Hey besties!
I feel like I keep apologizing for going MIA but honestly at this point al I can say is LIFE...it's been a rollercoaster ride with meetings, packing, cleaning and me doing none of that and worryingyself into a panic attack because I know I should be doing it lmao.
Antywayyy lol.... This weeks video was brought together mainly because this period feels like a very reflective one. So many things are happening as my life is literally being uprooted and I just really wanted to focus on some of the positive things living in Japan has taught me even if learning the lesson was tough as hell.
As I said in the beginning of the video this is not a Japan bash video more of a 'wow yah girl has really grown up from the naive 20 year old who moved to Japan four years ago' video yah feel me?
Thus, I hope y'all will enjoy this little video or whatever lol!
XOXO

I think I was more sensitive before going to Japan--sensitive in a bad way. Sometimes I'd be sitting in the office at school and I KNEW the staff was talking about me. But I eventually decided, "Hey, just because they're talking about me it doesn't mean they're saying anything bad." If you speak Japanese, it def helps. They'd try to be cagey by saying, "that person" or "that teacher," but still, I *knew!* Like one day, someone said (in Japanese of course), "I wonder where she goes during her break?" Well, I walk a couple of rice fields over to 7-11 to buy a diet coke, do you find that interesting?

Two things I missed most in Japan: 1. Going on those Florida vacations in summer, or even just going to the pool in my town. 2. Driving through Taco-Bell. Japanese people do NOT like Mexican food (and Taco Bell is not even the real thing, I know that). Whenever you do come across some Mexican food in Japan it's too expensive and/or weirdly wrong--like in Gifu there was this place where we ordered nachos and the chips were Doritos, lol! The selling point of Mexican food is that it's cheap and you get A LOT! Most apartment complexes in the US have a pool, but in Japan, nooo. Women do not lie in the sun, as you mentioned. Avoiding sun damage I understand, but some ladies try to somehow lighten their skin...it's so weird. Why they're not satisfied with the natural color of their skin is just so...wrong.

I was in Japan a few times completely alone, but when I came back I was here to meet my now husband, so I'm only lonely when he's working even though he works from home 😂 I don't miss a whole lot from Canada, someone's I miss food and coffee from Tim Hortons but I am getting the beans shipped to me. What I found tough was mainly reading the air and being a tattooed woman and having to hide them if I am looking for work. Which I'm not doing right now as I'm going to do language school online free from the government that's available for long term residents, spouse to a national (me) and permanent residency. So I'll focus on learning to speak so I can get a apprenticeship at tattoo shop so I can become a tattoo artist and I'll never have to hide my tattoos.

This was well done and informative. I do miss Ja too even more so since the pandemic and not being able to travel. I cook my own Jamaican food here but sometimes I crave a cook shop box food, fry chicken with curry gravy and a fruit punch. A lot of things annoy me about my own culture I.e bad customer service, ppl always being late, dirty places and lack of opportunities but I realized here how much I love my Jamaican culture and wouldn't trade it for another. All love Tomi❤️

You remind me of myself in my early twenties. Had fun getting your perspective. Keep on going with your journey wherever it takes you. Lesson learn(ing) (cuz frankly I still have a ways to go) is PATIENCE! I am so bad and impatient and sometimes thing work out, or come to you when you are patient. Sometimes karma kicks in and you need not intervene. It's hard, but I am trying.

15:52 they say solo travel is really good for you! I wanna travel someday but I don't have any friends to travel with and I know I probably won't so I'll have to go alone which will teach me some of the tough lessons you mentioned in this video. You seem pretty extroverted though so maybe you had an easier time making friends/connections (I'm introverted but I make connections fairly easily, I'd say. As long as there's chemistry and some common interest) Did you always ask strangers to take pics for you?

13:37 I know that feeling of being different all to well. See I'm half Austrian half Filipina and I lived all my life in Austria (except the times when we went on hol's). But since I take after my mother in appearance I was always the odd one in my class. Most of the time I was the only (half) Asian in the classroom. Same goes for, when we're visiting the Philippines. Seeing that I'm a bit lighter in skin colour I've been getting treated differently. But still I'm the odd one - no matter if in Austria or Philippines. And honestly? I love it ❤ - sure at times it's annoying 🙄 (Covid-19, racism, getting ignored for no reason, ...)but I always was and am proud to be Asian. No matter what. ✌🏾😄

Tough lesson I've learned...WELL..Still learning... Is not to let ignorant people ruin my day, week or life. I've had people ran from me, to calling me the "N" word. It would really rock my soul to the point of crying but I'm learning not to let people's ignorance spoil my day. Additional, if I can take such an experience and make it into a teaching moment I will. For example, I did so with one of my student once who thought it was okay to call me the "N word". I thought him about the origin and meaning of the word etc. What I miss about Jamaica? The food... I be wanting to eat things I wouldn't crave for in Ja. One such is "bulla and pear". But you can never get me to have the cravings for bammy. LoL. Give me everything else. I'd do well with some turkey neck yah now.

I’m currently in the interview process for a job in Japan. I find out in a couple weeks if I got the job… I’m white, but one of my biggest insecurities is that I’m overweight. I’ve needed to lose weight for a long time and have struggled for years, and I’ve been telling myself that I need to lose as much weight as possible before moving to Japan (if I do get the job). I know I won’t be able to find clothes there (I currently wear US size large/xl in tops and 16-18 in jeans) but what scares me more is being stigmatized or stared at due to my size 😢
@GirlyEnglishGamer
@GirlyEnglishGamer 6 месяцев назад
Hello so how did it go?
@EricaInTokyo
@EricaInTokyo 6 месяцев назад
@@GirlyEnglishGamer I moved to Tokyo at the end of October and I’ve lost a little over 20 pounds. I still feel absolutely massive every day and everywhere I go. There are so many tiny, tiny bars and restaurants where I feel like I don’t fit, the aisles in stores are so much smaller, everything is smaller. I’m vegan so it’s a little harder to go out and eat without planning on where to go ahead of time, so I’ve been able to avoid eating a lot of the unhealthy fried Japanese foods and junk food. I’ve been to a couple of stores to look for clothes but most items were too small. I’ve ordered some clothes online. I really hate my size and it makes me embarrassed to try to put myself out there and make friends. The funny thing is, obese Japanese people do exist. I see a few obese men and women every day, it’s just that the average woman is so, so tiny (if they lived in the US people would constantly assume they were anorexic)
@EricaInTokyo
@EricaInTokyo 6 месяцев назад
@@GirlyEnglishGamer that being said, I don’t think Japanese people really care or at least no one has said anything that I would understand (I don’t speak Japanese). I might get a pass because I’m foreign 🤷‍♀️ I also have a lot of tattoos, so when people stare I don’t know if it’s because I’m blonde, not Japanese, fat, heavily tattooed… or what.
