This is a complete tour of an Amtrak superliner sleeper car on the California Zephyr during early November of 2015. This includes night views which show that the train is surprisingly well lit at night. We really enjoyed our trip on this train from Chicago to Emeryville in early November of 2015. The ride was very smooth. Will take Amtrak again for sure.

I've traveled the ca zephyr on multiple occasions. Sac to Glenwood Springs being the most notable. Some where in Utah I proposed and she said yes!!!!! Since then we've traveled all the way to Chicago, only because that's that was the end of the line. For us the experience, the fellow travelers and the staff just can't be beat. Emeryville to Chicago on the Zephyr will restore you faith in humanity.

And you guys do a fabulous job with equipment that's getting older and older and budgets that are smaller and smaller despite the increasing needs for maintenance that come with such aged equipment. I was actually impressed by what good shape our train was in overall considering its age. You guys keep the lights working and tend to all sorts of details. I for one really appreciate your hard work and I thought the condition of our train was a great testament to the hard work you and other Amtrak people put in day after day. I could see that the staff was working hard because it showed in all sorts of ways. I loved the guy at the bar on our train--he was so enthusiastic about his offerings. It was great to hear such enthusiasm for one's work. Thanks for all your hard work and everyone else at Amtrak. Keep up the great work.

Rode California Zephyr all the way from Chi to SF many times in the 90’s. Wont do it again until theyve made SIGNIFICANT maintenance improvements. The velcro curtains wont stay shut bc velcro is ancient. The seats unfold flat at night to make a bed, but my seat wouldnt stay latched down, causing it to go back up into a seated pisition in the middle of the night and me to fall out. Car attendant rarely there. They are supposed to put your bed together for you and considering my tickets were always at least $800 one would expect that service, but I found myself having to change the seats into a bed myself because nobody ever showed up in the car. Fixtures in the roomette falling apart. Toilets didnt work all the way from Galesburg Illinois to END OF THE LINE once. We went 3 days with plugged up toilets that ppl were still using because nature calls, but no way to flush them. The train ran out of water because the water holding system leaked all over the tracks. They refilled the water in Galesburg but didnt fix the problem because it wouldve made the train much too late. The reason the toilets stopped flushing was because there was no water to flush them with. We were using bottled water to bathe. It was totally nasty.

Our trip is in five months. We already had a bad experience with AMTRAK going to New Orleans in coach class round trip, we don't want to make that mistake again.As is, there is a significant difference between "roomettes" on the superliner compared to the viewliner that we noticed which changes our level of comfort.Simply put, I want to relax and not deal with nasty Amtrak staff as much as possible along with enjoying the view.
@jasperedwards81
@jasperedwards81 7 лет назад
I suggest going with the roomettes. Our total cost for 2 all the way from St. Louis to Chicago to Emeryville with all meals was $645 for both of us. Don't know what Viewliner tickets go for. Roomette is tiny but you do get decent rest and can have privacy during the day if you want. Good luck with your trip.

Well, let me just say that coach class wasn't all that nice either. For $3200., I took the wife to New Orleans in 2015 and it was miserable. Two nights in a chair that did not recline, racist coach service attendants, no use of any rest rooms due to the fact that they were out of water and clogged up and we when a train stop came to stretch our legs, the attendants only told us. Said there was 30 minutes on the platform, once we started for the station, the train was already on the move! You want to see irate! I lodged several complaints. I also earned guest rewards to use the VIP lounge, we were told to get out or be escorted by transit police! Here it is a year later, we're going to try it out again.

We have traveled on Amtrak many times and always enjoyed it. We have been on the Zephyr quite a few times. Completely agree. I hope to convince my wife to take another long distance Amtrak soon. Thanks for the comment. The flying part itself is not all that bad usually, but all the hassles at the airport and how early you have to get there now and the risk of being invasively searched (as a senior citizen even) just makes me want to avoid flying anywhere if at all possible.

Great video, I travel by Amtrak when I travel long distance. The train is my very first choice when I travel long distance, I have rode Amtrak 26 times since 1/31/1974. My very first Amtrak ride was on the Silver Meteror from Richmond, VA to Wilmington, DE. I have rode the Sunset Limited 8 times, the Pacific Surfliners when they were called the San Diegans 7 times, the Texas Eagle 5 times, the Coast Starlight 3 times, the Crescent on 9/19-20/2012 from New Orleans, LA to Wilmington, DE & the Cardinal from Wilmington, DE to Chicago, IL on 10/3-4/2012. I'm planning to ride on Amtrak at a future time from San Diego to Oxnard, CA round trip on the Pacific Surfliner. My days of flying are only between Los Angeles & Manila.

True story. Back in the early '90's. I worked for a short line railroad in Arkansas. The locomotives were from the '60's bought from a Canadian railroad and completely refurbished. I was an engineer. In the nose of the locomotives was a commode. You open the lid and there was about a 4 inch pipe that went below the train. You could see the ground, (ballast and railroad ties beneath you. Yes, that is where your shit went, right on the ground beneath you when you would do your business.

I can't say for sure, but they are probably almost exactly the same. I really can't imagine them being different between the 2 types of cars. I will say that I can totally empathize with you though, because my wife also has trouble sleeping on the train. Next time we may try a full size bedroom and see if that makes any difference. I can sleep just fine though, even in the upper berth due to the motion of the train although I will admit the upper berth is a bit cramped even for small person like myself. Can't imagine how a large person would do in the upper.

Amtrak inherited it's 1st bilevels from Santa Fe's El Capitan as part of it's heritage fleet. They loved them so much, they built the Superliner bilevels with bedrooms (El Cap was all coach) and equipped ALL pasenger trains west of Chicago with them as well as the City of New Orleans & the Capitol Limited. -but now, the Superliners are older than the heritage equipment they once replaced. So the BIG question for Amtrak now after 40 years of Superlning is: what's next?-rebuild or replace........."?"

My question is, how is the food? Is it included in the cost? Is it like airline or cruise food?
@jasperedwards81
@jasperedwards81 7 лет назад
If you get either a roomette or a bedroom the food is included and that is a major reason to choose one of those over coach. The ala carte prices are mandated by Congress and are a bit excessive. As regards the quality, I thought it was pretty good, some of it very good, and some just acceptable, but overall quite decent. We actually took another train, the SW Chief about 3 years before and I think the food was better on it. But the food on this trip, the Zephyr, was definitely better than most airline (outside first class) although not nearly as good as fine dining. If you're going long distance, given the ala carte food prices, it really makes economic sense to get a roomette or bedroom to avoid those ala carte food fees. The food was pretty good to very good depending on the item. I do suggest bringing your own booze if you get a sleeper because booze prices are excessive and they allow you to consume your own in your own room.
@cpotisch
@cpotisch 7 лет назад
I've always been very impressed with the food. There are plenty of options, and I've never had anything bad. For lunch, I always have the black bean and corn veggie burger. This is gonna sound like I'm exaggerating, but it is legitimately the best veggie burger I have ever had. Additionally, those in sleepers can get room service at no charge.

Shower Looks not so clean. How is Amtrak in General with cleanliness and comfort?
@jasperedwards81
@jasperedwards81 7 лет назад
Sorry for the delay in responding. Have been out of town. To answer your question, in general, we found Amtrak to be extremely comfortable and as clean as anyone would want. I don't know what you're picking up on in the video regarding the shower, but I didn't notice anything from a cleanliness standpoint that bothered me. The only lack of maintenance that I've seen is not cleaning the outside windows and outside of the train as often as one would like and one of two lights in our roomette didn't work on one of the settings. Other than that, considering how old Amtrak's equipment is, I think it is remarkably well maintained overall.
@phantomcruizer
@phantomcruizer 7 лет назад
John Edwards I believe the question was aimed at the fact that most things public are not maintained very well. My personal issue is bedbugs (which is an epidemic in this country now) and other vermin.
@KandiKlover

Kandi Klover; as much as I'd like to believe you; how do you know there are no bed bugs on an Amtrak? Some of the nicest hotels in NY have had bed bug problems, simply because they multiply like horny rabbits, and they are very hard to get rid of. I check every bed in every hotel I stay in before putting my suitcase on the bed.

@Averagestoner 6 лет назад
grandpa 1 Okay well in that case bedbugs could be anywhere, if it can make it in the nicest of hotels I'm pretty sure it can make it's way on am Amtrak, the key is maintenance and prevention and how well the company is at doing both

Albert Von Richthofen there is alot of videos they show the roomettes and sleepers many of them are just rooms no halls no shower or bathroom videos so this was nice to see Amtrak hasn't changed went from Chicago to Portland Oregon back in 1994 planning a trip with my son this summer the roomettes are cute and good for my son and I. it was crazy seeing the sliding doors between cars almost lost the top of one of my fingers it slid so quick...... so working with the public so many people are nasty and rude if something isn't going your way don't take it out on the worker more then likely its beyond there control. even if they make notes things are not gonna get fixed at a snap of the finger. it this line of travel has irritated you so much that you filed complaints and already have it set in your head that its going to be horrible then your trip will be horrible your gonna search for anything negative down to the attendant didn't smile big enough. I suggest Greyhound travel. maybe flying or take your own vehicle so you can have full control of your travel experience.

Spruce Moon, it is not that things were not going "my" way, as you so illustriously put it. Sorry, but placing my wife or myself in harm's way was not part of my vacation, nor was it a coincidental accident that an Amtrak staff worker hit my wife. The employee was racist and of violent nature, both qualities I personally disapprove of. Furthermore, if I "did" have a personal vehicle to drive, I would have taken it, but since I live aboard my yacht, I have little need for a car. Hence the reasoning for taking the train as opposed to my personal helicopter, much cheaper and LESS WORK...
@albertvonrichthofen2335

I am not a control freak neither. I just expect to be treated with respect. People spend lots of hard earned money to take a train ride or trip. They pay their way, so therefore a little bit of dignity could be afforded. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe society as a whole has become completely impersonal towards one another and just don't care. That's fine by me too. I can always revert back to being a negative heartless combatant if this is the case.

@jasperedwards81
@jasperedwards81 7 лет назад
It just totally depends on the day and time of year and probably other stuff. You really need to call an agent on the phone to get the best rates because when we looked online, we discovered a huge discrepancy (hundreds of dollars between just a single day difference in departure date). Total though for 2 all the way to Emeryville from Chicago in 2015 was under $650, and a key thing to keep in mind, there is no food charge for 3 meals a day with the roomette. So that alone makes up for a huge amount of whatever the difference in cost is.
@cpotisch
@cpotisch 7 лет назад
It's actually the same price on the website, it's just that the agents can easily see the prices over many days, so it's easy for them to find the cheapest days.

I'm a rail-lover, and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed your video of a full tour aboard Amtrak's sleeper car. Thank you! I own many rail DVDs -- and, granted, a few are awesome -- but none of them present details of the sleeping components of a long-distance rail trip. Someday, yes, perhaps after I've retired, I'll take those long, long-distance trips, such as Chicago to San Francisco aboard Amtrak's California Zephyr; Newark to Miami aboard Amtrak's Silver Meteor (is that the name of the train?); and, on VIA Rail Canada, the Rocky Mountaineer from Vancouver to Banff, and the CP train from Toronto to Vancouver. I plan on repeating my viewing of your videos because rail travel, while not for everyone -- as you commented here -- is so relaxing and, when there are scenic spots along the way, quite exhilarating! One doesn't need to wait until retirement, though, to take shorter, long-distance routes, such as the one aboard the Lake Shore Limited from Chicago to New York City (or vice versa).

You're so welcome. I was actually amazed by how well lit the train was at night. If anyone falls or slips, it won't be on account of lack of lighting. Amtrak really does a nice job on this. Will be interested to see how European or Asian trains compare in this regard if I ever get the chance.

I am very glad to hear that. My purpose in making and posting the videos I did of this Amtrak trip was to show what it was like to take a long distance train ride on Amtrak and how nice the facilities are. This was our second long distance trip, and by far the longest (Chicago to Emeryville), and because we enjoyed them both so much, we are strongly considering taking a third trip sometime this year. Hope you will end up taking one sometime.

I took a trip to Mardi Gras this year 2017 ( from Chicago to New Orleans ), and I booked the Bedroom going there and the Roomette coming back ( City of New Orleans Superliner train ). I may never travel coach on Amtrak again for long distance trips! It's just that a bedroom on a Superliner for a trip longer than one day will cost a pretty penny. Traveled alone, the bedroom with more space than a Roomette and the enclosed bathroom and shower, loved it! Not to mention that I didn't have to buy meals and got to board early!

All those stairs going up and down reminds me of going from one end of an aircraft carrier to the other end. Where are the stewards at? I heard they can get you beds ready at night and set them back up for day use. It's a lot different than from the 1959 film "Some Like It Hot" with the great Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe. I think I like the train better from "Some Like It Hot". Great video.

Thanks so much for the constructive reminder. My wife actually tells me all the time to pan slower and she is apparently right on this point. Have actually signed up for a video technical skills course which I hope will cover all sorts of issues like this so I can make videos that are easier and more enjoyable for people to watch in the future. Thanks again for taking the time to make a constructive criticism. Hearing what one has done wrong stated in the right way and with the right attitude is one of the very best ways to learn how to do better in the future, and that is my goal. I want my videos to be as technically and substantively as good as possible. My sister is a professional in this trade but we haven't shared as many tricks of the trade as might have been expected. Hope my course will help me avoid issues like the one you identified. Thanks again for commenting.

Sorry to hear that. I can tell you for certain that the motion level is way, way, way lower in the lower level as compared to the upper. @jasperedwards81

I honestly believe there is way more danger in simply driving to the grocery store or going shopping than taking a train trip and having a serious accident. Fear of accidents is not a real reason not to take train trips in any objective sense of how dangerous is the activity actually. But different people fear different things and that's okay too--a fear need not be rooted in reality and many fears are not.

My mother and my wife rode in a handicap sleeper on the way from San Jose to Albany, Oregon (while I sat up in the reading car). I was allowed by the cabin steward to join them after daylight. Their room had the whole width of the car, with a standup shower and sink on one side, which accommodated my mother's walker. Two beds were on the opposite side of the car. Not real fancy, but the cabin steward saw to their every need; including bring my mother's meals to her.

This was intended for people who either can't see it for themselves or who want to see basic things like this before traveling. Lots of people have viewed this. Sorry you didn't like it, but apparently a lot of other people have. Don't really understand your complaint or the need to criticize. And you're totally right, if you hate it after 2 minutes or even less, by all means stop watching. No one is forcing you.

I know. I haven't actually taken a train myself in Europe or Asia but I know they are so much better, especially how new, fresh and clean they look in Europe and Japan--it just puts our's to shame here. But I know it's lack of money for Amtrak and not lack of effort. The train crew personnel we have encountered on Amtrak I feel were all trying their hardest to do a really good job for everyone on board.
