Tourette's syndrome -- why it doesn’t define me | TEDxAlbertopolis

Find out how Jess Thom is "changing the world one tic at a time" in this inspiring TEDx talk.
Thom has Tourette's Syndrome and says 'biscuit' sixteen times a minute. A visual artist and a graduate of the Royal College of Art, she founded Touretteshero to celebrate the humour that can emerge from Tourette's, challenge misconceptions about the syndrome and encourage people to familiarise themselves with the creative opportunities it presents.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

***** Do you notice your tics, or are they just like blinking and breathing in which they go unnoticed until referenced? I know I have a tic where I constantly clear my throat, but I nearly never notice it.

+Thomas Katz Sorry im so late to respond. I didnt get a notice for your comment. My tics are very noticeable. Both my motor and vocal tics are very pronounced. I also curse and have echolalia. And Like I mentioned in the comment above I have The same kind of epileptic like looking episodes that Jess described in the video. Full body tics that look like epilepsy but are tourettes.

Rikki Glasgow I have almost the same thing. I want fully diagnosed with Tourette's but I do have tics. I don't have coprolalia, but I have twitch like movements that I can hold back every once in a while but it comes out eventually. I will roll my eyebrows, flick my right hand pinky finger forward, and blink. The first tic I ever had was snapping. I was soon told that the tics would wear off when I was 12-13 years old, but I'm now 14 and they have just gotten worse. It used to just be one tic at a time, like snapping. As of now I have a combination of shaking my head, blinking, stretching my thumbs, raining my eyebrows, crinkling my nose, and making rhythms out of breathing. If that makes sense. My tics will get worse with stress, anxiety, and tiredness. It's sometimes hard to fall asleep when I'm stressed because I can sometimes wake myself up with a shake of my head.. it's amazing to find people who have the same experience as me, so I know I'm not alone.
@jerihill4739
@jerihill4739 7 лет назад
I deal with this too, I also have two vocal tics, but only one which comes out often. I have a diagnosis of Chronic Tic Disorder, no Tourettes, this is because my vocal and motor tics are not always present like 24/7, but also because I can go through stages of having no vocal tics, (I always have motor tics). So I do understand.
@dallinwitt6358
@dallinwitt6358 7 лет назад
Kei Hill it's really nice knowing there is other people out there that understand what each of us are going through.. once you say Tourette's people automatically assume that you can't control your body and are prone to saying uncontrollably ridiculous things, but really it's very different (depending on your type of case..) my vocal tics aren't words, more like a soft grunting sound.. but still to people I have to tell people I have a neurological disorder rather than tics, because they think the insects and then it's really awkward.
@jerihill4739
@jerihill4739 7 лет назад
Yes! my vocal tics are a grunt/gulping noise, and I make an f or k noise with my mouth a lot. I also pop my lips. A lot of my tics I have managed to almost turn into "normal" movements, but obviously not all. And my friends got used to it. I do experience what I call tic attacks, (liken to the seizure but less violent), and my friends have learned how to help me when those happen. I have taken to explaining it is neurological also, and then say I make odd or strange noises and do odd or strange movements.
@nikolaihatesu
@nikolaihatesu 7 лет назад
This sounds so similar to me. My first tic was in first grade when I couldn't stop raising my eyebrows and looking up. For the most part my tics have only been very mild since then such as muscle twitches in my legs and very small vocalizations, kind of like tiny hums. For the past 5 or so years its been rubbing my lips against a protruding tooth of mine. Even after getting braces to make my teeth straight I still rub my lips across my teeth, causing jaw pains sometimes. I always knew I had tics but never got diagnosed with Tourettes. I totally understand the rhythmic breathing thing! Sometimes my muscle twitches will be in "circular" rhythms too.

My tics make me very socially anxious so this is my worst nightmare, I have so much respect for her. I’m so glad she talked about tic episodes, although mine are different (I punch myself in the head and jaw and I often have to be restrained) it’s such an incredibly important thing to talk about because a lot people don’t know the darker side to the disorder. Im also really glad she talked about coprolalia (I myself have it) and how it’s only a small percent of people with Tourettes that have it, even though when most people think of Tourettes the associate it with swearing.

When people are able to ignore my tics when I'm talking is one of my fave things. It helps me stay focused on what I'm saying and not get side tracked by my tics if someone points it out. Usually when someone points it out I tic more. It can be hard for some people to ignore it but it's very humanizing when it is ignored. I don't mind a laugh or two about it though if it's not while I'm talking and it doesn't take over the topic of what I'm saying. If ppl didn't laugh or have a small chuckle it'd feel like I'm just being obnoxious lol as I laugh at my tics all the time.

I have tourette syndrome and was diagnosed in L.A. by the leading doctor on the subject (i forget his name - im 30 and i was diagnosed at around age 6) I had verbal tics, humming and whistling but that subsided with age. I however have motor tics where i nod my head, pop my wrists and ankles and blink a lot and twitch my muscles in my neck and clinch my jaw, everything has to be even - sometimes it takes a while to realize im doing it, usually when it hurts or someone stares at me. I havnt watched the video yet but I searched tourette syndrome art because I was interested in why I am such a visual artistic person. I am a pro photographer and everyone I talk to always says that my eye for photography is amazing. I'm not very social and I'm a self learner. It's a curse sometimes because I'll stay up for days sometimes learning something like photography, photoshop, ect. It is very hard to do something that I'm not interested in, it's like it's imposible to concentrate. I failed through all of high school then went to job corps and got my ged in 3 days and went to a tech school for graphic communications. While in school again, I took a photography class and have been into it and doing it ever since for the last 4 1/2 years. I can visualize everything and post process in my mind the entire process of what im going to do in photoshop to see a final result before even taking a shot. I am street smart and book smart but my social skills lack. I was a loner growing up because I got made fun of a lot. If you have tourette syndrome, USE IT and think of it as a GIFT and not a Desiese. :) look up AEON Artistry on facebook :)

JOSEPH FALCONE I'm waiting for the 12 month period to end (at the end of the month) to be formally diagnosed with Tourettes. The worst bit is at school you have to explain to people what it is and why, but you can't say 'I have Tourettes' because you don't. People come up to me and ask me to tic for them, which I explain cannot be done on command but people do not like listening. I do MMA which is a mix of martial arts like kickboxing, sparring, ju jitsu and weapons and if helps occupy my mind and stop tics.

I have TS, although not to this severity. Although I know I have way more than five tics a minute, if I calculate that it's an average of 80 million over a lifetime. I think this is what triggers anxiety and stress that I feel over time. This has become very overwhelming recently. It's comforting to read other stories of it and non sufferers willing to be educated.

It’s heart breaking to know that people go through this. It has to be one of the most hardest things ever to deal with. People judge a lot so that’s one of the reasons why it’s hard. And they can’t help what they say,and even some of the things are very inappropriate but it’s ok because that’s one of the effects. I just really wish I could see most of the people with this illness and talk to them about it. I know I’m gonna cry because it breaks my heart soo much and if I could I would take it all away for all of them truly!😭💔💔

I still think of this Ted talk a decade later and just LOVE Jess. She is an absolute shining example of working with a condition rather than demanding that all others change for her. That is serious strength, humility, and frankly the BEST of humanity.

i had a tic once because I was given haldol at a psychiatric hospital and it caused a day-long tic where my neck would twitch I couldnt control it. From my eyes(my POV) it looked like the world shook quickly in a circular motion clockwise and counterclockwise in a twitch like fashion. It was very stressful and any stress made them so much worse. It is hard to explain but this is what it feels like: YOU THINK YOU CAN CONTROL BUT YOU REALLY CANT. WHEN YOU FIRST GET IT, YOU THINK ITS WITHIN YOUR CONTORL BUT AFTER A WHILE YOU REALIZE YOU ARE NOT IN CONTROL. THESE THINGS ARE INVOLUNTARY SEIZURE-LIKE MOMENTS WHERE EVERY TIC IS LIKE A BLUR IN YOUR MIND.

Honestly this woman is such an inspiration to me and probably many more. She doesn't let her tourettes get in her way of living and she even finds some of her tics amusing. Which is a big help to people with tourettes because they can now find peace with theirs

As long as people in music and football industry are earning millions of dollars per month and PhD students and researchers as much to pay for rent and food and nothing more, this is going to be the condition = no cure for many many diseases. People should change the way they think and spend money.

Humor and creativity is indeed the answer! I have Tourettes aswell, but in a much lighter form. Don't worry I still get pointed and laughed at quite frequently. I have lived my life with humor being my key to being able to communicate and be among "normal" people. Humor is the only thing that helps me get away from the freak I am...fml

What triggers tics? Is it anxiety? Or do they happen without any triggers?
@FrancoisvanderMerwe
@FrancoisvanderMerwe 9 лет назад
Nothing triggers is, it is always there. It does sometimes increase when under stress or anxious.

You are awesome for doing this, and you are a really good speaker even with your condition, honestly if I went up on stage I would be a stuttering mess and wouldn’t sound as clear and descriptive with my wording as you. It’s cool to see people have to push themselves harder than the average person and yet still be able to accomplish more than one.

I had several tics in my youth and adolescence. I didn't understand what it was and was told by an adult that I looked retarded. It frightened me and made me and hurt me. I still have some minor tics, however, God helps ease them.
