Join me for a tour of Clearview Horticultural Products - propagating and growing millions of clematis vines and a large assortment of other flowering and fruiting vines. Rob Wein takes us through their assortment, discusses their hybridization program, shipping, plant care - all the behind-the-scenes details of how this busy nursery produces and ships 3.5 million plants per year.
Additional info about Clearview: (www.www.clearviewh...)
Founded in 1970 in Langley BC, Clearview Horticultural Products is first and foremost a family business, now with a fifth generation of the family active in the business! Rob Wein (our tour guide) works with his parents, his brother, his nephew, and two of his sons - all contributing to the business in their own unique and important ways. From the Clearview site:
"We now have a fifth generation active in our business. Rob Wein Junior is currently completing his degree in Horticulture. His education and interest in entomology has helped propel us toward sustainable production. Dustin Wein’s Business education helps keep the finances in check. Fred Junior’s kids, who also grew up working at the nursery, have attended university and left to pursue different careers. Fred Senior’s major focus has turned to Clematis breeding, while Sidney Mary continues to ensure i’s are dotted and t’s crossed. We have worked hard at developing a great staff and currently have four locations with greenhouse area totalling over 450,000 square feet. We are proud to have become one of the major clematis propagators in North America. We continue to honour our original simple philosophy of quality products, service and selection."
BTW - if you're reading this far into the description, my favorite part of the tour happens at around 11:20 You know, superhero action movie kind of stuff.

You're absolutely right about us loving these tours - we get a ton of information and, more importantly, benefit from the experts' many years of experience. Rob was so genuine and forthcoming. Loved his take-it-in-my-stride reaction to the pot almost falling off the conveyor belt.

He said some interesting things. We grow an obscene amount of strawberries and raspberries and something we say often is 'never send them to bed with wet feet" He said something similar. We don't water too late in the day because we don't want our plants to have cold, wet roots. Another thing that was interesting to me was the use of predators. A fair few gardening/homesteading youtubers have said they don't think predators are worth the money because they either leave or die. Generally, they leave or die when they run out of food, which means they have done their job. We use a lot of Persimilis to take care of various kinds of mites. They take care of the mites and then the population dies right down, but as soon as the mite population increases again, the Persimilis come right back as well so one distribution of the predators can keep mites under control all season. Nasty little dinosaur looking bugs. Great video man, love hearing other growers perspectives and insights on things.
@FraserValleyRoseFarm
@FraserValleyRoseFarm 2 года назад
Thanks for your insights Brad. I like what you're saying about persimilis - they need a food source to survive, and they go through the spider mites rather quickly when conditions are right. If they're gone, it means they've finished the job! I has decent results releasing Neoseiulus californicus earlier in the season - they seem tolerant of wide swings in temperature and humidity, and moves over to feeding on pollen when the prey numbers are down, so they seem to be able to stick around a little better.

Thanks Cathy. I always struggle over the length a bit, because conventional wisdom says viewers won't click through to super long videos. I generally try to get topics down below 15 minutes, but preferably 10 or even 5, depending on what I'm presenting. In this case, so much of the footage was engaging and usable, I left very little on the cutting room floor, and then only because there was loud background noise or we were in transit from one spot to another.
@cathymadsen2930
@cathymadsen2930 2 года назад
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm As you grow your audience you will see a shift in desired lengths. 90% of my RU-vid watching is done on my smart TV. It automatically plays and longer format videos of 20 to 30min are typically what I watch so that is what plays. I need to actually manually line up smaller videos, which I don't mind doing when I notice they have uploaded. Do you watch Garden Answer? Their videos are perfect length ... RU-vid suggested your channel as I like GA. I see your videos as a huge inspiration for me to take the next step of selling my seedlings and cuttings .... as a home grower I always over produce!

You have the right interests to do well in horticulture - some of the transplanters, seeders and machine pruners are really cool!
