River Dee, Scotland Fantastic little micro Canoe adventure on the Scottish Dee . we had a decision to make whether to satay on or get off as levels rose . Hard Decision. #camping #survival #adventure
percentage of being the right call and going for a swim were both the same: 100%. The Dee is relentless and in high water, there's just no margin. I think like 60-70km of the 100km total distance is whitewater!
Yeh, it would have been a long swim in cold weather and very fast water. We would have been swamped for sure. We gad a good little adventure though 🙂. Cheers Eze 👍
It must have been bad if you decided to call it mate. There's river and there's RIVER! I could tell that wasn't for the faint hearted. You definitely made the right decision. What a run though, 30 bloody KM's in a day, that's half of the Caledonian mate, wow!! Loved it pal
Aye it was flowing fast, if it wasn't dark so early, we'd have smashed 50 km easy I reckon. Was a good trip Ants. Plenty of rapids to keep your concentration up 🙂🙂. Cheers Ants, atb Rick n Billydog
Enjoyed the video, It is a shame you didn't get to complete your trip, still looked good though and the autumn colours lining the banks were stunning. Right decision I think, the water levels went crazy and still haven't recovered!
Yeh cheers Paul, we'll have to nip up again in the New Year and have another run. It's a great river as you know yourself 🙂👍. Plenty of entertainment and route finding . Cheers for watching Paul, hope youre all well Atb Rick n Billydog
In a canoe their are right decisions and daft decisions, from what you said about the river level on the second day, and seeing the amount of water you shipped on the first day you made the right decision. The river will still be there, and so will you and your boat. Hope you're well mate, and Billy Dog too.
Definitely Simon, I might get up there early next year if there's a steady forecast and flows are looking good. I've run it at lower levels so be good to do it at a high medium 👍. It was on a high our first day which was good but upto a Huge the next day . Its just hard to self rescue safely n pick up the pieces in those flows . Cheers for watching Simon. Have a great week Atb Rick n Billydog
Really enjoyed this one, hope to see on more exciting adventures soon. I could tell how disappointed you were having not completed your mission, good for you if your instincts said leave it out, I'm sure your son learned something from you there mate. Keep up the great work 🍻
Hey cheers, cyeh it was great up there but it's always hard deciding to get off the river. Temptation is always there to just get on n carry on but I reckon it could have got messy and the rivers not going anywhere. It'll still be there in the New Year for another visit 🙂🙂. Cheers for watching 👍 Atb Rick n Billydog
Aye Nick, definitely mate 🙂🙂👍. Cheers Nick, would have been perfect if the level had stayed on a high but a huge was a bit too much for a fully loaded tandem 🙂. Cheers for watching Nick Atb mate Rick n Billydog
Yeh cheers Trev 🙂👍. Definitely be back up there before too long . Looking at a long run of the Welsh Dee down your way before too long, maybe from Bala to Llangollen 👍. I'll let ya know when if you fancy. Have a top week mate Atb Rick n Billydog
Cheers Patricia 🙂🙂. Yeh it's always great to share a trip with one of your own. We had a great time. Thanks for watching Patricia Atb Rick n Jack n Billydog
Seemed like a very sensible decision to me. We all like a bit of risk, but its life or death with water. All about risk/reward. Any road up, I'd have bugger all to watch if something happened to you. The 1st day was a banger anyway. Glad you both lived to fight another day. Bummer about the leaking tent too. Thanks again for sharing your adventures Rick. 👍🏼
Cheers Mark 😀 😀😀. Aye the first day was great, a proper good river . Jack's up there at the minute with his Kayak enjoying the flows. Definitely wasn't great conditions for a fully loaded open canoe that second day but hey, the river ain't going nowhere. I'll have to get up there again in the New Year 🙂. Thanks for watching Mark, have a great week mate Atb Rick n Billydog
Pair of wimps 😂 Very much the right call! Theres old paddlers and bold paddlers, but not many old bold paddlers! Amazing how heavy a swamped boat is, not much chance of making an eddy to bail. Glad you didn't die, its hard to find good instructors😂😂
Haha yeh James, I'm an older , balder paddler . I'll leave the bold paddling to the young hot shots lol. Aye there's some serious weight in a flooded canoe and in those flows it'd be like trying to stop a double decker bus 😆. Cheers James mate 🙂👍. See ya soon, atb Rick n Billydog
Ahhh such a shame the weather closed in buddy but youve gotta think safety 1st and i say good call. Youre right about having adventures with your kids, i love getting out with my lad Cam, always something new to learn and lots of memories made. Cheers Rick 🤙🏻🔥🙂
Too right Paul, gotta make the most of the time with the kids when they want to adventure with us. My lad Jack's back up there now in his kayak making the most of the high flows. Cheers Paul, atb mate 👍
Hoi Rick, yeah great autumn colours. I can understand that you got off the river, high water is not something to underestimate. Good first day, nice night in a leaking tent. See you in your next adventure.
Haha yeh, cheers Tinus , luckily I had a light weight bivi bag so I got in that as well and it kept my feet n sleeping bag dry 😀. Yeh, better safe than sorry n was a great first day 🙂. Cheers Tinus, atb Rick n Billydog 👍
Cheers Joe, aye you can't beat nature. Gotta work with it and give it a bit of respect when required 🙂🙂🙂🙂. Cheers for watching too Joe Atb mate, I'll be camping up your way tomorrow night 👍 Rick n Billydog
Better safe than sorry Rick . Good lad Jack 'volunteering' to go get the car . Some stunning scenery going on around there , autumn colours , you gotta love em . Time for a new tent maybe , but knowing you a slosh with some hammerite an it'll be reet . Take it easy pal .
Haha cheers Neil lol 😆 hammerite 😆😆. Yeh I think its seen better days n once you've lost confidence in the tent, vits not the same. Dread to think what it would be like on a mountain top in driving rain 😆. Looked like you had a top camp int mountains this weekend 🙂👍. Yeh the colours are bloody amazing. The action cam doesn't do em justice. Aye Jack did a good job with thumbing lifts and to top it off my car battery was flat when he got there lol. He had to flag someone down for a jump start lol 😆 ( He weren't impressed) 😆😆. Cheers Neil, have a top week mate Atb Rick n Jack 👍
Haha your definitely right, was out for the count that second night 😆😆. Yeh, always hard making that sort of call lol . Cheers mate, have a top week Atb Rick n Billydog 👍
Yeh, was a good blast 🙂👍. I've not changed the yolk around but it might have been in the past. Balances well on the shoulders though 🙂. Cheers fella, hope you've had a top weekend Atb Rick n Billydog 👍
Lovely place is Braemar, little cafe there does venison or wild boar burger both very tasty.Better safe than sorry mate river be there for another adventure, can be very unforgiving them rivers up Scotland specially when been alot of rain.Food looked good pal and another great video.
Cheers Stu, yeh it's an absolutely beautiful area. Great villages and people. Cant wait to go back again. My lad Jacks set off back up Scotland tonight to the Glen Etive area and then onto Glen Nevis with the kayaks n climbing gear 🙂 Cheers for watching Stu Atb mate Rick n Billydog
Cheers Martin, yeh levels would have made a self rescue difficult 🙂. Was still a good little adventure with my lad though. Have a great week Martin Atb Rick n Billydog
Cheers Dave, yeh was great to get another trip in with Jack. Beautiful place and people again. I'll be back ip there before too long. Cheers Dave mate, have a great week Atb Rick n Billydog
Eh Rik that was ace, that was a call made from experience so definitely the right thing. I did a solo round trip of 18 hrs driving 3 weeks ago as had to abort loch shiel circuit due to weather 😢...gutted but im alive. Love yor adventures mate.
Yeh David, its hard making the call sometimes ain't it but we know what we're doing and the rest of the river ain't going nowhere 🙂. Yeh the Loch Sheil circuit is remote ain't it. Not much help out there if you get in trouble. Fantastic trip though and it'll still be there when the weathers better. We were lucky last time we were over there n greater with perfect conditions. Cheers David mate, have a great week ahead Atb Rick n Billydog
Aye Jimmy 🙂👍. Was a great little trip though. Beautiful place. The colours are amazing this time of year. The action cam just doesn't do them justice 🙂. Cheers Jimmy, hope you've had a top weekend mate Atb Rick n Billydog
@@RickTOutdoorAdventure1969 had a very wet night in the woods mate was supposed to be out two nights but felt crap this morning so headed home Scotland is definitely an amazing place 😎😎👍👍
Live to see another day, like you said at the start of the video memories with the kids is precious, a good decision, also shows others watching that a sensible decision is always the right decision. Fantastic example set with a good learning for the reasons why.
Cheers Andy, thanks fella 🙂👍. Think they've a load more rain due up there as well. It's definitely put some down lately in that area. Looking forward to some crisp cold weather although I don't mind anything. Always fantastic to be out in the Great Outdoors isn't it 🙂 Cheers Andy, thanks mate Atb Rick n Billydog
@@RickTOutdoorAdventure1969 I'm always watching the videos and love the "take along" lots of places I'll probably not get the chance to visit and when you share the knowledge as you do it's always a learning! I'll look forward to round 2! All the best A
Pecking your own head - love it. Best to run away and live to fight another day. Still 25 degrees here at the end of October, but the UK has had one sh*t storm after another it seems. Can you seam seal the Vango or is it a gonner?
Not sure about the seam seal Robert, but I'll try it. I've had it a long time that tent, so shame to scrap it. Aye we've had some wet weather for sure. My lads back up there with his jayak now, making the most of the high flows. Cheers Robert 👍, atb mate, Rick n Billydog
@@RickTOutdoorAdventure1969 Always good to try. Give VANGO a tinkle and tell them you're an influencer with 5k Subs. and that helping you out will do wonders for their integrity and marketing.
Live to paddle another day! Was the right decision Rick, even if it feels crap in the moment. You weren’t joking about it needing constant attention either, deffo no gentle meander down 😂 still looks a good paddle.
Oh aye John, it's an ace paddle. Catch it between 0.6 and 0.8 and it's bang on for the open canoe. Pretty spicy at the 0.8 end of the scale but pretty perfect. I'll be going back at some stage if ya fancy it mate 👍. Cheers John Atb Rick n Billydog
