In 1994 when I attended penn state mont alto campus I went to Gettysburg every free chance I had that entire year and I really thought I knew everything about the battle there inside and out. Well I was wrong. Very good fellas.

Ken Burns' outstanding series 'The Civil War ', calls the battle of Gettysburg 'the greatest battle fought in the western hemisphere '. I think I agree; much respect to the soldiers who fought in that July battle. Lincoln, in his brilliance, gave one of the most perfect speeches in the following November. I plan to re-read it today in remembrance.

Love watching these videos. My friend and I visited Harper's Ferry then Gettysburg the day after the March on Washington back in August. These videos will completely alter my perspective the next time I venture to any of these amazing places! Keep up the exceptional work!

Is there any documentation as to the names and addresses of the African Americans who were living in Gettysburg during the Civil War? Any list of the names of the African Americans who were kidnapped by Lee's army and sent into slavery? Did any of them return after the Civil War?

From what we've gleaned from Battlefield tour guides: Yes there is. They also owned farms and I believe some located near the East Cavalry Battlefield. We heard tales that Custer's first assignment was to protect blacks in the area from the Reb kidnappings but damfino how accurate that is. For some odd reason none of the more popular RU-vid CW channels hardly if ever visit the majestic and amazing and historic East Cavalry Battlefield. BTW: There is a church nearby there that Custer used as a field hospital according to one guide we conversed with. I'm not spreading scuttlebutt, I'm just an armchair CW enthuthiast, just info we learned from guided tours dunno the accuracy.

I stayed at the Gettysburg Hotel for a National Regiment civil war reenactors meeting with a friend. . Parked in the parking garage. What is the name of the tavern inside the hotel, that was original from the civil war period? You really give lots of interesting information here. Thank you!

Lee and Davis would of been better off fighting a Long guirilla war than take on the industrial union army. using smaller units in the forrests woods rivers lakes and streams and permit occupation of the cities. the south used it up its most precious man power and resources fighting battles head on ad defending cities. which lead to a fast demise those efforts didnt affect the georgraphy. the union would just throw more irish immigrants into battle. the south in a guirilla war targetting the politics would of been fighting till 1875.

I have heard stories that after the battle, the smell was so terrible that many town residents had to wear masks. They would soak the masks in lavender to hide the scent of death as they buried thousands of corpses in the July and August heat.
