iirc a lot of Sanae's VS Mode comments are basically making fun of his own artwork. She comments about getting yachie's tail out of her face and if those sticks are fries and so on.
Feels like you got pretty lucky with your ability cards here. Tsukasa, Ran, and Biten all gave you extra shots to help compensate for Sanae's piddly damage.

If i had a nickle for every time the main antagonist of a touhou game told the main protagonists that the incident will solve itself and to go home I'd have three nickles. which isn't a lot but its funny that it happened thrice
The amusing part of Ran throwing Chen at you is that higher Boss Attack levels has her summoning 2 Chens to throw at you. Also, ZUN kiiinda fumbled the code on Tsukasa's boss spell, the lasers are supposed to rebound iirc, but they don't. As for Sanae as a playable character, I like her, but she has to play defensive a lot. The delay is a real killer on her aura, but her lv2 is fairly good screen-clearer and I usually used it right up the boss' face, to get some free damage going before I have to spam lv3 to keep my barrier up because I can't kill shit. Sanae has a very interesting playstyle with a difficult to use toolkit, but she's particularly deadly in PvP if she's allowed to snowball the match into a frenzy... if it weren't for her lasers never hitting the top of the screen. You're forced to try to make your opponent move out of the top of the screen with her C4 boss, but that's limited in effectiveness. In Story Mode, however, the AI is surprisingly stupid and will only really react to bullets right around them - this includes the otherwise very predictable lasers from her C3! That means that the AI will often hilariously attempt to dodge laterally to avoid the laser... and end up getting caught against the edge of the screen in its path. Oops. Sanae spamming C3 against Zanmu to go for the kill is currently thought to be the most effective method to get her LNN.

Something regarding Tsukasa's spellcard... Apparently it's bugged XD The lasers are supposed to bounce once, but I forget what exactly in the code is messy and doesn't let that happen. And if you struggle with Sanae now.... Oh boy, am I not looking forward to other characters...
Sanae is a shot for sure. Her damage output from her base shot is pitiful, though not as pitiful as a certain cat and mouse later on. Her one saving grace is having a level 2 that clears the screen and is surprisingly strong when used point-blank against bosses. Side note, Mamizou's card that clears bullets when your shield breaks is an excellent card. That card has saved me multiple times. Also, fun fact, Sanae's level 3 can actually kill Zanmu before her final. Y'know, between Marisa's relationship with Saki , the interesting backstory for Ran we get in the next route, and Yachie being surprised Sanae doesn't remember her despite Sanae not featuring in 17 or 17.5, I'm a little surprised there's not something more going on between Sanae and Yachie.
Snae gameplay at it's finest. P A I N ala moriya I think tsukasa easily become the most kickable touhou character alongside seiga, mamizou and the im-not-mima girl from cheating detective satori.
One of my favorite small bits is how offended Yachie gets when Sanae doesn't recognize her. It's almost like "Oh, you don't remember me? I'll fix that for you!"

Frankly, I dunno how Sanae is played optimally, I'm not the best person to ask here. I just know her level 2 is a good screen cleaner and her scope is helpful to hold down with its range. Her level 3 is good at tricking the AI though, I suppose. Also she's got wings now. If I remember correctly, it was to keep in track with the animal theming, so I guess they're like bird wings. God she just like me fr Tsukasa's spell card is actually bugged, the lasers are meant to bounce off the walls, but they gain the bounce property as they're fired, for some reason. Ran's Ability Cards are interesting, in that, and I'm getting ahead of myself here, being an extension of her option shots, they stay in place when you focus. And her cards are just a horizontally-firing one and a vertically-firing one (the one in this video), so they always provide good utility. However, it might seem counter-intuitive, but the horizontal one is actually better, since it fires two shots instead of one. As long as you focus to keep the option on a boss, they deal some good damage. Mamizou's Extra attacks are funny because her bird bullets have always been red, but they swapped to blue here just for the Eagle Spirit lookalike. Not only does Yachie's portrait get her tail in everyone's faces, but also her eyes are yellow instead of red now... Also her pointing really looks like something straight out of a clickbait thumbnail. Oh boy, this Yachie fight was chaos. I don't think it's been explained by anyone yet, but bursting a ton of spirits in a short time frame also automatically sends an Extra Attack to your opponent, and if there's enough of a chain, there can be an automatic Boss Attack too. This stuff gets really chaotic on Lunatic and I honestly kind of love it. Yachie even lost a life just here on Normal. (And used up some bombs, which, as you may notice, are just the shape of that character's scope.) Getting the feeling y'all just didn't make a Goku joke out of Biten just because it was too insanely obvious. Also as for why her outfit resembles Nemuno's, it's simply because her profile says that the Forest Sanctuary belonged to the yamanba, so she probably lived among them. As for her design... Ehhh, I dunno, it really is one of those cases where I barely care for it, but it looks slightly better in fanart, I suppose. 27:13 poor chicken 😔 Oh boy, as for next time... Pain
Not true. Tsukasa is actually really strong in offense with her C3 spam actually making her kit really good especially combined with the boss. Her scope is weak defensively, but strong in offense because you can milk easily. her C2 is really strong as it clears out pellets and makes them impossible to be transferred to your side. Tsukasa is a strong high mid character and is believed among the PvP community as the most underrated character in the game

I wasn't fully aware of this game's story when it came out, but it's interesting how it's basically Touhou's version of a "Dragonbreak" story wherein literally everything that happens from all characters' sides is canonical- and it's the Phantasmagoria VS Mode style gameplay that makes that possible in the first place. I only just noticed that even the dialogues are repeated.

You can actually kill Zanmu early with Sanae by spamming her C3 since AI isn't good at dodging her EX, which is a reason why Sanae is one of the easier shots for LNNs in this game. The same concept of killing AI early can be said for Biten, Chiyari and other characters like Orin, Tsukasa, Mamizou and Enoko but they are much harder to accomplish because you can't just spam C3 you need to have certain techniques

Bit of luck cause it's exactly as you said, I got _really_ lucky with the cards. Tsukasa, Ran & Biten all have a 50/50 chance of giving you a useful offensive card, or a useless one. Both Tsukasa & Ran's cards are 50/50 on if you get a card that fires vertically or horizontally, while Biten's two cards are either shooting poles forward, or being able to safely pass through otter spirits. And I ended up winning the coinflip on all three of them, greatly helping make up the difference in the piddly shot power Sanae has that I mentioned before.
