This mill is open to the public for tours. It is located two miles from my house. This is a great video to teach people how a mill works.

Hi Nancy! I'm glad you liked the video. I looked at previous videos that had been done on it and decided to try a different approach that may keep more peoples attention. I hope it worked. I just looked and over 3,200 hundred people have looked at it since yesterday and I've had people from many countries (I'm viewed in 55 countries) remark on the mill, so I am pleased. The video had 118 comments and 331 likes and a 99.4% like rate, so that's really good. I will probably come over to the Micro Brew Festival if they will let me and film that. That is apparently a big deal. I've never attended it. Thanks for watching and commenting too! Nancy, you have a great week! Best, -Mark

Hey Bob! Glad you enjoyed the video on the mill. I loved doing it. I have a great appreciation of the ways things were done years ago. It's ashamed, but it seems the interest in these type places has diminished as time passes. I guess it's our fast paced life. All my very best, -Mark

Mark, I love that you go around in overalls and flips flops (something I do) and when the guy commented "you wouldn't be doing that in flip flops" I laughed. I've gone out in a foot of snow to feed goats in flip flops before. We have a few mills in Missouri and I've only toured a couple. It is really awesome to be there and hear and feel them running. Plus they are usually surrounded by a very beautiful setting.

Great tour, Mark! Let’s do these field trips more often. You’ve reinvented yourself into the teacher and mentor we needed right about now. You bring alive the things of earth we’ve long forgotten. It’s hard for many to appreciate that this technology was a giant evolutionary step to the more “sexy” devices we carry in our pockets today. Thanks and 🙏 thanks.

I have some field trips already filmed and one having the filming completed this week at a small brewery on a farm near me. That video starts with the hops being cut, through the brewing process and than to the customer. They sell their beer right there on the farm having converted the barn into a great place with tables and room for a band. A really great video. I'm eager to get it posted in the next week. Mark, You excelled on this post. Better than anything I've seen on the BBC here in the UK and they have resources and budget! Did you wonder why most moving equipment and internals were manufactured from wood instead of metal? This is to prevent sparks which could ignite wheat flour which is 35 times more combustible than gunpowder. Good to see USA finally preserving industrial past. I think you'd enjoy the soothing sound of a windmill too. Holgate windmill, York, is a rare survivor of a working mill surrounded by suburban housing in my home city.

You're to kind! I've seen so much excellent filming from the UK. You know, I didn't know that. That totally makes a lot of sense. It just never crossed my mind! I knew flour dust was combustible, but I didn't realize it was that volatile. Thanks for sharing that with me. I appreciate you watching too! Have a great week! All my best, -Mark

This video was so interesting, i love History of farming and how they use to be with the machines they use to use, i went to my grandma's country in Portugal 2017 and my dad would take us to places where they use to farm and the machines they used to use, i love the water well's they have too. Here in Australia we have a farm festival every year where they show all the machines they used to use and they way they farmed way back from 1777 till now and i love it. That machine where it grinds the corn is awesome and so smart they way they made that. Thank you Mark this was a great tour/video of the Grist mill. Best Gabriel

I've never seen a working water mill as nearly all of the ones in my country are gone. Mostly because they were primarily made of wood (including the building). For example I know there used to be at least two water mills my town during 1800s as we have the largest rapids in entire country (though they have been dammed since early 1920s for hydropower). I've visited only a wind mill before but from what I can recall the mechanism is pretty much the same. Anyhow. Thanks for the intteresting video!

@@marksgardenlife5971 Heh, and I'd love to visit the states some day. I have actually never been there which is in a way funny since pretty much all youtubers I follow are from the states. I don't personally view Finland anything special but maybe it's because I live in a small rural town. My guess is that a lot of folks think lapland when they think about Finland. Either that or the capital Helsinki. Personally I prefer the rural areas (which is most of the country) and I sort of enjoy living in the lakeland region. Still, it's pretty much just endless forest dotted with hundreds of small and large lakes, and sleepy small towns with aging population, so for anyone who enjoys, say, cottageering or kayaking or uneventful life it's great. For people looking for action and sights not so much. Especially during winters which are cold and dark.
@marksgardenlife5971
@marksgardenlife5971 3 года назад
I love small rural towns. I think small towns actually show a more realistic, true representation of the native people. The layers that city people add for self protection are not needed in the small rural areas. You are able to see the more "real" of individuals. Hope that makes sense!

Fieldtrip!!! Lol I love a good, working mill. The ingenuity and engineering of them fascinate me. We have several in my area of Missouri. Maryland doesn't seem all that different from Missouri. A bit more Colonial there while French and German style dominate the historic areas of Missouri. I've done a few train trips to the middle and upper East Coast but never got to enjoy the interior of Maryland. Thank you. Always love a good fieldtrip. Have a great day!

@@marksgardenlife5971 , years ago when I was still teaching in our local high school I discovered "music for concentration" and got a BOSE sound system for my classroom and it really helped the kids with ADD and ADHD stay focused.. White noise also helped to sleep at night as it wiped out all of the distractive noises that we all can hear at night staring at the ceiling.

Hi Kenn! Suffering from ADHD for years, I can totally understand that. I sleep with a white noise maker every night and it does help.

Great video, had a great time watching and learning about mills, like super fantastic. Ok so I get the saying grist for the mill… but I heard him call the piece below the hopper a damsel…. So is that where damsel in distress comes from?

Hi Stephen! The Monocacy.... I bet that's a great river to kayak. I haven't done that one yet. Where do you put in/get out? How long of a run? I may give that a try this summer if I get a chance. Thanks for watching/commenting! Stephen, you have a great day! Best, -Mark

Next time I’m putting in at Taneytown Pike and going to sixes bridge rd. I’m trying to finish the northern part of the Monocacy, which is often too shallow to complete. I’ll attach a helpful water level site below:

@@marksgardenlife5971 Sure, I'd watch! I'd especially like to see you bring the 'garden' back to HGTV! Right now, it's pretty much nonexistent there.

Extremely informative. I really appreciate you taking the time to do this video, and John's time in explaining it. With all the grain around, did he say if they have a problem with rodents? Thanks...
