#WritingLife How to hone your instincts, trust your gut and back yourself.
We all have that moment of cold dread that we’ve picked a dream we can’t turn into a reality, and it’s those moment we need to remember why we started. Find that self belief that set you on this journey and carry on.
You got into this game because it was something you believed in. Believed that it was something you could do. Then you started listening and reading. Trying to understand about this business you want to succeed at.
Doubts are the biggest creativity and success blocker. But it takes a strong person not to have them.
No one said this was going to be easy, or everyone would be doing it. If you ask those that succeed in this business they will all tell you they’ve had knock backs. It’s about perseverance. It’s about holding on to your self belief and forging ahead.
“Don’t give up on your dreams, or your dreams will give up on you.” - John Wooden.

I am like Wendy. My mantra, when feeling self doubt, is 'why NOT me.' Every best seller started out unknown, just like me. If they can do it, so can I. We are no different. I know if I keep going, I will succeed eventually, one way or another. That might not always be true, but it works for me 😂

Awesome podcast. It is human nature to question all things. It’s also natural to have a certain degree of self-doubt. We can get into a mental and emotional tailspin when we combine and amplify these together. When this happens to me I have to choose to shut out the thoughts or actions that threaten my goal/dream/vision. I don’t feel this is living in denial but rather a conscious choice to focus on what is best for reaching my desired outcome. Mindset is extremely important so I try to set it on the positive.

I’ve never had a problem in my 14 years of being a writer, until recently. I was not only struggling with writing but also with all the chatter around me. So, I had to step back from the biggest chatters….Facebook, and remind myself that I write first for me and I don’t need to do what everyone else is doing. I’ve already seen an improvement.

The chatter can be so loud Teresa, I know exactly what you mean. So glad you've found a way to tune that out somewhat - it's a real skill to have (and one I'm still working on!) ~ Shar

I was raised by parents who always told me, “if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all!” I was raised in an era where we would never speak ill of someone, especially to their face. But today, with a different generation, where kindness and compassion, empathy and respect are not the norm, it’s important to love yourself, respect your process…if it takes one writer 10 years to write, then that’s their process and they are in charge. If it takes another only 10 months, that’s their process. If we met these two writers at a bookstore, coffee shop , etc , I’m pretty sure the first thing we would ask them is what their book was about and not question why it took them so long to write. Once, a friend of mine asked me if my book was published. I said not yet. He then proceeded to tell me I was not a writer/author, that only those whose books are published are writers/authors 😳😵‍💫🤦🏼‍♀️ Soooooo I asked him if his band had made any recordings lately and he said, “not in 20 years”, and so I said, “well then I guess you’re not really a musician.” Silence. “Huh. I see your point”, he replied. “We’re done here….next!” I told him Then I changed the subject . So frustrating.
