Here's a tour of two sets of tunes of tunes. I made it for folks sitting IN a session. Though it also might be of interest to non-players who enjoy listening and observing (I made a video about listeners here: • (Tour) Guided Session ... )
We played these tunesat a recent Medford Brewing Company session. I break down just a few of the events, to help folks build a mini vocabulary of strategies for session playing. Or to amuse!
We played:
1) The Killavil Jig, O'Brien's Trip to Newtown (AKA Seamus Connolly's), Will You Come Home with Me
2) Love at the Endings, Road to Garrison (AKA The Godfather)

Learning tin whistle and flute. My dream: fly to Ireland one day and join a session. My story is one day I flew with my friends from Poland (where I live) to Dave Matthews Band concert in Dublin. The day after we went for some sightseeing along the coast. We were in an empty car of a train when the train broke. The car wasn't empty after all and some older guy just took out a tin whistle and started to play. Pretty magical. I was already a fan of traditional music (mostly scandinavian) so my brain was already trained to enjoy it even if I didn't know Irish tradition or the tunes. I think it started a seed that grew over the years until I decided learn to play myself.

This is an awesome story, Leonard. What a cool way to get the Irish music bug--I am glad your train broke down! And your dream feels VERY reachable. Wishing you luck and enjoyment on your Irish music journey. And when you get to Ireland for those first sessions, it's okay to not know all/many/most of the tunes. Just being a part of it and listening is great, too. And from there you'll learn more and more. Little by little the bird makes its nest.

I loved listening to this Shannon. I’ve been to many hundreds of sessions - maybe thousands both in the U.K. and in Ireland and love the fact that they can vary so hugely! My main regular weekly session at The Stag in Hastings U.K. is vastly different every single time depending on who comes. Often folk turn up from far afield (other countries too) as they’re travelling through and have heard there’s a regular session here. Periodically we’ve had strong leaders and at other times it’s chaotic and wild with no leaders at all! I love the variations! Last Tuesday a fellow turned up from Belfast, borrowed someone’s fiddle and more or less led the session as everyone was being so genuinely welcoming. Others chipped in with suggestions or just started a tune and let a set randomly evolve. Like you I love the really neat (big bang) changes when they happen and the subtle eye signals but I also love the gradual joining in and sussing out of the tune the first time around. There’s a whole universe in Irish music sessions that it would take many lifetimes to explore- and also a great way (for me) to learn how to integrate in human culture! I’m such a natural recluse!!! Lots of love to you both ❤️❤️

I just love the way you describe some of the different scenarios. And how you appreciate the variety. YES, this one tiny snapshot was meant as a jumping off point: just one way that things can go down. Thank you for adding to the conversation, Jenny!

2nd subscriber/fan like; 10th view. What do you do when you start a tune a one pace, and others joining in - speed up and run away with it?! (Can you say 'AARRGGHH!!'). This session sounds really good & solid; it certainly helps to have a group of good players.
@ShannonHeatonMusic

THANK you for this question, Peter. Yeah... Like, what would you do if you were out walking in the world and people started rushing by you, pushing you over, pulling you? Obviously weird, right? But in a session that can happen. And it feels a bit sad. And I think you really can say ARRRGHH! That said, if you were sitting in a session that had established a particular pace, and then YOU started a tune much, much slower than people had been playing, that might be a little less conversational (though variety can be nice).

Thanks so much for these thoughts. I think, it‘s always a good idea to shout out the key of the next tune to the accompanist, which makes a smoother change. Otherwise the melody player plays solo, and the set loses a lot of it‘s strength. Now my question: some players start playing as soon as they recognize the next tune, which I think destroys the feeling, especially when they play very loud (pipes😉) I think it would be more musically if players would wait until the second A-part of the tune and start to play then. What are your thoughts on this topic?
@ShannonHeatonMusic
@ShannonHeatonMusic 10 месяцев назад
That's an interesting thought--to wait and let the statement of the tune breathe, and come in cleanly on the second time around. There's definitely an energy that comes from people grabbing the tune right away (even if it's a little jagged). But there's also real power in coordinating. I like it.

Thank you Shannon , that was wonderful. We definitely have timing issues at our sessions. But ive discovered that its either nerves or for some an issue of deafness ! Also if the craic is mighty some also get carried away. Slainte .
@ShannonHeatonMusic
@ShannonHeatonMusic 11 месяцев назад
That's very big-hearted of you, Maria, to realize that some of the erratic playing comes from nervousness (because people CARE, and want to get it right), excitement, or even deafness. That's inspiring to me. I'll bet it'd make it easier to endure the raggedy moments... and I wonder if compassion and patience sets you up to lock in, just a bit better than feeling annoyed...

but @@ShannonHeatonMusic, we who are prone to nerves carrying us away can make sure to practice with a metronome!! Or use the great guitar app tool "Strum Machine" to practice with a steady "guitar" player at home.

Good one, Ellery! Also, playing along with strong, steady players online (like Ellery!)... and imagining how in can feel when you get together in person... is a way of developing an unwavering inner pulse.@@elleryklein-fiddler9330

Hi Shannon in the sessions local to me somebody starts a tune set then we play each tune three times through and carry on like that until the set leader either gets fed up or runs temporarily out of inspiration
@ShannonHeatonMusic
@ShannonHeatonMusic 11 месяцев назад
Thanks for connecting, Garry. Yep, we all have our different customs, and I hope it is fun and comforting for you to know what to expect at your local session. I do tire of the 'only three times' convention; and I can also find it exhausting to have tune, after tune, after tune. But if inspiration and musical connection is high, a big ole set with fewer repetitions could be fun. Especially if there's craic between the sets!

Also noticed some people, sitting out, listening carefully, and then trying to play the tune. They did not play loud enough to bother anyone it seems.

ExACtly! I love sitting in a session and listening.. it's exciting when a tune comes up I don't know. And I usually learn best by listening for a while.

We would end a tune, and someone would be inspired and start the next at the same tempo. Sort of a 'leader-less' approach. What are your thoughts on that?
@ShannonHeatonMusic
@ShannonHeatonMusic 11 месяцев назад
Good one -- every session works differently. The fact that your gang is tapped into the same pace together (probably not just musically) makes it work. It can be less fun when it's a festival of different tempos and approaches.... If there's a set of tunes, some conversation, then another set of tunes that flows from the music and conversation so far, it hardly matters who or how that happens, right?
@douglascole5729
@douglascole5729 11 месяцев назад
Yea, it is easier with old friends. And it does not matter if we are talking or playing. It's all the same. @@ShannonHeatonMusic
