're securing rubber bands on the weight bar attachment. Are you using 32" long bands for it like you are on the Fit?

My wife and I have both the Encompass and a Total Gym Fit and use them both religiously. Bought both used on Facebook for a total combined price of $1250 in like new condition. There are not many Encompass models available for sale used. It was just a freak event that someone within 25 miles of our home listed a like new model for $1500 and took my $1000 offer for the unit. I like the fit and it certainly has a better price point. But the Encompass is awesome.
@garywinterscoachablemoment7029
I don't think I commented yet, but if so, please forgive me. I bought an older GTS off Marketplace recently for $300 (which included the strength package), to upgrade from a Total Gym Extreme. I had to upgrade to Hulk rollers, and I'm missing a couple of small bits, but it's one helluva machine! Big old beast! Mine is older than the one you got, so I've only got 8 levels of resistance, and no adjustable bench. Nonetheless, I can do almost anything with it. I was going to get the Fit Anniversary Edition from QVC when it goes on sale, but I don't think there's any need to do that now. Great review, Mike; you explained all the features, pros and cons very well.

Thanks! I’d love to see more of this machine. I’m curious how the adjustable pulleys will help taller people improve getting a more effective chest press, and other exercises, by changing the angles. Besides vertically it seems the pulleys can move horizontally as well? From the outside of the big oval handles to the very centre of the tower - is this correct? Being over 6’4 I can see how these adjustments could help focus on various muscle groups easier. I’m also curious about the adjustable bench. I’ve often thought it would be good if the bench could incline at the top of the machine. Look forward to seeing you use this machine again!
@hybridresistance
@hybridresistance Год назад
Thank you so much for the "super thanks", extremely appreciated. I will for sure will be featuring more of this machine and you can look forward to my next video comparing this to home model total gyms. Yes, you can move the pulleys horizontally as well, basically all around "big oval handles" and center tower. This greatly increases the customization, but it's hard for me to obviously guarantee for you personally how much of this will suit your preference. I've had 6'4 individuals say the FIT model works fine (maybe with some chain extension), but this model would be the ideal best option for people of your size. I'd still say some extension in the cables may be necessary on some exercises. I'm also right with you on the "incline bench" as I've thought about that too. I will say, I'm using the adjustable bench way more than I thought I would be since this recording. Thank you again!

My TG doesn't have the weight bar attachment, to me just the fact that it has 22 levels of resistance is amazing, pair that with your mac blocks, and your set. I would be interested if you can do new exercises on it that we can't on the older models. I would love to see variations of the Nordic Curls on these new machines. As in, would it be more stable? Or could we do Nordic Curls with the flat bench setting and hook our feet in an attachment? Would love to see if its possible. Great video and enjoy your new TG

@@hybridresistance Mike, what also might be interesting for someone who does put a lot of weight on the commercial units - as a member of the TGA group, and as far as I remember, there was a member who had bought it and then really was disappointed that he could not do pull ups (with two hands) with a lot of weight on it, because you have to put on the weight on the top of the glide board that seemed to interfere with that excercise. I can‘t remember excactly what the problem was, nor that it ever will be a problem for me. But for someone, wanting to load a lot of weight on it and considering buying it new, that might be an interesting point to know. On the classic GTS you could load the weight plates also on the bottom of the glide board, but with this newer board that can be lifted up, that‘s not more possible. The „tip“ of the company, at that time was, to do single arm pull ups, and there even was a bet if someone was able to do so and so repetitions he would get a specific price. So I really am interested about your opinion concerning this matter.

@@KarinL. thank you for the question and I can see now what you guys are talking about. I actually did try that and called an audible as I realized I couldn’t do that either. I do think there are some workarounds most notably using resistance bands and a couple other possible solutions using straps. Personally for me it’s not a big deal I find doing pull ups with my iso bow at a high incline to be challenging enough. What I forgot to add in this video is that given the machine is so heavy, the baseline resistance on the glide does feel more substantial to the lower grade models. For whatever it’s worth, I’ve honestly not loaded up my weight bar on any of my total gym models in recent months. But this may be because I’ve been using my X3 alongside my sbt.

I actually bought one of these when they first came out, but I found the glide path too short for me. At the time, I had an ORIGINAL physical therapist's style, 9 feet long and no folding. I do regret taking it back, because it was a really outstanding piece of equipment. At the time I was living in San Diego, so I put it in my truck and returned it. Kinda wish I had it now...

Yes, I can do. I'm still experimenting a bit with it. The best method (again try at your own risk) is going from the bottom base under the glide board and clipping under on the carabiner clip. I use a lighter band because it can get hard to stretch it to fit. I actually show a clip of this in my latest video where I'm talking about the bands.

I’d say yes, mostly because you essentially can adjust it all sorts of directions to suit your preference. only downside of this is that there’s almost too many options. I’m sure the more I use it I will find the setting that works for particular exercises

@@hybridresistance Hi. Thank you for responding but what I was asking can you do pull ups on the GTS and at the same time have the extra free weights on the total gym to give you more resistance. I guess trying to get to the point of getting close to pulling close to your own body weight on the GTS by adding free weights since on the GTS you can have only up to 62% of your body weight. You can do something like that on the XLS and fit since the free weights go on the bottom. Thanks

Thank you Bobby and appreciate the comments. However I’m discovering that a lot of people have multiple pieces of commercial grade equipment in their home gyms

Actually probably not, the big problem you faced putting it into say a car or a van is how heavy and bulky it is. So you’d want to make sure it’s a open and flat surface to make it easier putting it in and taking it out.

1/ Weight traveling less than vertically divides resistance c1/2, (more or less, depending on the angle). 2/Resistance moving toward the end-point as the subject pulls toward that same point means the resistance traveled only 1/2 the distance as the full ROM, dividing it another 1/2. Thus a 100 lb female might be working with 25 lbs. I believe she'd be better off doing rows & presses with an empty barbell, & bodyweight squats.

Great video and review Mike! This machine was the "overdone" model created for EFI to go global and into gyms. It's a completely other experience... that's kind of a cancel out for me. Too many unnecessary step ways from what actually is needed for the sake of business growth. I think, if you found yourself a used 14000 model, even a 11000 DLX model you would have the one you would go-to most the time. Believe me. It's why they kept the 14000 and 26000 well after the GTS' came out in 2003. If I had an extra 14000 I'd send it to you because I'm so sure it's the model you're missing out on most. Thanks for making all the efforts getting this machine and sharing the great review. No one does these like you do.

I got a TG 1100 in 1999. This is the model later was renamed, with minor cosmetic changes, to the 11000 and finally 14000. (There was a later, cheaper TG that came out and assumed the 1100 name at a later point.) My 1100 was a great machine. I moved in 2021and we weren't sure we'd have room for it, so I sadly didn't keep it. I was hankering for a TG again, so I recently bought the TG Fit Ultimate last month when QVC had it for only $699.00 (cheaper than what I paid for the 1100 in 1999). It's a very nice piece of equipment, and more suitable for most homes, but, if I could, I'd trade it for my original TG 1100 (11000/14000). I did lust for the 24000/26000 model, but I definitely didn't have space (or funds) for it. However, whichever of these machines one has, it's one's own efforts that bring about the results. ALL the TG models are worthwhile to someone willing to work at their fitness regimen.

@@robertcook2680 Hi Robert, could you please tell me what you think the advantages a 14000 has compared to a FIT? I really would appreciate that - coming from Germany where barely any consumer models are sold 😩, I imported a FIT and am happy with it. But am very curious about the 14000, as sometimes, rarely, there does one appear on our secondary market, still for a lot of money as they really are rare (about 800 €). Normally too far away to be able to just try it and find out about it. I do know that no attachments are available for it any more, so I also would be interested what attachments in your eyes are necessary to have for it, if I found one.
@robertcook2680
@robertcook2680 Год назад
@@KarinL. Karin, I'd say the TG FIT provides the same experience and utility as the TG 14000, based on my experience with the FIT after one month. I just have a personal preference for the build of the 14000...it's a bit bigger, with a slightly wider and longer slide board, slightly wider width between the rails, and made of a heavier steel. While the FIT offers 12, 14, or 15 levels of height, (depending on which model one has), the top level of each is the same. The 14000 has only six height increments, but the top level is a little higher than the top level on the FIT. The slope of the top level of my FIT is 25.5%, while the slope of the top level on the 14000 is 30.0%. So, it's close. My preference is just based on that having been my first experience with Total Gym, and using it (on and off) for 20 years. If you can obtain a 14000 at a price that seems low enough for you to comfortably justify it, you might find it to your liking. However, I would not say the experience of using the 14000 is different enough from the FIT to warrant your spending any substantial amount of money for it. The FIT is a fine piece of equipment, and is not as bulky as the 14000. Have you seen any videos of it? Here is one of several videos of it available on RU-vid: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-l4ukz6ipPg8.html. Here's another: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KuDQ9YjGD1o.html. There are several of these you can find on RU-vid.
