Well... did you ever read the original story? Alice here, I think, was based off that Alice's psyche. Meaning, in her mind, she's probably quite depressed and perhaps a bit psychotic. A human being raised by youkai may do that though...

Except for the mushroom that turns Alice big. It's based on an actual mushroom that, once consumed, makes you hallucinate and feel as if you're growing bigger. The Super Mushroom from the Mario series is based off of the same mushroom.

The original story wasn't about drugs... The whole LSD thing is bullshit. Do you know the author ? Charles Dodgson ? (Lewis Carrol was a fake name) Well he was a conservative mathematician. The book is about symbolic logic and how it makes no sense. He hated symbolic logic because he was a "pure" mathematician. That's why things shrink and grow and the quote "everything would be what it isn't" is about how things are represented in symbolic maths.
