Hey Stef - safety note: watching you install the cowl plugs in the nose: if you stick them in the way you did, with the cord which connects them BEHIND the propeller, and you forget to remove them before you start the engine, they’ll block airflow into the cowl and the engine will overheat VERY quickly, potentially causing a safety of flight issue. If you install them with the cord which connects them together IN FRONT of the propeller, and you forget to remove them before you start the engine, the propeller blades will yank them out and throw them clear while you’re cranking, which will embarrass you as soon as you notice but will also eliminate the risk of engine failure and forced landing due to overheating. Easy habit to form, and much safer!

No drysuit? cheap improvised immersion suit. if water is cold, could be handy. Australia is somewhat warm but water south west of tasmania can get to 10 degrees in which you last an hour before death. Water has to be pretty tropical to survive anything but an immediate rescue. David Lesh who may have ditched his plane on purpose in california in the summer was only in the water for 30 minutes before rescue and he was close to hypothermia. So any actual cold water is a death sentence. Quick google suggests weight around 2kg, maybe 500 aus new. maybe find a used one for 200.

Hello, thank you for your video, do you fly Best power or best economy and how do you choose between both options? What is your average fuel consumption? You didn't talk about the parachute is there a specific procedure to use it?
@StefanDrury
@StefanDrury Год назад
Good questions Rémy, I fly power and economy depending on the flight. There are different opinions but myself and my engineering team agree it's best not to fly lean of peak (economy, around 11-12gph) all the time. So I make sure to vary it and fly some legs rich of peak (power 15-17gph) as well. But for longer flights when fuel quantity is a consideration, I will fly lean of peak to stretch out as much range as possible. And re the parachute, I made a video practising emergencies in the sim which you can see here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-L3M8Aa71WqE.html

Just out of curiosity. The SR22 is a really nice aircraft, but it has an insane fuel consumption. Any thoughts on selling EYZ and getting a more fuel efficient machine? The advantage is also that when you make your trip around the world it can be tricky to get hold of Avgas, a used DA40 (DA50 if you can afford it...) with JET A1 is easyier to get hold of, or a Sling TSI (or similar) which takes normal car gas. I know you already have it figured out. But do you have any thoughts about this?
@alphaadhito
@alphaadhito Год назад
Sling TSi was the thing come to my mind when it comes to efficiency. Can drink regular high octane mogas, decent room (actually quite bigger than a Cessna 172), tubocharged engine and also have optional balistic parachute if you desire. Well, literally a budget SR-22 😅
@julianturecek2373
@julianturecek2373 Год назад
I fly a SR22 and I think the fuel consumption is pretty good when leaned to Best Economy (12-13gph or ~50l/h) at 165kt.
@Maviation
@Maviation Год назад
@@julianturecek2373 so how about getting 100LL? We dont have fancy planes like the cirrus at my club.. just ordinary pipers and cessnas that we fuel using 91/96 Mogas because 100ll is hard to get by and expensive
@StefanDrury
@StefanDrury Год назад
Like most things it's a pay off. Yes I have higher fuel consumption in the SR22, but I have a bigger total fuel capacity and often have a faster cruise speed. Lean of peak I can burn around 11gph and get a cruise TAS of around 155kts. With a 92G tank this can give me 5-6 hours of flying. Every aircraft has pros and cons, but for me and with the flying I do right now, this is the best aircraft for my needs. But AvGas availability is definitely a consideration for international flying.

You created weak spots on the wing, just to mount a camera? The drag is small but not balanced across the entire wing span. A internal cabin mounted camera would still be able to record take offs and landings. Appallingly trivial modification - very disappointed at the moment. I know that if I was buying this aircraft I would request a significant discount to cover the costs of hiring a qualified aeronautical structural engineer to determine any safety issues with this ridiculous wing modification
@Matthew_M11
@Matthew_M11 Год назад
Having the wing camera mount is critical for his intention with this aircraft, though. It's for leisure and content making and having exterior footage is important for that. If you are going to go to this extent and make monetized RU-vid content with your own aircraft, you may as well have it there.
@thedave7760

LOL. So someone somewhere doing something you don't agree with to an aircraft that you will never see be in or ever get the chance to buy leads to you being disappointed, wow, just wow. How arrogant/ignorant do you have to be to make such a statement. Steff doesn't just go around drilling holes in his baby willy nilly he would have consulted engineers beforehand and if I am right I think you will find the holes he used were preexisting from the factory. "Ridiculous wing modification" indeed... Why don't you go consult your qualified aeronautical structural engineer and tell us how much of a discount Steff should give when he sells.
@eugene4981
@eugene4981 Год назад
How has it created a weak spot? It has an engineering order certifying it’s use and it’s screwed in to the existing holes. It’s made of steel so a longer bolt to compensate for the thickness of the bracket and it anything, given the spread of the bracket clamping down it’s probably increased the integrity of the tip fairing being bolted to the wing…..
