I honestly believe that the coach got his tactics wrong in this game. Chelsea would have benefited with a narrower attacking front three. Granted the space is great for creative players like Hazard and Willian (I love watching Willian “freeze” a defense) but for all of that work, they don’t have a dependable target man in Morata. Morata plays better with close 1-2 passes for his goals. If Chelsea wants to lob crosses into the box, Giroud is the better option. Giroud is also better at holding up play to allow other teammates to run under to create opportunities especially the likes of Hazard, Willian or Pedro. In a 4 man back line, David Luiz is a liability (as shown in Son’s goal). The Brazilian is better suited as a holding mid than he is at CB. He only worked well in Conte’s scheme since the 3-4-3 allowed him to carry the ball forward while the other two CB’s covered for him (and he is an excellent long passer). I’m going to catch hell for this, Cahill is a better CB in this formation than Luiz. I also believe that Chelsea has one of the best central midfield trios in the EPL right now (Kovacic, Kante & Jorginho) with the Barkley option. Having said that, Jorginho was having a bad game and Kante was misassigned. Conversely, Ponch got his tactics right and Tottenham executed very well = Miserable game for Chelsea fans.
