Day 7 of the Tour of Idaho. Route for today was from North Fork Idaho to Lowell Idaho. Although we had illusions of it being an easier day, despite long mileage, we were fooled again. The majority of the miles were easier dirt road miles, but there is some great singletrack right off the bat in the first 40 miles and we had some drama getting out of Elk City that delayed us. Nonetheless, it was another absolutely awesome day on the Tour of Idaho.

A new Benchmark has been set for off-road videos! The Bar is high. Incredible riding gentlemen! Especially day after day. I'm sore just watching.

These are by far th ebest ToI videos! I have long meant to give it a go but life keeps getting in the way. Oncologist told methis nextsummer will likely be my last "physically functional" summer so LOOK OUT IDAHO! Here I come!

@@ridewithmike962 sorry if you’ve answered this a thousand times already, but what’s your video setup? I’m curious how you recorded all-day footage and how you changed out storage cards and kept batteries charged.

You do a very good job of not cursing. If you left earlier that morning I think going through that first single track section in the dark would have been even more sketchier. If you end a long brutal ride with a laugh in the evening it was all worth it.

Such a epic adventure... It is inspiring to follow your journey threw IDAHO.. This is a goal of mine, just need to find a crazy like minded buddy to take on the challenge and make it happen. Awesome Job Guys!

Luckily I have lots of crazy like minded buddies. This was an awesome adventure. I don't regret a single minute of the effort or money spent doing it.

You guys are amazing. This trail is definitely over my skill level. While Idaho riding is on my list it will not be on single tracks. Love the videos.

Love the video's. I will comment that the long sections of time-laps shots would have been a little nicer in this one if broken up a bit more with something. Still isn't bad but just a bit much all at once. My buddy and I are hoping to do this ride soon and the video's are so helpful, glad you created them! Thank you.

Mike, love the videos! My father and I have watched each video at least nine or ten times. We are preparing to do a five day section of the TOI in August. I noticed you have an upgraded seat, it appears it might be from seat concepts. Is it the XL or the comfort? What do you recommend for the TOI?

I'm glad you've enjoyed the videos. I have a Seat Concepts XL comfort. When I first bought it, I was concerned it would be too big and feel awkward for dirt biking. I was completely wrong.....it was a butt saver in every sense of the word and totally worth it. Seriously made long days in the saddle so much more comfortable.

Mike, these videos have been great! Awesome insight into what it takes to do the TOI. Curious what gps app you see running on your phone? Seem to be pretty dang accurate for a phone app.

I was running Gaia GPS on our iPhones with the Forest Service 2016 map layer with the Forest Service MVUM map layer on top. We also had a Garmin GPS and an ipad mini (running Gaia) between us. Trail Tech GPS is a great one if you're using a dedicated GPS unit. In my opinion, the biggest key is redundancy. You really need a minimum of 2, preferably 3 units. I was glad that I did. We each had 3 GPS units of some sort between along with an emergency beacon locator.

@@ridewithmike962 appreciate the intel! Definitely agree with you on the redundancy with the gps units. Have been looking at adding the Voyager Pro to my Garmin, but the Gaia app looks like another option to add. Great work on all these videos. Best set of TOI videos out there.

Another awesome video, thanks. Question: you're able to work your phones, with gloves on, and phone in the tank bag. Special gloves and/or tank bag to do this?

I was using Klim Mojave gloves and Fly Patrol XC gloves. In the Day 7 video I was wearing the Klim gloves and they would work with my phone to an extent. Sometimes they didn't work great, and i would have to take them off, and often did to be more precise.

I'm really enjoying your videos. How much gas did you need to carry for the longest sections? Would you consider camping if you were to do it again?

I had a 4.2 gallon tank and with my mpg, I would have been really close to make the longest sections with no extra gas, but I carried some for insurance because all it takes is one thing to go wrong and you have to backtrack or something, and then your buffer for gas is gone. I only had to carry extra gas a few days. I love adventure riding and camping off the bike, but the Tour of Idaho is setup differently, and the objective is to go as light as possible so that you can ride any trails without weight and size being a factor.

Yes, Mojave Saddle Bags. We did not camp along the way. The Tour of Idaho is set up so that if you make the mileage each day, you end up in a small town each night for lodging. All the details are at motorcyclejazz.com

Interesting to note how your rigs have gone more minimal in the last 4 years... from the bikes to the luggage and Rotopax to mere water bottles... why do you think that is? Seems most riders go the other direction as they age.

We still enjoy "Adventure Riding", but it's all just a matter of different tools for different applications. Those pictures from 4 years ago are when we were riding the IDBDR (Idaho Backcountry Discovery Route) which is designed more around bigger bikes. It's just dirt roads with some asphalt connectors. Definitely beautiful, but the Tour of Idaho and the IDBDR are apples and oranges. TOI is focused on singletrack, and then dirt roads where necessary. We definitely needed plated dirt bikes for the Tour. I love all types of riding :)

For radios are you using gmrs with headsets in helmet or a Bluetooth communicators?

GMRS radios with headsets in the helmet with a push to talk button on the bars (from planetheadset.com). Bluetooth is nice for the wireless capability, but range is very short.

@@ridewithmike962 I noticed the cord hanging there. Was the radio on the bars then? I was thinking of the radio on/in my vest and a PTT button on cord down the arm and on forefinger. Push button with thumb. I have also considered the gmrs with bluetooth to connect to a sena or something similar.

@@madman432000 Our radios were in our Klim vests (back side packet). The in-helmet speaker/microphone setup has two wires that come out. One goes to the radio and the other to the push to talk button on the bars.

What push to talk communication set up are you using?

We were using a wired Push to Talk system combined with Baofeng radios. Radios were in our packs. Push to talk button on our bars, and a boom mic and ear speakers in our helmets. They worked great. Plugging in and out is a pain, but it was worth it due to the distance and range we had with the radios.

Mike I noticed you had to take you right hand off the bars to use your PTT button. Could it be mounted on your vest? Looking at that setup for my son and myself.

@@kevinrmack44 I didn't absolutely have to but often found it more convenient. The reach to the PTT button was pretty far to reach all the way over my light/turn signal indicator. I could have swapped positions but then it didn't fit right with the levers and handguards. When I was going slow or stopped (while holding the clutch in), I found it easier to just reach over with my right hand, but when riding the trail and not holding in my clutch, I would use my left hand. Personally, I don't think I would have liked it on my vest because I think it would probably be harder to find and push, but I could be wrong.....probably worth some testing.
