I'm gonna have to go with that it was real for two reasons: 1) "It was all just a dream" endings almost always suck. 2) Pulling that thing out of his nose would have been excruciating and entertainment companies generally tend to refrain from deliberately torturing their clients. It tends to cut down on repeat customers.
@AlexandrePlissken
@AlexandrePlissken 5 лет назад
Except that if it's actually a dream, that means Quaid is suffering from a paranoia episode, like the guy from Rekall explained (the one who sweats and gets shot in the head). Quaid is basically a prisonner in his own head at that point, and his brain is just making everything up as he goes along (including the nose part and getting hit in the balls three freaking times!), until he ends up getting lobotomized (hence the fade to white in the last shot of the movie).

In the movie, the script slant towards the events being real. However, the novelization is more ambiguous.

His character always stuck in my mind from this movie because he was a minor character but he had no fear of ice-cold intimidating Richter, making the snide comment about how Richter lost Quaid in the elevator and then directly facing him down in the "they're all connected" scene. I remember thinking "damn I wanna see a whole movie about this guy."

I'll admit, I do like Total Recall. TBH, I thought the "Is this real?" mind-screw in this worked better than Matrix. Better characters, and the not real (?) bits were much harder to distinguish. Even better, it doesn't take itself too seriously. And the spies actually *try* to fit in with the appropriate bits. And has better one liners. And Arnold. He at least shows emotion.

@troywright359
@troywright359 7 лет назад
what are you talking about? he can't dream about a scene he's not in? the company could have planted those scenes in his brain, to make it easier for his mind to accept a new girl straight away over his wife of x years, or to enable him to not feel bad about killing the bad guys I guess even though It is his dream, he isn't fully aware until he experiences it as real time.

@evawind3566
@evawind3566 8 лет назад
Thanks Darkling. I can see what your saying. But I have to add from my highschool physics class. If Quad's reflection is that way then he and his gone would need to be right next to the mirror. With the POV we are seeing Quad and the doctor would both need to be in the shot. Especially with the distance of the doctor from the mirror. Well that is my opinion.
@ChakatStripedfur
@ChakatStripedfur 6 лет назад
Actually, you _can_ see the doctor in the mirror, just not his entire body. If you look real close to the left side of the mirror, you'll see a tiny bit of the doctor's coat moving in the reflection.

So since this version of Total Recall was directed by Paul Verhoeven, what was it meant to satirize? He strikes me as the kind of "satirist" who fails at his job by making the thing he wanted to take down accidentally look awesome, like in Robocop and maybe Starship Troopers. Not Showgirls, though, that one is a dumpster fire.

+Victor Riquelme They're both really good movies, actually, with the new one being able to stand on its own as a generic Sci-Fi flic. The old one just wins for me because it's the one I saw first growing up, and even though it's cheesy as all fuck it's still my favorite of the two because of Arnold. That, and the cheesiness helps to make the movie what it is.

To answer your question. Assuming the building on Mars was pressurized to match Earth's, being exposed to the vacuum would not cause a person to explode violently. One can actually survive from being exposed if they are repressurized before 90 seconds and they didn't hold their breath (holding the breath would cause the lungs to rupture and be fatal) as well not suffer any serious damage. Your body does swell but it won't explode. The only time one would actually get torn apart from explosive decompression, would be if you were in a high pressure environment and it suddenly dropped like in the case of the Byford Dolphin accident.

I got more out of Arnold busting security equipments than anything I’ve felt watching expensive modern CGI... Oh, and that mask effect was also a practical effect. The reason it looked like a stiff Arnold Schwarzenegger in stop motion, was because they supposedly used the real Arnold to do it (what's known as stop motion with pixelation). Since the shot only used, what, 5 second of run time, imagining Arnie being able to sit through roughly 2 hours of moving a frame at a time, while maintaining the same facial expression, doesn't sound too out of the realm of believability.

Hi Nostalgia Critic,big fan I’m just responding to your question regarding the explosive decompression theory,the truth is that there was a tragedy involving some men in a Byford diving bell when a human error occurred in trying to work properly in order,then the atmosphere dropped from 9 atmospheres to 1 atmosphere in a fraction of a Sec causing some men to suffer serious injury’s and others to having there body’s explode and scattered in all directions. I’m not a genius but I’m guessing the less atmosphere the more air pressures is pressed on to your body.

I never quite got why Arnold's face at 9:50 is a puppet. That's super creepy! Probably that's because the animation of the mask is done in stop-motion, and doing stop-motion is almost impossible with a real actor... But I don't know it still seems absurd.

The Ham and pathos in many of the "acting" bits by Arnie helps basically to get over the bad parts of the effects quickly so it stays pretty entertaining all the way through. They knew they could not simply lean on the looks of things as that was still not really technically manageable to look convincing... so they took the weaknesses and ran with them.

I want a single player RPG game based on this movie. It's got fleshed out characters, an interesting world and lore, great aesthetics and Arnold fucking Schwarzenegger. Somebody get on it, I'll donate half of all I have on Patreon.

A lot of people are torn between it being a simulation and it being reality, but this entire movie and the plot, even the details play out like Quaid is having a vivid hallucination. Even the whole wrap a wet towel around your head sounds like a delusion your brain would conjure up during a hallucination. And the scene with the giant lady bomb head?? That is some ideal hallucination fodder.

All these years later, and I'm _still_ disappointed he didn't say "I'm the Nostalgia Critic, and I remember it for you wholesale." at the end as a nod towards the book.

Unfortunately it would probably be out of character for Critic, even thought it would be really funny joke :(
