Thank you Janet for giving up the best years for us. Thank all the other veterans of WW2 too. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to you all. Looking at the country today was it worth it. I hope your efforts weren't in vain.
A remarkable woman - and looking amazing for 98 years’ old (at the time of filming) - I hope you are still going strong, Janet - and thank you for all you did.
Well done Janet! My Mum was young and worked in the forest doing logging. Also she was in a factory. She was my hero when I grew older and found this out. I was born after the war ended I still remember the rebuilding from the destruction from bombs in Glasgow. Wonderful for the University to acknowledge the sacrifice.
Brought a tear to my eye. We went to pick mums oldest sister up from work in the 70's. It was a Manchester fire extinguisher factory and she was a lathe operator. I never found out what sort of job she did during the war. Maybe it was that same factory.
This is such a lovely series. I just discovered it. It's fascinating listening to people like Janet, who had no choice but to face the wartime at a very young age.
Enjoyed listening to her story, it would be tough working 7 days a week, but long hrs & steady days were common due to the shortage of workers available due to the enlistment of men & women.
My reading of it or rather on listening to it was that it was the fact of no acknowledgement of her work. Yes it would have happened to millions of others but the lack of recognition rather than lack money would have been a large factor.. Of course there would always have been someone else who was worse off or had worse experiences but as was said many times 'there's a war on' different times!
Nonsense. These women had been working and earning a living, the money they earned would have paid for food, accommodation, clothing etc. Suddenly they were thrust out into the world with no extra money to assist them in the transition back to civvie life.
Viewing on my mobile phone. Despite great content and presentation I wont subscribe because you exclude me as an older viewer by using that small font. I can't read it. Its just that wee bit to small to read . Very annoying.
It's not worth reading anyway. It's just the automatic Google subtitles that are "word salad". No-one has put any effort into editing the script to ensure it makes sense.
