My (Joshua Gallagher, 17) drum cover of what I believe is probably THE best pop song of all time, Toto's "Rosanna" from their 1982 release "Toto IV".

A few fun facts, this song hosts one of the greatest drum beats ever called "The Porcaro Shuffle" which the master Jeff Porcaro derived from "The Purdie Shuffle" by Bernard Purdie and John Bonhams half-time shuffle in Led Zeppelins "Fool in the Rain". I tried playing this one as close to Jeff's version as I could but there are a few of Simon Phillips, as well as my own influence in there. The song contains (as far as I'm aware) more than 30 tracks of instruments and I'll admit I was afraid to cover this song because I knew how difficult it would be to master the groove! Also Toto are just an incredible band, they are all absolutely insane players and one of the tighest bands in the world, even today! This was also the last cover/recording I filmed as a high school student!
I also dedicate this cover to Jeff Porcaro, one of the greatest drummers to have lived (there are quite a few nods to Jeff in this video as you'll see :D) as well as his brother and former bandmate Mike Porcaro who is currently suffering from the horrible disease known as ALS, my prayers go out to him, the Groovemeister!
My band Smooth Intentions recorded the backing track for this song, which I spent countless hours in my room analysing the track and each individual instrument as well as trying to play the tremendously difficult keyboard solo! Here is our Facebook page if you want to "like" it www.facebook.co...

Josh, you did an excellent job! I’ve been a drummer for over 30 years and wish I can play that song with it’s challenging half time shuffle as well as you. You played it effortlessly. Ghost note comments? you’ve got to be kidding me! I heard them. No one should be compared to Jeff Porcaro, not even Jeff played that song the same way every time. As drummers we all learn from each other and try to develop our own personal style and feel. It’s something that just can’t be taught. I think even Jeff himself conveyed that in one of his teaching videos. Josh, you have a special talent. I’m sure if Jeff heard your interpretation of Rosanna he would smile and give a thumbs up! Again it was excellent. Look foward to more.

Lol not sure why so many people are saying "where are the ghost notes"? I did play them as you can hear and see in the vid, I could probably have played them a touch louder or adjusted the compression a bit so it didn't choke them as much but I can hear and see them there haha. I'm guessing you watch the intro and go "nope no ghost notes on every triplet not watching the rest" (where I do bring the whole lot in). On the original recording Jeff actually didn't start playing them on every triplet until the first verse, the intro he adds a few here and there then brings in the whole lot in the first verse and even drops out a few in some of the chorus, so if anything like someone below said I'm playing too many in the chorus!

joshkosh95 I'm only hearing this on my phone and thus, wouldn't be able to hear them anyway but if I may suggest coming out of the center of the snare a bit, I think your ghosts might translate better to the audience. Either way, this is pretty cool.

Man, I don't know why they argue about your technique, I think you have a great technique. But I don't care, beyond technique, most important you have this little something that made Jeff my favourite. It is simple and clear and it's called '' the groove'' ah ah and if you don't have it, you can work your whole lifetime!! But you, you have it and it doesn't take more than 5 seconds to feel it! Thanks a lot!

Y am I so impressed with not only your play, but how well u tucked the hats in close to the snare, despite have 2 kicks and hats on a stand? Very well done. Too many sacrifice hi hats placement to incorporate the left kick. All while blowing bubbles. Killer job, brohan.

Josh I am a JP fan. I agree with the comment that this is the best cover of Roseanna on RU-vid. You have not just the shuffle, but also the feel for the song. You were relaxed and in the pocket. You did play the ghost notes although they did not come thru as much in the mix as some would like. Neither did JP's during many live performances that were recorded. I think you did an excellent job with this. The transitional fills were spot on...and you put your own spin on one or two. Excellent job!!!

I've been playing since I was a wee lil' tot, built makeshift kits from plastic, wood, hubcaps, etc until I got my own kit at 12 when Jeff Pocaro's Rosanna shuffle was popular on the radio, and man that demonstration of a difficult rhythm to stay steady is impressive. KUDOS to you. Nice job, man!

Groove is a feeling. Once you get more comfortable with it, it will come more natural and you get a more groovy feel. But once again your doing pretty good where your at!

Josh, I did this on my channel about a year ago when I was ten and I must say, you are great at what you do. I love the way you make the ghost just hearable for a drummer, I am guessing this is for drummers. You can just barely hear them like they are "ghosts". Great job dude!

Got here from Jeff Pocaro's break down video....this is freakin' awesome. Both the execution and kit sound is amazing. This kid just inspired me to stop being a lazy bastard, and practice guitar before what's left of my skill completely evaporate. And for the idiots not liking the gum, I wouldn't want to be in your band. That "cocky attitude" is exactly what you want from the guy driving a band. That's how fucking rockstars work.

The ghost notes aren't coming through because of the snare head and possibly tuning, you need to switch to a coated ambassador and tighten the lugs slightly. Find the dead lug on top and bottom and tape it to the rim (slightly). Tune your drums with your mics and headphones on, a mic hears the drum differently than you ears do. Overall great job!

I could make it 44 because i cant do the rosanna shuffle... but i wont, because i'm not mean or stupid. Great cover and if you can play like that at 17 then "stick" with it because you are a great drummer. Well done!

Hi! Thanks for the compliments! I'm 18 now and I started percussion lessons in grade 6 when I was 10 and took those for 2 years, learning the basics like posture/stick grips, rudiments, sheet reading mainly all for the snare drum and lots of xylophone lessons. We did a bit of drum kit stuff (which was what I was most keen on!) but not loads, so I mainly taught myself how to play the drum kit by ear from then on, with some lessons here and there in early high school. That's cool! I wish him all the best!

I see people bitching about the chewing gum. I think I should start chewing gum while playing since I have this strange habit to keep time count by rubbing my teeth together while playing technically demanding songs. I don't think that's going to be very good for my teeth in a long run. Great cover by the way. Rosanna isn't one of those 'easy to keep in time' songs.

...True, but the ghost notes ARE in there I just mastered it "too hot" which took out a lot of the dynamics mainly the ghost notes and made the hi hat significantly louder. I also played the intro without them and slowly built them in as Jeff did on the original. And I'm in no way rich, nor is my family haha

Dude, good job! :-) About the ghost notes: not only I can see you playing them, I can hear them as well. Perhaps people are just not noticing them because of the mix, it's not showing them as much as the original tune, perhaps, but they're there.

Nice job...nailed the drum sound...nobody is going to play this exactly like Jeff, but this was well done...capturing the drum sound helped a lot! Plus you looked cool playing.The DB fills are what Simon would do...if you are only 17 when you did this, impressive...next time I would NAIL the groove like the LP. Stick w/the original fills. Again...the drum sound was excellent bro.
