[Recorded August 2012] Update here: • Dorm Room Version 2.0 ...
I got plenty of requests for a dorm tour last year, so I figured that there would be interest in one this year too. Considering that I'm living in an old hospital room (my dorm used to be a retirement home), I think I have the place looking pretty good. convenient sink location. that much storage surprises me. carpets are softer than tiles as well. very good conversion from retirement home to college room.

It was a small 1-family built about 1880 1890 or so, an aparetment house built in front of it in the 20s, attached to the hip to this place. Sometime after, when paneling was king, the house was chopped up into 4 apartments. The Bedroom was probably a side bedroom, and the kitchen was likely the master bedroom. Could've been a 60's job. As for the elevators, they might've been bottom-drive. The Payne at Leominster Hospital, Elevator A to be exact, was bottom-drive, then US turned it hydro.

All of my Living Room/Kitchen outlets were added on the outside as well. Imagine that kind of space with NO power. It did at one point. :) I'd say from the lack of outlets, even for a hospital room, was about the 50's or so, being block construction. Wasn't as common in the 40's and back (but was used).

I've seen a few dorms like that. Especially 1920s-era ones like Spencer at UNC Chapel Hill...

Funny for me as apparently I have a room to myself for my freshman year at the college I'm attending at starting in the fall. And we do have single rooms available for Freshman

You're lucky that your school allows external furniture to be brought in dorm rooms. Wentworth had a ridiculously strict policy against that. Because of that, your room never had a sliver of hope of feeling "homey" because you couldn't have your own couch/futon. Enjoy college, bro. The years only fly by faster each year.

You have two outlets total? I have 6, in an apartment. Fun jury0rigging stuff, when outlets are not abundant. Must've been an older hospital building.

I just got accepted into SLU and was wondering a few things. 1. Is this in fact a single? 2. Do you recommend bringing a TV/ Video Game Station to a college like this? 3. Is it hard to get a room like this or is everyones like this?

That is actually a fairly nice dorm room! I have a friend that goes to SLU too! I was planning to go there until I figured out that wasn't that good for my major. So instead, I've decided to go to the University of St. Thomas up in St. Paul, Minnesota. I've been loving it so far! My dorm room isn't too bad either! I've uploaded a tour of mine too.
