A quick tour and explanation of the one ton jib crane I built for my shop.
This has been a great addition and a huge back saver. Please leave any questions, comments, concerns or criticisms below and Ill try to respond. I hope you enjoy the video, thanks for watching and be sure to subscribe!
A few years ago I decided to put a crane in my shop. The decision was 2 fold: my gas forklift was a hassle to operate inside and I knew that the more I aged the less weight I could move around. This crane is the result of a great many hours of research, designing and fabricating.

I love content like this where the narration assumes the viewer knows all of the foundational concepts allowing you to speak about only the most critical info and get through the whole process in a very reasonable amount of time. I'm definitely subscribing to your channel!

great build......I've been wanting one thinking of how to build one looked at many videos, I have a work area that I really could use one, I have a 6x8 x 3/8ths thick wall rectangle, tube....ing, a FRIEND sold his business, gave me lots and lots of stuff, well on the final clean up i got the ugly doublesided cantilever, with many arms perfect to put the long stuff away.. well they kept the expensive stuff I got the rest, beams, great structural material, and waited for the owner to show up and gave me the rest.. and behold a jib crane was in the mix....but no pivot pins, now I can put up my dream......well one of many to old to pick up heavy stuff .and it still has the trolley on it .. the jib crane looks like yours but the guy had built the jib to mount on the side of the cantilever.. rack.. I'm so grateful.. but it will be a task getting it up..enjoyed many of your videos..

We built a bunch of 5'x8' metal fence panels this week. Each panel weighed around 110lbs. This crane lifted and moved each one off the table and stacked them. The stack was head high when we finished building them. Its a super useful piece of kit for sure!

Worked at a company that had over 100 vehicles and some talented hard working young truck mechanics who talked company into giving them some overtime to rebuild large diesel engines. They made two 12' jib cranes that were connected to steel upright I beams in an old garage. One day insurance company guy walked thru and seen they had a heavy engine hanging out pretty far on home made jib crane. He told them they could not hang that much weight on crane. They removed electric hoists to satisfy him. Then they only used them at night or weekends. Some of the old machine shops that I did electrical work in had halve a dozen jib cranes before they owned a fork truck.

Everything being tied together allows me to clamp my ground leads to the grid and weld on everything thats attached. The table, cars, projects can all be attached to the grounding points. This allows me to only worry about 1 lead. You mentioned a "locking device" in your video...here's something you can 'ADD' to your nice custom jib crane...procure a brake drum or a rotor. Secure the axle, 90 degrees off your upright, just above your beam, aimed toward the beam. Secure your drum or rotor to your beam. Mount a brake master cylinder to the backside of your column. Construct a pivot arm that will actuate the plunger on the master cylinder and hook a smooth small link chain to it, dropping it down with a gate hook on it. Make and Mount a ring to your upright so that when you "put the brakes on" the "peddle" can be held down, by hooking the gate hook into the ring, to lock it down. You can also use this to slow down the slide. Just put calipers around one edge of the I-beam and drop down a chain with a knob on it, just to help control wench movement. By using these brakes, you can handle huge loads by yourself. (I was a tool designer for a large USA railroad for over 35 years.) This works well and usn't THAT hard to add. Enjoy...by the way, thanks for making such a nice video and you did well on fabrication, too! Keep on keepin'' on! & be safe
@unitedstatesofbuild4915
@unitedstatesofbuild4915 6 лет назад
Thanks for the awesome idea. I like your thoughts on a master cylinder. Great comment! I was thinking disc brakes, along the lines of a go cart kit or something. Your idea would certainly be suited to heavier loads. Thanks for dropping by.
@general5104
@general5104 6 лет назад
UnitedStatesofBuild I built thousands of prototypes, over my career. I had the reputation that you weren't going to over load anything I built because I spared no expense in doing it heavy duty! Lits of times I've seen several tons of equipment being changed out using something I designed to pull something weighing less than 200 pounds, but if I make it safe I make it idiot safe, too. Always over engineer something and then rate it for half of what it will easily and safely do. That way everyone stays safe! The nice thing about using a brake, is that you can gently slow down a load, so it doesn't swing. Most jib cranes don't have power creep. You have to pull them , or push the load itself.so if you put a scissor similar to ice tongs, in your carriage movable and weld some disk brake pads to its tips and put a pad either on both sides of your I-beam or on both the upper and lower if the bottom section of the beam and install a spring to keep it open. Drop a rope with the end run thru a 4" long piece of cut-off broomstick, a little over head high. This way you will never ding yourself on the brake handle and it will always be right next to your load, so you can manually put the brakes on to control your move, say you're pulling an engine out of a car, and it has the tranny still on it...you've got your transfer wheels blocked and are pulling at an angle. When it comes loose the whole thing is going to be moving fast. You can stop the load by tugging the load brake a little. Same goes for your beam.you want the pin secured TO the beam, so that your rotor or brake drum can be secured TO that pin. Then the guts be secured to your upright. You see, the boom will swing wildly if it can! If you wish, you can attach a rope to its control to operate the boom brake from above the load. There's so many things you can do to make your jib crane safe. I enjoyed conversing with you. If you need to brainstorm any time...email me. Thanks

very nice build! How much did the material for it cost? Without the hoist and trolley, just the steelbars and stuff?
@unitedstatesofbuild4915
@unitedstatesofbuild4915 4 года назад
I have a good friend that does steel building erection and so I got the beam remnants and pipe pieces from him. It was only a few $hundred for those. The bearings were $40ish dollars if I remember correctly. I used an old chain binder for the top strut.
@unitedstatesofbuild4915
@unitedstatesofbuild4915 4 года назад
Concrete cost is whatever the local company charges. At the time of this it was $90-ish per yard. Then there is small costs like rebar, hardware, some cable and random plate.

@unitedstatesofbuild4915
@unitedstatesofbuild4915 4 года назад
If I was to do it again I would add 2 or 3 more feet to the overhead beam and I would add a way to fine tune the overall level. After all these years of use it slightly favors one side. Its not bad, but if left alone it will slowly swing to its favorite spot.

@@unitedstatesofbuild4915 yeah a bolt or anything to look it in place seems like a good idea. Especially because I wanna build it outdoors, so to lock it against wind would be a smart move

Hello, my name is Angelo and I am writing to you from Italy with the help of a translator..... Congratulations it's a really nice project, and as you said age is starting to make itself felt and the back is starting to hurt (I am 55 years old, and I recently had back surgery!!), so for my garage I have to make a jib crane ma.....a double boom. My garage is rectangular and in addition to putting the car in it, it is also full of my equipment, so I would like the crane to be able to move throughout the rectangle of space I have, of course I do not want it to lift a ton, I'll settle for 150 Kilograms. I wanted to ask you for a design on paper, if you have it, alternatively I can settle for the wonderful pictures with description (which of course I will have to translate and convert the inches to Metric system). I will take various cues, you have filled your project with valuable functional details. And then I want my implementation to be SAFE and hassle-free. Thanks for your possible help..... Best Regards from Italy....and again compliments.

@davclay9954 6 лет назад
Ya, let er build up, don't be scared to put too much in....more is better than not enough. And it looks as tho you are either a bit too jerky or you are speeding up then slowing down over and over. Watch the puddle! The kind of structure you are doing it should be welded 100%...you are leaving the tips or ends not welded. When starting a vertical like that it gives you the opportunity to start your weld on the tip as a horizontal then change to a vertical....should have an "L" shape weld....same as when you get to the top....go right over it and let it build up and fill in......hahaha.....thats my 2 cents anyways! Hope that was understandable.
