I turned my daughter's abandoned tree fort into a chicken coop, enclosed using 2x4's and hardware cloth! The coop uses a 2x6 roosting bar, with a dropping tray below filled with Sweet PDZ Stall Refresh to control waste odor. Controlling the night time waste effectively is the key to managing odor.
Hardware cloth: amzn.to/3sKZfis
Sweet PDZ Stall Refresh: amzn.to/3G0T7bc (will be cheaper at your local feed store)

That was a fantastic showcase of your coop and I am shocked that this doesn't have gagillions of views. Great laughs as well 😂

Well thought-out and executed. It's nice to see a success story that did not require huge (and costly) construction. Thank you for sharing your work.

The cost is insane for this kind of animal.

@Bidenisasnake If 2022 taught me only one thing, it's that cost and value are both more significant than I ever thought. They don't seem to match anymore. We're now forced to decide what we value, then evaluate/manipulate the expenses involved. Security is evermore expensive, putting it mildly.

Finally!!!! I’ve looked everywhere trying to see if doing something like this would work but everyone still had a coop inside or next to versus it being all in one. Thank you for sharing!

I currently have two gateway chickens in the tiny coop you showed. I have two additional chickens coming in the next two weeks and we are about to convert an old metal shed we weren't using into an open air coop. (Open on two sides but also leaving two for a windbreak.) I was curious if I had to build an additional coop *inside the coop* for them to go into at night to roost. I really appreciated this video. Not only the information, but it was super helpful the way you showed everything, explained everything, and your intelligence and personality make you so relatable. Awesome. Thanks!

Great content- I'm trying to do the same with a Producers Pride Universal Chicken Run as the main coop area. So far so good, but I am always looking for more ideas. Thanks for sharing.

Your coop is similar to mine. The two sides both have plastic tarps (I think from signage tarps) that I can push down and pull up when it rains. There are poly ropes that hold the tarps in place. I put kitty litter boxes on the floor and they like those for laying. My coop is only about 5x8, but works well enough. I set up several easy-ups outside, with 100' of moveable electric fencing all around. I like the idea of putting those poop catching board under their roosting bars.

Ok now I know how I'm going to make my coup. I'm in fl so more heat than cold. Great ideas on the chicken droppings. I might just close in 3 sides where they sleep, gets a little windy sometimes.😁 Great coup thanks for all the great ideas. Have a great day 🌞

I'm in the panhandle of Fl. and I have an 3 sided open air coop as well 8x 8 coop 8x24 run all covered 8x32 total, but my girls and roo sleep out in the run no matter how cold it gets here. Go figure. To deal with the heat I put sun sails up for Shade and keep the free range are wetted down in the summer. This is my first year and have not lost a bird yet. My nesting boxes and free freed tube are in the coop area.

I've done fairly much the same thing. Except one side has a sheet of plywood, about 4' off the ground, to 8', and then one side has 20", so, they have a corner wind break. Honestly, it seemed like they would use it, but they do not, they like the breeze, even at night.

This is what I want to build..but I worry about the 2 months of colder Temps we get in the austin area
@homemadetexas
@homemadetexas Год назад
I am near Austin. Chickens are very cold-hardy. As long as you give them a dry place out of the wind, they will be fine. It's the heat you have to worry about killing them.

@@homemadetexasI’m near Austin, too… Lake Travis / Volente area. This will be our first winter with chickens here. We had a small flock in S. Houston a few years back. It’s my understanding that as long as you give them a well-ventilated place and limit the drafts, chickens handle our kind of cold just fine. Also… ensure access to water that isn’t a block of ice!

What do you do about rain? I’m building a similar setup but am concerned about them getting wet when it rains.

Hi. What about the winter: how do you protet them from the winter cold?
@homemadetexas
@homemadetexas Год назад
Hi there! As I said in the video, I hung tarps on the north and west sides of the coop to form a wind break. Chickens are very cold-hardy animals and can easily withstand cold temperatures as long as you protect them from wind and rain.
@onemoredoll5791
@onemoredoll5791 Год назад
You can use clear roofing vinyl sheets that are grooved for ventilation that keeps coop/run light, protected from wind and rain and a tad warmer. Then take off in spring.

A raccoon could make short work of your lock, i've heard if a 2 yr old could slide the lock so could a coon. My coop could be used as a brinks truck if something gets my girls he's gona have to work at it.

@@737smartin The one titled ...open air chicken coop ? Nightime temperatures can still plummet with a wind behind it Even in arid places like Texas Chickens deserve some protection from that Oh yes I see ...she puts a tarp on the side seasonally ....I must've gone to make a cup of tea previously and missed it
