We've got our Cruise America rental RV back home and it's time for a tour! They gave us a 2020 Thor Majestic 28A Class C which is the same size and model as the sale units we took a look at last month. We're comparing this brand new rig to those 2015 units that are for sale, walking through what's the same, what's different, and why some things have been upgraded. Come along and check it out!

I read some of the comments below about freezing temps. You mentioned using skirts if you are staying full time, but what came to mind is the idea of just wrapping and insulating any of the exposed plumbing and tanks once you purchased the unit. I'm sure even just wrapping the bottom third of the tanks would keep them above freezing temp. Likewise, pipe wrap would be readily available at hardware stores. If you are willing to crawl under and do the work, it might be worth the effort.
@Five2Go
@Five2Go 4 года назад
If the lines and tanks are accessible, you could totally add insulation to them! Having seen the underside of quite a few different styles of RV, it would be extremely challenging on some models. Motorhomes have a lot going on underneath while travel trailers are pretty simple and accessible. Skirting is a pretty easy option if you're going to be stationary for a while, but if you're on the move during cold weather a lot some elbow grease could go a long way.

We heard from a previous employee in the comments on a different video that the quality of the mechanics varies a lot from location to location. That being said, if you buy one and use the warranty you can't have the work done at a Cruise America location - they only service their rental fleet and won't touch sold units. You have to take it to a public RV shop. Maybe that's a good thing in some areas!

CA lists the prices on their website for each rig. It depends on the mileage. Right now (December 2023) the 28a’s are on sale between $42k-$46k between 120,000-150,000 miles and 2018-2019 years.
@jbirsner
@jbirsner 4 года назад
Have so much enjoyed these three videos and the discussions that follow. Has anybody gone to the people that build these rigs out and just buy a model before it ever gets to CA? With the number of units being cranked out, there might be some economy of scale, and heaven knows whoever's building them has had enough experience to do the project right!
@Five2Go
@Five2Go 4 года назад
Thor builds them, and you can get the same rig without the Cruise America modifications from dozens of dealers across the country. I don't know if their contract disallows them getting selling these ones to the public though, or if you could work out a deal with Cruise America to get one newer or what. It might be worth investigating?
@bridgetmurray1163

Thanks for giving us a tour! It was helpful to learn about the differences; a new 2020 isn't in my budget but being a DIY type I wonder how much of this I could retrofit into an older 28A such as the shower door and glass stove cover. Definitely like the more neutral and modern wood color. This was nice to see a "live preview" of what a 2015 could look like with a cabinetry makeover. Thanks for delving into the solar trickle charger as well. Since I'll be living in mine full time one of my goals will be to see if I can put a more robust solar array on the roof and install a larger house battery. Still not going to Burning Man though!
@Five2Go
@Five2Go 4 года назад
These 2020's aren't for sale, just the 2015/16 models. Unless you wait a few years I suppose! You could easily do the magnetic latches and maybe the door, and adding solar to one of these would be like on any other rig. We do like the colors in this one more though and that's not as easy to change...
@Bobs-bd3yo

We're giving it a shot! It's a lot smaller, that's for sure, but there is a lot we like about a motorhome vs a towable. I just found your channel and am retiring in a couple of years. We have a trailer currently but are thinking Class C is the way to go. I would never have even known about the rental RV's for sale or Cruise America if not for you guys so thank you. So my current question is about the generator. How many gallons does it hold, how long will it run, and can it power the AC, lights, etc while driving the unit?
@BenFyvie
@BenFyvie 4 года назад
Are there are any mechanical/utility components under the dinette seats. I think in the older rental you looked at you mentioned that there were (but I don't know that you showed them). I'm wondering if you could talk about or show this on the newer unit. This is important to me because I would want to replace the dinette with dual reclining chairs and if there were mechanical/utility components mounted to the floor under the dinette seats then they would need to be relocated before a dual reclining seat unit could be installed. Thanks for the tour and highlighting what is different in the newer units!
@Five2Go
@Five2Go 4 года назад
There is a bunch of stuff under the dinette including the fuse panel and heater. We're thinking that we'd replace the couch with either a better couch (read: one with arms) or a pair of recliners. We talk about that a bit more in another video (coming soon!) we recorded after spending a night in the rig.

According to the FAQ the generator is $3.50/hour to run. They check the hours at pickup and drop-off. That charge is a bit high if you ask me and we didn't use it at all for the week we had the RV because we always had electric hookups. We full-timed for almost two years in our travel trailer and only used our generator for about 20 hours total, and that was almost all in one 3-day boondocking spot. I've heard of some people running the generator while driving to run the roof AC but then your MPG would drop to 3-4mpg probably which would be really expensive on top of the $3.50/hour!

It has the three normal tanks - fresh, gray, and black. I'm not sure of their size though. If you're asking how it would be as a fulltime vehicle for just two adults, it would be awesome! The mileage is about 6-10 depending on what you're driving over, so really not awful considering it's a gas V10. I'm not sure how big the tank is though - I'm guessing it's somewhere in the 55-60 gallon range.

@Five2Go
@Five2Go 4 года назад
@@bridgetmurray1163 there's a big difference between traveling in cold weather and being full-time stationary. If you're not moving you can add things like skirts, put a heater underneath, use a heated hose, and you'll basically keep everything toasty and moving just fine. If you're traveling it becomes a whole different game you have to play. A lot of it depends heavily on how your RV is built too. As far as I know, these 28A's don't have any heating directed at the tanks or exposed plumbing so you'd have to be super careful when spending any amount of time below freezing. Little note for your winter heating problem on your water tank storage they're very economically priced heating pads DC and AC I've use those and I also have used diesel field heaters 12 volt they're very economical to use I can get about 10 days using my one little heater Lycoming 8000 + 12000 what systems let me know where your storage tanks are vent the hate to them and used little heating pads they're also dc-powered drop-in heating elements you can use I'm 60 years old when I was fifteen I was modifying Vans and other things to be able to live in them didn't think it'd be such quite the market should have got into it for business trailer accessories in RV accessory houses are expensive look into RV salvage supply much cheaper way to go pass it on

We're not towing anything with the rental but we do plan on towing our Ford C-Max with whatever motorhome we buy. This rig got about 8mpg when we were driving it this past week.

My camping/wheeling buddy bought the smaller model. He tows his TJ 2 door with no problem. I looked at these just other day. Retiring this week. Great deal for starter Claa C. Nice touches for 2020. But, you will have to wait couple of years before on selling market. My 2 cents

Great rig but there isn't enough room around the stool in the bathroom for fluffy people. No side room. Sigh. Also, velcro worries me a little. Stuff gets into it and it loses its hold. Know what I mean?

@@beckyleavitt7808 Same here Becky! I retire in February. I've been looking for almost a year. Being that I will be a solo woman RVer, i want my Class C to be 24 - 27 feet. The gently-used ones I have seen with low mileage is $45 - $50,000 😱; that's a lot more than I want to spend. I'm not willing to make payments; I'm going to be on a fixed income and I don't want any debt. Been there; done that!

how much clothing is it realistic to have on board We are going to be traveling with two teenagers for 10 days
@Five2Go
@Five2Go 4 года назад
You can bring more than you'd think. Remember you have that huge outdoor compartment in the back so you can keep half your clothes out there and then just swap them for the dirty laundry halfway through your trip. The storage inside is somewhat limited so you'll want to keep it to the necessities though. Depending on your climate and how dirty you plan on getting, maybe 3 pairs of pants/shorts and 10-12 shirts each?

What do you use for GPS? Geoff Whose wife bought a Rand-McNally.
@Five2Go
@Five2Go 4 года назад
I use Google maps on my phone. If we're in an area where we know there will be height or weight restrictions we do some research ahead of time online and route accordingly, but that was really only a problem when we were in New England last year. I've never seen or heard a compelling reason for a dedicated GPS now that phones do everything.

So why no oven.
@Five2Go
@Five2Go 4 года назад
They probably don't include one because RV ovens are finicky if you don't know how to light them and use them. We don't like them because they're so small and heat unevenly. We had a convection microwave oven in the rig we fulltimed in and did everything from biscuits and cookies to casseroles and flatbreads in it. It was MUCH better than an RV oven, and much larger too.

No, it does not. We don't see those on Class C's very often unless they're one of the much more expensive models with lots of other bells and whistles. That's a much more common accessory on Class A's.

How much to rent one? You have to go onto their site and build a reservation to see - the rates vary by region, time of year, and a few other factors. If you're asking how much to buy one, the 2015 version of this rig starts around $26-28k.

This is interesting. This was NOT our Cruise America Experience at all!!!! This camper is the type of camper we expected. We showed up and we're given a cloth seated camper that was more than 10 years old with stains everywhere. The RV leaked from every skylight and was given to us dirty. Clearly they paid you guys well!!!!
@Five2Go
@Five2Go 4 года назад
From what we've been told they just switched from cloth to pleather in the last two or three model years precisely because they're easier to clean and resist stains much better. Did you mention the condition of the RV to them? I can't speak for every location, but I'm pretty sure the one we've dealt with in Denver would definitely have made it right. They haven't paid us for any of these videos by the way - we went in cold to look at what they had for sale and they provided us with a discounted rental as a "thank you" for the free advertising that the video generated. We're continuing to make these videos for y'all though, Cruise America isn't involved in them at all. We think these could be a great and affordable option on the used RV market but we've never seen anyone talk about them so we're taking a deep dive into them and sharing what we find.

@ComputerER2010

Let me update this a bit. Cruise America has done NOTHING to resolve this. I have had to open a BBB complaint and still no response from CA. I did speak to the franchise and they offered a full refund with deposit. However, they admitted that the camper was NOT one of theirs. They had received it from a one way transfer. They didn't know it leaked or was dirty. So really all I am out now is the cleaning supplies I purchased to clean their camper and the gas from driving it to the campground and back. Yet Cruise America themselves has done NOTHING to resolve it.. It is just a good thing the local franchise cared enough.

James Bowers: I am sorry for your very poor experience with Cruise America corporate. Upon further reflection, the nice couple from Five2go were probably going to get exceptional customer support. Their local dealer had an incentive to treat them right - knowing they were going to review them on their channel.
