Tour of Jim's Catalina 22 "Bootstrap" with some ideas on how to rig the boat for single handing. Now that i have a better microphone I should probably re-shoot this, but for now you can get some good ideas.

Love these little boats! Mine is a 1972. she's got her little quarks that I'm still working on but has a personality that none of the newer boats can match. She turns 50 next year and we're planning a San Juan Islands cruise to celebrate 🍾

I liked it from the first sail and like it more all the time. My last 21-footer was a San Juan 21. I loved that 1200 lb boat with it's 400 lb lead keel. It could outsail the Catalina, but I had a feeling that the Catalina would age better. And it has.

I have a 1997 Capri, my fuel locker is sealed off, my traveler is in the way in the cockpit, yet it works very well, and my scuppers are fantastic, I did have a heck of a time finding replacements though.

Nice tour! I love my 1974 C22, and have been a self taught sailor for 3years now. To my benefit, I did do some rc sailboating when I was young, and crewed a couple of boats with great captains. The C22 is such a wonderful, forgiving boat, that even I can fumble around my lake with success.

I don't have a Catalina 22, but I'm interested on the stern light installation, specially the mounting bracket. I was going to fabricate a similar, but if one exist as aftermarket, why reinvent the wheel? The Catalina 22 still survives in the Capri model. Not many products today still in production 40 or 50 years later, and parts availability. Thanks for a great video, and a great project boat.

Don't know if you found a stern light, but Amazon has a bunch of them and LED lights are definitely the way to go, cuts power usage WAY down.

just ran across this video. I have a san juan 21 and looking to switch up to a catalina 22. I need something that more stable at anchor. my sj is like a bucking bronco when at anchor overnight in semi rough weather. hoping the increase weight and less racy design will sit better in rough seas. but boy does my sj 21 point well...
@jimslittleboat4388
@jimslittleboat4388 Год назад
The SJ will certainly outsail the C22, but if you get a Rudder craft rudder the performance will improve dramatically. While the C22 is small it seems roomy and luxurious compared to the SJ. I loved the SJ 21, but the C22 is pretty a pretty good compromise between peformance and boat camping convenience.

I think I picked up the clamps at West Marine or Boat Outfitters. But , they are kind of common if you can find a boat store. You could also try Fisheries Supply in Seattle, WA--they have a huge stock of all kinds of useful stuff. The clamps are not cheap. I think they were like $45 for a pair.

I should not do it, but I put it on the boat. I leave it straight up. I should put it in the truck, but it's heavy and we only have a short trip to the marina on pretty smooth road.

I m currently looking at purchasing a 1977 C22. Is their anything to look out for in that year of boat?
@jimslittleboat4388
@jimslittleboat4388 4 года назад
When I was thinking about buying my Catalina 22 I joined the owner's association. They have a lot of great information in their tech manual and buyer's guide. I looked at a lot of boats. In the end I selected the one with a sound deck and a keel that had been re-done. A well-cared-for boat at $5000 might be a lot cheaper than a TLC* boat $3500. Also remember that much of the value is in the sails--a complete suit could cost $3000. Also--what is the condition of the trailer? A galvanized trailer in great shape adds a lot of value to the boat. A friend of mine suggested that a great lakes boat could be a good deal. Only in fresh water, only 6 months of the year. Above all, don't be afraid to walk away from a deal; there are lots of good boats out there that have a lot of value left in them.

There are many fine old boats out there. I selected the Catalina because of parts availability and support services. I really liked my old San Juan 21--it is a much snappier sailing boat--but the Catalina has many advantages that suit my age and current goals.

@@jimslittleboat4388 I think the mast is heavier on my A23, need a gin pole to get it up. The one thing I do not like about it. Maybe I am too weak, I watched a video of an A23 rigging, the gentleman just pulled it up, seemed quite easy for him on the video.

@jimslittleboat4388
@jimslittleboat4388 3 года назад
Mine could use paint. Some previous owner painted the deck/cockpit and did a lousy job. But paint is very time consuming and expensive. I am thinking it is about a 160-hour job. Fortunately I don't have a big, dry, warm space or I would do it. I am not willing to give up even a minute of sailing do do painting so summer is out of the question.

Why does the Rudder Craft rudder make such a big difference?
@jimslittleboat4388
@jimslittleboat4388 3 года назад
I don't know the physics of it, but I know the feel of it. I knew it was a thousand well spent the first moment we backed out of the slip. It is more balanced. The rubber pivot is more toward the center of the blade than the leading edge. It is a foil shape so it tends to give hydrodynamic lift like a wing in air. It is lighter weight. When sailing you have far less weather helm and the boat seldom rounds up during a gust. It will improve the performance of your boat more than any other single thing you can do. Yes, the brazing on mine sucked--but they made it good in 36 hours.

Automotive wiring replaced with.....automotive wiring. Spade terminals, no heat shrink, no solder, no drip loops, no bundling. This is why boat fires happen. I had to replace every piece of wiring on my boat. Nothing peeves me off more than having to fix another mans work. Do it right the first time and then you don’t have to hope that fire extinguisher expiration date hasn’t lapsed.
