Yours is probably the most conventional way of rigging a can pole, but I stopped doing it that way years ago. Modern fishing rods have several guides or eyelets along the length of the rod, and historically, many cane poles had at least two, with one being on the center section. Some also had a pair of deeply notched pegs down close to the hands that were used to store line, but that were also used as an ersatz reel, once can poles started using guides. I still do it this way, and find it has great advantages over a cane pole that has only a tip eye, and where the line is fastened at the tip as you do.\ I also do not use Dacron line. I use twisted, tarred bankline. Number nine, to be exact, or even larger, if I'm after a big catfish. Twisted bankline is far more versatile than braided line of any type. It not only holds its shape when needed, but makes a far stronger knoit, and can be untwisted to give you three thinner lines. Or twisted together with two more lengths to give you a far stronger line. I join the mono leader to the bankline with a uni knot, and joing the leader to the hook with a Palomar knot. I find a Palomar far better than an improved clince knot because it's easier to tie with cold, wet hands, and is even easy to tie in the dark. There are better and worse ways to rig a cane pole, but I'm not at all sure there is an incorrect way. Tying directly to the tip guide, or directly to the end of a cut pole, is the worst way because even if you have no guide, or no wire to make a guide, you can make a serviceable guide with a loop of line. At the same time, I've seen people from twelve year old boys to seventy-five year old women haul in massive catfish with cane poles that had the line tied directly to the tip guide.
Not sure if yall keep knifes as sharp as I do, but I avoid cuts by having fingernail clips on a neck lanyard , along with hook disgorged, or plyers, or forceps
Would you consider adding a few knots along the length of the pole as you spiral wrap to the tip, say every 18- 24 inches, an added benefit or unnecessary? Thanks!
Unrelated question but, how do you have your canoe tied down? I onyl see bungee straps? I ask cause I might be needing too tie one down too a ladder rack in the future
Very useful. My Dad gave me some 'fly rods' and one only had one guide and no reel seat- it's a cane pole. So when you want to break down the pole to fit in your car do you recommend just removing the arbor knot and wrapping the line around an empty spool?
It's a heavier braided type line for trolling or heavy fishing.. Since this cane fisherman is not trying to cast with it, he can use the heavy line as main line and finish it off with the lighter mono line that pan fish will accept. If he was going for catfish, he could probably just go Dacron to the hook.

yeah i do believe that fish was caught way earlier and just put on for the last shot it looked about alive and energetic as mush brains in the white house does!!!
