Love that they remastered the best total war of all time. Just wished they added a coop campaign. Playing this gem with or against Friends would be a Dream come true
The main menu design with the silhouetted soldiers marching and fighting battles goes back all the way to the original Shogun: Total War. Medieval: Total War in 2002 had the same design too. I believe Shogun 2 was the first game not to follow this design decision as it utilised a background based on the in-game engine. Sadly I think they've abandoned this since then, as I can't recall it being in any other game from the series.
Thank you for the history lesson, I sadly haven’t played Shogun and Medieval so it’s interesting to hear it was the same back then. I’m actually really sad that they ended that style of main menu (but brought it back in Attila at least).
@@AndysTake Of course! I completely forgot about the menu for Attila. Strange how they abandoned the design for afew years then brought it back in 2015. Thanks for the repy!
I agree the gameplay looks awesome but the UI looks horrendous. Absolutely all over the place and the menu art being gone is just painful. The selection being yellow instead of green is also distasteful. I hope they go back to the normal UI and improve it visually instead of sticking with this one because it's newer.
I think the new UI is designed for modern higher resolution monitors. However, not all players have a 4k monitor. Moreover, it is disappointing that the excellent atmosphere and design of the original UI own have not been inherited. Some people will like the new UI, and it's probably functionally advanced. However, many old rome1 lovers, including me need an original UI and an original unit card. If we can't choose these, how can we call it remastered?
The complaints in this video are unbelievably nitpicky. The campaign map Italian mountains being more red (which is actually more realistic for Italy btw), the UI having circles for different menu sections when the original had the same, the arcs being orange, and the unit cards in battles having green rounded edges. I love the original Rome, it is one of the first games I ever played; I played the hell out of it for more than a decade, but the Remaster is better in every major way. I even grew to prefer the new UI.
This video is old, and I agree they’re nitpciky, that’s why I’ve made so many videos later about how much I love the game after a few updates from Feral
@@AndysTake I understand that the video is old, but I am saying the things you criticized that even existed at the time were nitpicky. I appreciate the response though for an old video like this 👍
@@schutzanzug6731 I'm not going to speak for all of Italy since idk, or northern Italy since the Alps are definitely grey, Southern Italy and even around Rome the mountains are more red. Even mount Vesuvius is red.
The thig that breaks the neck for me is the awkward building and recruiting queue placement and design, and the annoying new notifications system on top where old messages just pile up turn after turn - and this little oversght where they let you navigate through the messages with shortcuts, but force you to delete them by making you take the mouse all over there to click the button. This UI is an undercooked mess and gives me headaches. I'll pick original Rome's shortcomings over this any day.
Agree with almost everything you said. I dislike the new grass. Because both Rome and Rome Remastered is going for this stylised look, the long grass detracts from that and makes it look less clean. Compared to the original grass which looks way better in my opinion as seen here 7:55. Also I hope we get a mod that enables the old HUD with the added benefits of the remaster as mod support will be available from what I hear.
I like long grass somewhat. Idk why. In original rome 1 i always felt that battle maps are missing something, and when solders are hiding ing grass and you what grass doesn't reach their knees i felt it looks a bit off. Now this looks for me more interesting. And there could be more foliaged maps with some bushes ect.
The individuals in the units may be more varied but they look blurry and out of focus. The Original units may have been lower resolution but they still look clearer and defined. Look at the comparison battlefield footage at 10:41 with the clear RTW on the left and very blurry RTW-RM on the right. How can you say that is a graphical improvement?
I think that might be an issue with this video rather than the game itself. If you look at videos from MATN, for example, I believe in his first video on this game, he zoomed right up close to some units and they all looked really high resolution.
I think you did a good job summarizing things that have bothered me about the Remastered version. I still really like the remastered version. I've found that I have a tough time figuring out which units I selected during the battle scenes, wish the colors were more distinct. Maybe I'm using a higher difficulty level then I did when I was younger, but the CPU seems a lot smarter and more difficult. I am definitely enjoying it more since I can't just roll through territories anymore.
Thank you for making this video. I'm so happy they're remastering Rome Total War, but I really do want them to make it as good as they can. With the white clouds on arrows etc, can we not at least be allowed to turn it on or off? It looks so stupid.. Would you want to see a Co-op Campaign be implemented?
Thank you for the kind words, my guy! I'd absolutely love a co-op campaign. Honestly, my single biggest regret with any post Medieval 2 Total War game is the lack of hotseat campaigns, but at least they've had online multiplayer campaigns. I see NO reason why they cannot implement it here either, so... yeah. I really hope we get it! What about you?
This is the very first pc game i owned on my laptop and was hoping they'd remaster it one day and my prayers have been answered! they should remaster all old games shouldn't they just feel like games these days are a bit over the top.
I agree, the campaign map looks way too bright and unrealistic, I wished it was more like medieval 2, also I don't like the UI, especially the battle ui with round boxes and green coloured cards... but who knows they'll probably make a mod to fix that, for the rest I'm super excited, also coop campaign it's a must, I don't know if they are limited by the engine so maybe that's the reason
Personally, I could not imagine how the engine would limit online coop campaigns. Especially when they’ve managed to do so many things with the game, like completely revamp the UI and all the graphical mechanics like changing unit visuals to where they are recruited from, you know? I just hope they decide to add it in!
To be fair the mountains around mt vesuvius ar kinda brown reddish in colour and those on the main land like the alps are still grey. I get that the colours are popping hard and its kinda oversaturated but I like it. Also the new menus and ''Art'' is kinda good and gives it a modernish tint to it for me and I like that the devs had the confidence to alter and change some things not a 100% carbon copy. The fact the UI and symbols are more high res combined with the management features are good (Im playing barbarian invasion remastered at the moment). Rome total war and BI expansion will always hold a place in my heart also medieval 2 total war. Games after that kinda lost its charm for me.
I think trails on projectiles are actually useful in battles, knowing when your ranged troops are effectively firing is helpful when zoomed out in larger engagements. Sure, you should be able to toggle it, but I personally appreciate this update as playing ME2 and Rome can sometimes be straining when your arrows become invisible ( + not having an indicator to know if they're in range can also be annoying when combined with barely visible projectiles.)
I don’t hate the new UI - while I don’t like the look of it, I’ll wait until I use it before I make my mind up. How easy would it be for modders to overhaul the UI to make it more like the original? Unless I really like the new UI, I can see myself installing such a mod in a heartbeat.
@@AndysTake hopefully the remastering team is open to giving us options with the UI then. Considering it’s one of the biggest complaints so far, and they’ve been seemingly open to changing things based off of feedback already (such as when Many A True Nerd complained about the new population mechanics, and then they added an option to have it be classic with the other new additions). The remastering team seem to be very passionate about remastering the game, so I hope they’ll continue to give it care after it’s released. With any luck, if they’re given the chance to remaster Medieval II, it’ll be just what the community want.
@@AlexanderDiviFilius I think the Many a True Nerd change was just something they told him could be changed in the game files, changing a value from 0 to 1, and not an in-game setting?
I've been asking on many videos if you can turn off the light trails of the pila and arrows and people say you can but if you can't it's almost a deal breaker for me. One of my favourite things in RTW was seeing a legion all throw their pila or seeing a hail of arrows. I want RTW to be gritty not world of warcraft or Valorant style. I hate it. Hopefully it can be mudded out quickly.
Merchants- new mechanics are always good. Not when you see how its implemented:D I mean, they increase the time when turn ends and they does not really do something important. It is just a mechanic which their implemented poorly because merchants could do so much more: Increase relations with other nations, building trade routes with other nations by letting them for example one of them stay in your city and the other in the neighbouring city where you have a trade agreement. This way, merchants are also kind of spies but also helpful for keeping relations intact. Also that would make trade agreements way more impactful. Instead, you can only take them to a rescource and let them stay there for the rest of their life:D
I think im the only one that likes the arrow trails lol. Also the range markers are very welcome ! (Although I think they are a tad too big). I really prefer this simplicity on the UI. Maybe just make things less round 🤷♂️. Also, I've heard there is a saturation slider, so colours shouldn't be a problem ! I could never get on newer ttw titles except for WH just because of how many things are on the screen at all times.
You know what, I think 3K is a perfectly good game, BUT, the UI on the campaign map is absolutely horrendous, I just can’t play it. All the city names are up at once, there’s so much cluttering the screen, I just can’t play it without going crazy. So I feel you.
If you want simplicity then the original UI is best. Arrow trails are dumb. I have never seen arrow trails. The original showed the actual projectiles which was great and impressive.
@@hallodunase yeah, but nostalgia hits very hard with this one and im sure its super difficult to make remaster but at the same time do every bit of detail correct to stay true to original
Totally agree with this vid. I have raised this in the forums but will probably not be noticed. The original UI was fine. Just make it scalable. And the unit cards were also better in original. The new map is just awful. yes its great that the remaster is being done but stop messing with what make the original so great or players will loose the romance with this game.
Thank you for watching my friend, I’m happy you enjoyed the video! I’m very excited to try the game out, but parts of this UI seems just.. yeah... I hope you’ll sub for more, mate!
All they had to do was make the graphics better and maybe some controls. As for anything else, if it ain't broke don't fix it. The more I play it the less I like it.
ui looks like some rome themed simcity game. not a fan of this one, but not a fan of the original one either. also, some balancing would be nice. eastern infantry still routs too easily
I just can't stand the new UI, Absolutely terrible. For me personally, it is to much and unfortunately, the classic will be the one for me, and until this is fixed, the remaster will be on the shelf.
finally someone not living inside CA´s rectum as someone who still plays RTW on XP ,,, the original is still better ,,, including graphically the color of the floor and the units is off ,,they dont match,, this is why the units in the new one look like a mod rather than actual units,,, i am not sure how modding will be in the new one , in the old one i didnt allow any faction to build great or epic walls except the senate , so that i wouldn't be stuck fighting the same epic walls over and over again , (also if you own gold edition you can bring BI units into RTW and vice versa) but this is all stuff i can live with i am much more concerned about the gameplay ,all units in RTW have their own weight so i wont be convinced they succeeded until i see it with my own eyes overall i am glad none XP gamers will have a shot on RTW , on XP it on average crashes once every 60-80 gaming hours (with mods) but on win10 it barely runs at all oh and BURN EVERY HERETIC USING A DIFFERENT UNIT SIZE THAN 80 MEN PER Century aka the original Roman size ,, if you dont beleive me try it doesnt matter if 80 men Legionary formations in RTW, 80 men Line infantry in ETW ,or 60 men knight and samurai in shogun THESE UNITS SIZED were used in history for a reason , they make you more agile but not too weak using 6 x 80 men to form a cohort , an actual one makes sense in ETW in turns Light infantry and grenadiers into 40 men platoons in addition to the now actual 80 men company of line infantry ,,,,anyone not using the proper size in my view is a pleb so Andy ...09:02 I LIKE WHAT YA GOT GOOD JOB :) ...and great vid too
Thanks for the great video. But what a tonedeaf remaster. These remasters really need to be made by genuine fans of the original. Overall it looks like a 100% negative change. I will not be trying it out.
I played the original for more than a decade and it's one of my favorite games, and I love the remaster. Idk how you can say it's "tonedeaf" when the only major complaints are the UI having circles, orange arcs, and green on the unit cards. In every other way it's a major improvement, and even I even grew to prefer the new UI.
@@aleaiactaest6503 For sure, talking about brightness and gamma. But gamma isn’t the same as the saturation built into the engine’s graphics, which I believe is what we’re talking about here :)
4:36 WTF what is this? I heard the user interface is bad in remaster... but this much?.. Was debating taking this up or Rome 2 on Steam sale, WHY did they make the UI more complicated and unusable?!
They luckily updated it slightly, so you can have larger or the regular small UI description windows now. But yeah it’s not like in the OG, but it’s better than it was
I came here for that too, I have never heard if they ever fixed the epic siege tower bug! Nobody has ever mentioned it and even modders were never able to really fix it in the original game.
Where did you see that? I believe Many a True Nerd complained about it, so I assume he couldn’t turn it off, because he was very specific about what he could turn off and on. The population mechanic, for example.
@@Telescuffle Thank you so much, I hope I won’t disappoint! Go to his video here to see what I’m referring to, skip to 18:43: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pTI-GEupRuU.html
This is a shame seems like yet another classic PC game ruined by modern remaster. I hope that the same don't happen to Age Of Mythology which is also being remastered and also that the original game doesn't get erased from video game history so they end up justifying players to only have access to a remaster version. I think these practices from PC gaming companies definitely need to stop since if the original versions end up working fine than it should be a option for players as well. If it still works than leave it as is. I have been looking everywhere for the original version also released in 2004 and its very hard to find has lots of people Online asking and having problems with CD-keys too. I kinda miss playing the original game and I don't like some of those casual changes and also re-textures too added to it, but at least its not as bad as Warcraft 3 Remaster or Diablo from Blizzard.
I think you hit the nail on the hit that this game DEFINITELY has mobile design considerations all over it, from UI to graphics. This was either meant to be ported to mobile, or will be ported in the near future That being said, I'm counting mods to hopefully fix this game where we need to go and make this an eternal classic
@@AndysTake yes, make back up files just incase tho. Export descriptive units should be the file for editing units. I put base level of farms to 0, I forget which file it is too edit that but in in maps folder I think
If you showed someone who never played the original or seen the remastered and told them which came out more recently I honestly think they’d pick the original, it just looks better.
I'm going to just state my opinion which will vastly differ from yours. 1) I don't mind the saturation - the Ancient world wasn't grounded or gritty - I mean a Roman city would have looked more colorful than the typical all whiteness that surrounds it - for me at least. One needs to look at Commodus's palace in the Fall of the Roman Empire. 2) The UI clutter - what about EUIV? I would want Paradox games to be simpler but if I were to say that I don't think it'd be a very popular opinion. I welcome the UI having more options because I want RTW for me at least to have more depth, it kind off/kind off didn't for me when playing the older title as it was more simplistic. EUIV has so much confusing UI I don't get why players don't call it out for not simplifying. Not arguing, because I would have wanted a more classic UI option: I.e if this is a remaster, then there should be an option to play the classic square box style that Rome total war had. And I am not a fan of the arrow ranges - they fit well in Napoleon and Empire, not so much in other areas. 3) What I would have preferred is what Europa Barbaroum did by giving each faction its own specific UI. Many mods do this, but it wouldn't hurt so much. 4) You mention 3k I think in the comment section that you couldn't get the UI. For years I read many total war fans wanting a total war with paradox's mechanics or even UI. Have I read wrong? It seems CA is starting to adopt a more Paradox-style campaign - it's evident with Troy and 3k - what are your thoughts on this? That's my opinion I guess?
Great to hear from you, I honestly don’t think our opinions vary much at all. I too want more depth in Rome, so that’s not an issue. I would have loved more historical colours in the Roman cities, that is not my issue. My issue is just that the map looked over saturated, so unrealistically vibrant and colourful, but I love colour, so a more natural look is all I’m saying. Also, I’m not opposed to UI changes, I just find that the UI in the remaster come from literally all side of the screen and is not using the screen space real estate that Ui’s in paradox game are normally very good at (in my opinion). In the remaster, main reason for this is the the UI is coming from all sides, taking up too much space, when the UI in the original Rome was really good at leaving you room for the menu and the campaign map at the same time.
@@AndysTake You made a very good point for historical colors in the Roman cities. I shall make a point of this in my video when I make a review of this game so hopefully Feral can one day see my vid or something like that. When I looked at the campaign map saturation - you'll note that Rome looked very orangey, something straight out of a orange filter that Hollywood uses every time they depict Mexico - yellow-orange filter. That said, I like it, but others might not. The second thing is I had a look at Parthia from another video, it didn't seem much saturated to me, heck the desert setting is more dried out - to my eyes I mean. I can see what you mean that the UI is all over the place and it needs to be fixed in certain areas certainly
@@MedjayofFaiyum Great! And yes I know the filter you are talking about. Luckily, we can adjust the map vibrancy in the game, so hopefully it will look a bit better. And maybe mods can change it up a bit as well!
I felt that Rome 2 address everything we wanted in Rome 1. For example, Naval warfare and Co op mode vs just the 1vs 1 from the original. It also added more faction and filled in the gap from just "rebel settlements" that makes the game more dynamic and kenetic. The "remastered" looks like a cheap copy of Rome 1. Takes out all of the assets and add ins that made Rome 2 as grand as it is.
@@grunt2926 in Rome 2 they took away population they took out forts they took out outposts the replenishment mechanic is bad you can’t make armies without generals and there’s a lot more Rome 2 is not an upgrade to Rome 1 in anyway other than graphics probably and factions but even then I feel like the faction rosters are pretty empty just reskin Guys with better stats and nobody plays naval battles which actually I like but it seems like people don’t like and it’s not as moddible as Rome 1
Those menu screens look like the cheap cinematics you would see on low budget wii games. I mean it looks "ok" but not as action inducing as the original and just doesn't give you the same feeling.
