Good explanation of Ryan's swing, and also excellent caveats to go along with it. We all should strive to develop our own swings and NOT try to copy the pros, especially the men. If we should follow any pros it should be the women of the LPGA, we, male amateurs, more closely resemble their swing speed, ball speed, carry distance, and shafts. The male pros are so far out of our league it's ludicrous to try to emulate them. In fact, to try to do so is not only futile, but extremely detrimental to our game. Cheers.

Jon Rahm is sorta built like Ryan Fox. Shane Lowry as well is a big guy. Can you do a swing analysis of Nicolai Hojgaard ? He has a really simple swing and generates insane levels of height and distance.

This video makes me think that it's nice that golfers can create an unconventional yet functional swing that makes sense for them. I think we can get to feeling that we have to have the textbook looking swing that everyone demonstrates on youtube. I do some things that might now be conventional but I know they work for me. This helps me to accept the swing I have worked out and which is effective for me.

This is such an interesting way to analyze a swing. Horizontal power vs Vertical power depending on body type and skill levels. Never heard this type of talk before, but really like it. Good vid Mark!
@PetSKi67
@PetSKi67 Год назад
I’m thinking one direction more to this equation, which is the rotation. Body rotation and arms, trail shoulder internal rotation. If you would have the extreme strong grip, there is no need for crossing over the arms in the down swing, but to hold the face angle open instead of closing it by arm rotation. If a high capper or just a beginner grabbed a club like that, he didn’t have to turn at all thru, but to throw the fists at the ball being closed by his shoulders.

Lee Westwood comes to mind when I think about widely built guys along with John Daly, Rahm, etc. It’s so good to see this analysis. Everyone is so different and each person is so unique in their stature and build. I am an average height man, but I’ve got a wider build than others and it shows in the difference between average chest size vs waist. That being said, I’m not as big as some of these boys… Thanks for the analysis Mark! It’s really educational. Would love to see an analysis of Hosung Choi! Has to be the most interesting swing on any tour!!!

The exact same thing happened in the Tennis world. When more neutral grips were used, they would teach you to hit a forehand stepping forward with your left foot to basically be in a closed/square position. With the arrival of graphite and tennis changing into a power game, grips got MUCH stronger, and then we started hitting with the body way open - this is effectively what Ryan is doing. Trevino & Lehman - swing overlay with Ryan video idea
@jamiesloan7259
@jamiesloan7259 Год назад
Former tennis player here. You nailed it. I played with a lighter racket. I top-spinned the crap out of my forehand, and second serve. My body was very open, on my ground strokes, with a more strong, racket down type grip. However, I used to play this old guy that hit a very flat ball. He had a heavier racket. He basically hit straight through the ball on his serve, and forehand. You had to control the points early, or that deep, flat ball would get the best of you. lol
@wallstreetoneil
@wallstreetoneil Год назад
@@jamiesloan7259 Every once in a blue moon you might play against someone like this - it was VERY RARE - it was the Jimmy Connors flat stroke that came at you almost unrealistically fast given what looked like a punch-type swing. McEnroe was able to do this on his return of serve when he wanted to take the ball quickly on the rise and follow it into the net. This was my era and I played at nearly that level - part of how they were doing this was they strung their rackets at very low poundage and while it was terrible to use to create big top-spinning shots - it worked remarkably well at punch-type flat shots - they used mid 40s pound string rates. It was really an all-or-nothing style because that type of setup required that type of shot to keep the opponent from attacking
@jamiesloan7259
@jamiesloan7259 Год назад
@@wallstreetoneil Yep. Very rare. He was the only person that I ever played, with that type of technique. And you’re right…. That low knuckle ball seemed to get to you very fast. Yep. I’ve experimented with this before. Strong right, and left hand grip puts the thumbs behind the shaft. Very powerful feeling! However, you better be able to get the hips extremely open, and have a ton of right side bend to manage that face, or it’s pull/hook from hell. lol. I’ve even experimented with extremely weak grips, and found that you’ll need to sorta stall the body rotation, and hit with more level shoulders to get that face releasing sooner. You have to figure these things out, to get good at golf. Experimenting with “extremes” will teach you sooooo much about body movement, wrist conditions, path/plane, and how to use your hands. Learn to hit the ball high, or low, or fade it, or draw it on purpose. Remember…. The medium flight, straight ball is the hardest shot in golf to repeat consistently.
@wallstreetoneil
@wallstreetoneil Год назад
great post - I've done all the same experimenting. Being a former tournament-level tennis player and an ice hockey play, I've converted 1/2 way to this Ryan Fox-type style - which is also a Trevino-type style. It can be done with a weaker left grip (Trevino) if you are able to really bow your left wrist. For me the big thing was to use Midsized +4 grip, convert to a baseball/tennis grip, and the feeling is much more tennis-like with the right hand delivering the speed and face angle control into the ball as the hips open as they do in tennis and while taking a slap shot in hockey. In hockey, we hold a weak top hand so the bowing was easy for me, but I have converted to a slightly stronger right hand to give it more of that tennis feeling - and the 10-finger + bigger grip is what really makes it work for the right hand
@jamiesloan7259
@jamiesloan7259 Год назад
@@wallstreetoneil That’s interesting. Being athletic, and playing other sports is very helpful. I play golf with a weak/neutral grip. My stock shot is a fade. I hit it by flattening, or slightly bowing the left wrist, and turning hard. The hard turn kicks the club out a bit, giving me the path I need. Then, I simply just hold the face off with some right side bend through impact. My tennis, and ping pong experience has definitely helped me with golf. I never played hockey, but I can definitely see the correlation.
@wallstreetoneil
@wallstreetoneil Год назад
@@jamiesloan7259 being that you were a tennis player, you can instantly be decent at golf if you just convert it to your tennis feels. Sounds like you have a perfect gameable setup - weaker bowing left grip to control the face and reduce face rotation & then just power into the ball with the right side in a slight hold-off sort of way - total gamer setup. As you were a tennis player, if you want to get a 'feel' of the modern young PGA tour swing, which is really just a top spin tennis forehand, and really a throw-back to Trevino's swing, then at your next range practice session, try a 10-finger grip to really make your tennis feels dominant, and then practice hitting tennis looping top sping forehand type shots, which is really the Matt Wolff golf swing, where you take the club back in a quite toe-down fashion, just as we do in tennis, like Morikawa, Hovland, Keopka & Wolff, and then keeping it toe-down/shut, hit a looping topspin tennis forehand delivery, all while thinking entirely about your right hand dominated tennis swing. I find it also helps to play the ball slightly more forward than maybe you usually do so you get that tennis feeling of moving into the ball. It is this mini-looping action, followed by firing the elbow as we do in tennis, with a strong face to offset the firing elbow (also like in tennis), that you see now all over the PGA tour in the young long hitter.
@jamiesloan7259
@jamiesloan7259 Год назад
@@wallstreetoneil I’ve actually fiddled with the Wolfe motion before. I managed to hit some low draws, but I could tell that it would take some practice to make the strike, and direction “playable”. I could definitely produce some speed with it though. I have lower back problems now, so I can’t always swing the club the way I actually want to. On days when I feel stiff, and immobile I’ll actually stand tall to the ball, break my arms in a very relaxed backswing, and then just approach the ball with a narrow, steep swing. I just add left side extension to shallow it out through the hitting zone. This isn’t very powerful, but I can manage it around the golf course, with a predictable high, weak fade. I’m pretty creative when it comes to the golf swing. You sound like you are too. lol
@wallstreetoneil
@wallstreetoneil Год назад
@@jamiesloan7259 yup - if your right side bend isn't on that day, the Trevino style, big head drop, rotation for speed isn't happening - a nice, high hands, gravity-golf swing is better - many ways to skin a cat and still shoot par

He doesn't slide, he seems to rotate although not much in the backswing and he then uses his body as a piston and comes up and down a lot which is a natural way for us to move. His grip is perfectly aligned with his wrist too at impact, again another natural feature, just like using a hammer to knock a nail in towards your target. Shawn Clement explains it properly here - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-h3Ma_bNVS7w.html (especially after 11 minutes in).
