My equipment Just Keeps Breaking! Secrets of Sawmilling Pros - Making flat wood. Sawmills in Action! Make Money With a Sawmill! - Secrets of the Pros and showing Sawmills in Action! I'm Robert Milton, "The Sawmill Professor," a professional sawmiller and business owner who teaches sawmill tips and tricks to make your lumber as good as ours at Hobby Hardwood Alabama - ranked as producing the highest quality wood in Alabama, if not the country. / @hobbyhardwoodalabama . I am a retired aerospace engineer, my wife is a retired engineer at NASA, and we are a multimillion dollar, Dunn and Bradstreet listed, A+ rated BBB business. We used to build very high end houses and furniture using our lumber, but now sell it retail all over the country, and teach others to do the same.
We started with a chainsaw mill, upgraded to a portable manaul sawmill, then a production bandsaw mill. We are not a video company, but we are a real lumber company, and want to show others some of our money making and business sawmill techniques. This video is another example of sawmilling for our business, Hobby Hardwood, Alabama. We show how we mill logs, dry them and other things on our outdoor farm.

Perfect timing on this video. Made me feel better 😊.I thought I was being picked on with my misfortunes yesterday and day before. My generator is the same as yours went down (water pump). Lighting took out internet, wall plugs, ac unit, and blew the water line 3 foot in the ground, new excavator acting up, and the list grows. Your right. More stuff, more repairs!! Seriously!!😮 Solution, good friends, and taking a vacation with the wife and dog! And yes , more prayers.

When we were at Jake’s I saw he had his brakes off too, and there was less chirp when he started the blade like yours, guess I’ll back mine off too and save my belt, keep the videos coming sir

About the mag pickup on your generator, it may have metal fileing on it. You just mark it how deep it is, unplug it and unscrew it and check for metal pieces on it. Wipe them off and reinstall. If that clears the problem but they return later you probably have metal on your flywheel. Remove the mag pickup again, get some electro clean(non conductive) spin the engine over a few rotations while spraying the flywheel ring gear. Reassemble and try it. I've corrected several generators this way.

Greg from northern Michigan. Some days go like this. Everything is fine, and them Whamo, it hits you square in the face. I like how you and Martha pick yourself up, figure things out, and get right after making the needed repairs quickly. This saves you valuable time and lots of money too ! In my 40+ years of engineering, I have seen lots of situations go off the rails. It's how quickly you react and work thru these issues that helps your business succeed. On the bright side ... there should be allot of downed trees available in your area at rock bottom prices.

Hey Robert, good morning. I have a question you may be able to answer. How often are you changing blades on your mill? Mostly talking about hardwood cuts. I know each wood is alittle different and blades too, but about how many logs or BF are you getting out of each blade. Thanks for your time. -Jeremy

I don't go by an absolute bdft sawn number, but swap out when they start to show dullness or my cut quality drops, typically at lunch time and then at the end of the day. Sometimes I may go a whole day on one band, sometimes a pallet of 600 bdft of lumber will have one dull. Since I sharpen and set my own, it's much easier to rework a slightly dull band than a really dull band. Kind of like it takes a lot more effort to sharpen a really dull knife than just touch up a slightly dull one. My sharpener setup will do a band in 3 minutes, so it's not really a big deal. I have also found that in most cases, a properly resharpened and set band will cut as good, or many times better, than a brand new one.

I should be getting my new lt40 wide in about a month. Do you use the debarked. I noticed you didn’t use it on this video. Is that because you had already got done to cant. New milling and upgrading so I look forward to finding past videos to help reduce some of the mistakes I know I will probably make anyway since my memory is about as long as my foot anymore. Thanks so much for the ones I have seen so far
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama Месяц назад
Debarkers are very good for dirty bark, and that's the only time I use one. However, many people get fixated on them, and forget the main purpose is to mill straight wood, not save their band from getting prematurley dull. So in my mind, the debarker is way down the list of things I think about when sawing, and when you watch my other videos I will put it against the log as the last thing in the process.
@benjaminabadeer9489
@benjaminabadeer9489 14 дней назад
Robert, since you have a water supply close to your sawmill, do you take the time to pressure wash the outside of your logs to remove dirt/bark? (I know you have a debarker, but use it as a lower priority as mentioned in another comment). Is it with the time compared to improving blade life? Big Blue did a great job moving that whole brush pile. Did you salvage any saw logs from the tree?
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama 13 дней назад
I used to pressure wash logs before I had a debarker, but it was a wet, sloppy mess, especially during the winter. It also takes significant time maybe 5 minutes a log, our so, 10 logs means I just lost an hour of sawing time. There are sawing techniques for keeping the band in clean wood, and minimizing bark contact, I do it all the time but surprisingly have not ever put it on the video yet, so I will do that. It will greatly help folks who don't have a debarker. Great suggestion for a video! I did get a couple nice logs out of the big oak that got knocked over. Thanks of rwatcihg a commenting.

Watch all your videos. Question,,, if your leveling the log for high quality lumber, how come you don't end up with a tapered cant.
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama Месяц назад
Good question. The highest grade lumber always comes from the more outside, or jacket boards and as cuts get closer to the center of the log, grade goes down, so I make correction cuts as soon as possible on a low grade face as it appears, to get to a parallel cant.
