Elephanta Island is a UNESCO World Heritage site.The island is famous for Elephanta Caves.It was curved out of solid bed rock during 6th to 8th century at time of regin of Rashtrakuta kings.
The name of the island is Gharapuri as called by locals, but during the 15 th century the Portuguese captured it and gave the name Elephanta Island after seeing the elephant sclupture in the island since they don't know the name of the island.
