Tour of London's Mayfair with Julian McDonnell from Joolz Guides.
Claridges in Brook Street was founded by a butler in 1855.
Then in 1860 Victorian and Albert were hosted by Empress Eugenie of France.
During World War II many of Europe’s royal families were in exile, one of whom was King Peter of Yugoslavia who fathered his son prince Alexander in suite 212.
Churchilll declared the room to be part of Yugoslavia for one day and Yugoslavian earth was placed under the bed so he could be born on Yugoslav soil.
Then Churchill discovered he hadn’t been re-elected and came to Claridges to commiserate.
Gordon Ramsey used to run the restaurant but no longer since losing his Michelin star.
Brook Street is also home to the Handel Hendrix museum.
The word brook refers to the Tyburn river which used to run here.
Savile Row is where the Tuxedo was invented by Henry Poole when
James Potter of Tuxedo Park NY was invited by the prince of Wales to sandringham. He wanted the same suit as the prince.
In 1969 The Beatles performed their last ever gig on the roof of Apple Studios at No.3 Savile Row but the police closed it down after 40 minutes.
Burlington Arcade
1819 - Lord Cavendish inherited Burlington house and built this covered arcade to stop people throwing things into his garden.
He recruited beadles from his old regiment the 10th Hussars so his wife and friends could shop unmolested. These beadles are now the oldest police force in the world.
No running, whistling or opening umbrellas.
The Punch Bowl - 2008 It was bought by Guy Ritchie and Madonna for 2.5 million off the son of a gangster.
Ritchie retained Madonna’s share after they divorced.
Famous patrons include David Beckham, Princes William and Harry, Leonardo di Caprio, Robert Downey and Justin Timberlake.
It was investigated for charging tourists more than locals but cleared.
Ritchie sold it in 2013.

I stayed there in that hotel, and Madonna was in the room above. And Prince Andrew walked in with security, and Donatella Versace. Also Steven Spielberg was staying there. Very expensive. Joolz, I'm so fortunate to have bump into your RU-vid channel ! I've been to London 5 times and I seriously doubt I'll ever be able to go back again. Your videos have brought amazing memories of my days in the British capital so I can't find the words to thank you enough, they've made me feel as if I were there myself... Your Videos are both informative and entertaining,. I'm fully aware they mean hard work but please, keep them coming. Congratulations to you and to the cameraman !!! I discovered that I have ancestors who lived at number 70 and 69 South Audley Street in the 1800s. They were tradesmen living in a four storey Georgian house. Their shop on the same premises was called Archard's jewellery shop and it was located right across the street opposite Goode's China Shop. The present number 70 at the corner of South Street is not the one in the 1800s. The present building was built about 1899. Before that the Archards lived at 21 Robert Street near Grosvenor Square - Robert Street in Mayfair no longer exists. Many retail businesses have come and gone in mayfair - Archard's was one of many that few people know about. Mr Archard also worked for Alexander Purvis a clockmaker who lived in North Audley Street. My maternal grandmother's maiden name is Archard - that's where I get the ancestors.

This time it touched me deeply because I used to walk in May Fair a lot when I spent a time in London a long time ago. Beau Brummel and The Prince Regent did not get on. At a party or event The Prince Regent spoke to a person on Brummel's right, then to him left, ignoring Brummel. Brummel's revenge came a few minutes later when 'Priny' (The Prince's nickname.) was speaking to one of Brummel's friends. Brummel addressed his mate, saying: "Who's your fat friend?"

It was Spencer Tracy. Also a little boy said that it was the hardest place he had ever had to leave. When I was a child our London house was in Hill Street, and if we had to be in London on Sunday it was always lunch at Claridge's. The dish of the day back then was always chicken pie on Sunday. I think it was oxtail on Thursday, which my father always enjoyed there.
@mscott3918
@mscott3918 4 года назад
Claridge's was founded as Mivart's in 1812 and bought by Mr and Mrs Claridge, who owned the hotel next door. Mr Claridge was known for varying the depth of his bow, depending on whether a guest was Imperial, Royal or Serene highness.

Harry Winston was a good friend of possibly the greatest private trader, Jessie Livermore (Reminiscences Of A Stock Operator). He gave his wife a large fortune in jewels and whenever he had a bad run he would give the jewels back to Harry Winston and he would stake him to start up again. When he hit it big (which he mostly did) he would buy the jewels back. Amazing.
