How would you structure your girls on the field? For example, would you position them directly opposite the opposing players, or would you set up one girl on the right and two on the left? My theory is to have one girl on the right and two on the left, as most teams are better at executing plays from right to left than from left to right, especially when it comes to long balls, if they can be thrown and thats coming purely from a defensive point of view, But I would love to hear your thoughts and any tips you might have on how you would set up your girls. And this is playing social touch by the way 😅

Depends. Your method of thinking was very popular for a number of years. My preference because of playing only 5 girls is have them simply on the close side to conserve energy thus allowing 3 pods of boys. In attack if you have a girl on girl match up you can base your game off sweeper platforms. If you have a mis-match you can play more 33 & 32 peel plays. Unless of course you want to involve your girls in attack. In defense put your girl on the side to counter the passing strength you see in the opposition which as you said is more than likely to be right to left passing.

Indeed, the rule says: 16.3 An attacking player in support of the player in Possession may move as necessary to achieve a supporting position but must not grab, hold, push or otherwise deliberately interfere with a defending player attempting to make a Touch Perhaps the "attempting to make a Touch" part should be removed since the definition of obstruction in the glossary states: Obstruction: A deliberate attempt by either an attacking or defending player to gain an unfair Advantage by interfering with the opposition to prevent them from gaining a rightful Advantage This seems clearer and would explicitly ban such tactics. I think the necessity for it to be deliberate is also problematic. How can refs judge intent? And if it still leads to an unfair advantage, why shouldn't the outcome be the same?

Sounds like we agree that the 'attempting to make a touch' really does make a huge difference to the way this rule is written to the way it should be enforced. Surely it would not be difficult to remove that and say that a defender cannot be deliberately obstructed.

@@touch.screen Yeah, I think it's reasonable to interpret "attempting to make a Touch" as including getting onside. Otherwise there's no rule to prohibit the dumper from holding back the toucher in any way. That said, a ref can easily miss obstruction like this with everything else they're looking out for at the time, especially lower level refs like myself. In any case, it's by no means the worst oversight in the rulebook.

I think we can all agree that, regardless of the exact wording of the rule (which is probably not ideal in this case), the spirit of the rule is that such tactics are not legal and liable to penalty. The movement of the attacking player is to clearly continue to move forward and he makes no effort to realign, so he is clearly not trying to "achieve a supporting position" (in fact you could argue he is offside himself as he is in front of the ball). Another thing is for the referee to catch this, as we would typically have our eyes on the ball - I don't think I would ever manage to catch it myself, and the refs on this final were some of the very best in the world...😅

@@jordesque it’s very easily missed. I think you have to have seen it a few times to pick up on it. I am ok with it being missed because we can now work with our middle defenders about what they can do to make sure they don’t find themselves in this situation.
