Thank you Erin for such an inspiring video! I grew up with Longwood practically in my backyard and visited regularly, but have never been to Chanticleer 🤷♀️ Loved all the many beautiful containers throughout all these places - so incredibly inspiring that my head is spinning with ideas! Thank you for sharing!
Oh Erin, these gardens just make my heart smile! And I am ashamed to admit that I am just 1 1/2 hours away!! Chanticleer here I come. And ever since "reading" his book, The Layered Garden, I constantly try to emulate Mr. Culp's style. This was a gift. Thanks
I watch quite a few video's from Garden Design with David Culp. House look different from what I remember and garden. David went into quite detail about the work he did on the hillside but did not see it in your video's or I missed it. Thanks for sharing all the video's really enjoyed watching your you tube video.
This video was a feast for the eyes! Like you said, each garden was unique and interesting...reflecting each gardeners' personalities and creativity. There is so much inspiration there. Gardens with the gorgeous surroundings of nature just bring me peace. Thank you Erin, for sharing these tours. ♥🌻🌲🌼
This was such a wonderful compilation of the gardens at the Fling. You hit the nail on the head - nothing is more inspirational than visiting gardens where you can immediately see the love that has gone into it, regardless of the size, style...or weather! One thing I can't believe is that I actually missed that pool area at Chanticleer...how on earth did that happen? And that underwater shot was awesome! PS Also loved our little side-adventure in the shops at Peddler's Village - it was a true pleasure spending that bit of time with you.
Wow! Amazing and such a beautiful video. Those banana trees! And there is such a thing as Autumn crocus?! This 5b gardener needs some of that 😊. Thanks for the inspiration. Bookmarked for repeat viewing this winter.
YAY PA ❤ to bad you hit it during the storm 😮 You were in my neck of the woods and I am embarrassed to say that I have not seen Chanticleer yet 😞 thanks for sharing all the great gardens😁
Thanks so much Erin! Although I live in Oregon now, Chanticleer is 2 hours from my hometown in PA. It is on my list. I so appreciate your narration of all these gardens. I went to my neighborhood garden tour this past June. I totally get what you mean about the personality of each garden. The feeling of all the love and care that went into each garden especially the older ones...20, 30, 40 years with the same gardener . Very special. Full of Soul. I sometimes catch a glimpse of that in my garden of 24 years. I am trying to pay attention more and get quiet for more glimpses. This video reminds me to do just that. Thanks.
Erin, I'm speechless in the beauty and tranquility of the private gardens. There's nothing else like them!! Thank you for sharing. ❤❤I love the shade gardens and the containers.
OMG ! These gardens were amazing...just amazing. I can't even imagine what it was like to be there in person to see and experience all of the beauty, hard work, planning, etc that went into developing the gardens. I think, for me, the hosta hill mass planting was the most memorable. That surprised me too, as I'm not usually a big hosta person. Your thoughts on any plant can be amazing when planted in mass really came true for me when I saw that hill with all of the hostas. I am assuming that most of these families have gardeners employed to keep everything looking good all of the time. I was also surprised how the container gardens looked so lush and full. The whole video was inspiring, that is for sure. I just got out of the hospital from a serious bout of pneumonia and watching this really lifted my spirits. Thank so much for sharing this trip.
Oh Erin, thank you so much for sharing these gardens with us. Based on your recommendation, my husband and I went to Chanticleer in the spring along with Longwood Gardens. I have to go back to Chanticleer to see the kitchen and cut flower gardens. You must have been buzzing with ideas when you got home from touring these gardens. That's exactly why I love watching your videos and others because they inspire me. Again, thank you so much!
There's nothing more to say that hasn't already been said in the comments. But I will tell you that this video was so beautiful and calm that it became so emotional with the combination of your footage accompanied by your choice of music. I know I will replay this many, many times over as it provides tremendous inspiration and also an 'escape' from the world these days. ❤Thank you.
What a great video Erin! Thanks for taking us along for the ride. And this (by the way) is how to include music in a video.subtle nod not distracting. Loved it all.
Although so vast and opulent as Longwood is, I will never tire of visiting Chanticleer for the ever changing gardens. I was told (I don’t know if its true) that the 5 designers are given free rein to create their visions every year. They certainly do not disappoint.
So sorry you didn't have more footage of Brandywine Cottage. David Culp is a genius and a wonderful, kind man. His book The Layered Garden is one of my favorites. Northview is great with the English influence and Jenny Rose Carey is another fantastic person. So glad you had fun in the garden capital of the US. Come back to see more!
Wow, what a great video Erin! I loved that you let the gardens speak for themselves, with just enough VO to guide our attention. I couldn't make the Fling this year but this video went a long way to compensating for missing such a great event. Thank you!
Thank you Erin for showing us these amazing gardens. I will be sharing your video with many of my gardening friends. I got many great ideas for next year.
To this day the best private garden I have seen is nearby on a 50'x150' lot. It is so well planned and executed that you would not even know you were in a city and you feel like you are in a different world.
I’m so happy I fell upon this video, I grew up in Kennett Square on a farm that directly bordered Longwood Gardens. I’m 70 now and I was a kid back then believe it or not Longwood was absolutely free. You just walked in and walked around school trips went there almost every year from the local schools and other places and from our farm that was just to the north of Longwood on Valley Road. We could hear the chimes from the chime Tower at 5 o’clockevery night
What a treat ! Thank you Erin. I'm watching in Cheshire, UK , so it's wonderful to see some of your great Americian gardens :) I love a quirky garden :)
Thank you for sharing! Yes! Chanticleer is THE BEST!! I’ve been to gardens near and far and this is one that I most favor. So nice to see all these gardens!
Great tour Erin, like a walk down memory lane! Although there were a few shots I didn't even recognize from some of these gardens 😂. So easy to miss things! Thanks for sharing, it was great to meet you in person! -Amy
Oh my goodness! I’ll be watching this several times! Yes PA is a beautiful state, with so much history, wonderful antique shops, unbelievable garden, mansions (open to public). I can’t get over all the tropical plants in those private gardens❤ (KH)
There is so much to see in public gardens within an hour or two from center city Philadelphia. And so much history, including women in horticulture. The average person can have Erin’s experience (hopefully minus the tropical storm) for not a lot of money.
I'm gunna have to copy that Longwood container garden! The purple & lime one. With the big giant tall palm or whatever that is. Oh My Gosh it's DIVINE!! And I already have half the plants, so yeah, I'm definitely copying that for next year!!
Erin, really enjoyed your garden visits. You have been very creative in putting this video together. Just watched a second time - so much to take in. Spectacular gardens. Thanks
The Garden Conservancy used to host many “open” private gardens here in Chicagoland. We visited many incredible gardens in the past. Sadly, those days seem to be over.
I can’t wait until my garden matures with its larger trees, I love a textured, green garden with only the occasional touch from flowers, as I live in such a hot environment.
Can you tell us if the purple firework looking stems at about 16:00 were a bloom or were they just a decor in the pots? And if they are indeed a flower, can you tell me what they are if you know? Thank you very much.
A lot of people asked about those when we were there. They are metal, clearly modeled after alliums, and the homeowner couldn’t recall where they were from. I feel like I’ve seen something like that at Gardener’s Supply.
Instead of a large container with a curly willow , what about Corylus avellana 'Red Dragon'? The red leaves would be quite dramatic (before they turn green). Thanks for the video. The GardenDC podcast with Jana Milboker described many of these gardens. Nice to see them here.
Love the moss spheres looks like they planted vines in them to train up the chain? Maybe? Also, do we see a raked pebble garden surrounding your banana plant in your future? I am sure yours will have deer hoove prints in it to add to the ambiance. I kid ha ha, well it's Wisconsin. I loved the tours thanks for taking us along. :D Have a lovely day.
Absolutely love this! You should come to Buffalo in July. Open Gardens throughout the month. Each weekend municipalities have garden tours. Final weekend in July is the city itself. Amazing-mostly smaller gardens- you can see all month long. Garden clubs from throughout the Country come here. Buffalo in the summer is spectacular. Chanticleer and Longwood are amazing. I need to get back to Philly and see some of the other 30+ public gardens in the area. Thanks for bringing us along ❤️
Thank you for this lovely gift to your viewers. My dream is to tour Chanticleer, maybe next year. (I live in CT so not too far; I'd make a long weekend or 4 or 5 nights out of it.) At the 23:00 mark, do you know the name of that cool bubblegum pink plant (alocasia or caladium) at the bottom of the container (darker pink veining)? WOW. I've never seen that one.
Road Trip! Thank you for sharing these beautiful photos. Also, I love the music playing softly in the background. Would you share your soundtrack with me?
As a west coast landscape architect for 50 years, II would call most of the 'gardens' shown here 'plant displays' designed and implemented by master horticulturalists. There is special emphasis on flower displays. Gardens, on the other hand are outdoor spaces - whether created by flowering plants or other materials - that create an artful or designed space. Classic gardens have an overall structure that creates a visual and physical setting. Flowers are incidental The gardens designed by Rich Haag at the Bloedel Reserve on Bainbridge Island near Seattle and a good example, as are many of the classic Italian gardens
W🤩W! Amazing - thanks so much for this compilation! I used to be a member at Longwood but never saw any ‘behind the scenes’ - so interesting! I’m only 2 hrs north of Philly, so def need to get down there and check out Chanticleer and Stoneleigh as well 😊
Wow, what a treat for you! 14 gardens. Thank you for sharing. I was excited to see a plant Painted Palette Persicaria) someone gave me this year at Chanticleer-now I know it's great one! :) So many wonderful ideas at these gardens.
So enjoyable seeing these gardens full of plants and ideas, thanks Erin…I’m a horticulturist at a golf course working on designs for 2024 this really helps….would love to do Chanticleer and area garden tour …does anyone have suggestions on a group tour or Erin would you ever consider doing this area?
I love Coleus, so many textures, leaf shape and deep bright colors...always look great and thrive all Summer long...it is my go to if and when I buy annuals🥰
Loved this tour…and your music selection. You’ve inspired me to use container groupings next year when I saw the groupings at Longwood. Wondering what the dark leaf plant with tiny white flowers that first appeared around 21:20 and appeared in several containers in that area. Loved its airy appearance! Assuming its a shade plant? Thsnks for your help and inspiration!
Driving to dc next weekend. Train to nyc. I was going to stop in Philly and drive to chanticleer but decided I’ll go next spring. I drooled over my Chanticleer book for three years now.
Thank you! We have been gardening in a less scuptured style but others in our area have almost cookie cutter styles. It is refreshing to see what we are attempting on a much larger scale. I wonder how many of the private gardens you toured bring in outside help. I found much encouragement and inspiration so thank you!
These gardens are set up and maintained by professional gardeners! No lazy rich woman is going to work that hard ! You didn’t scratch the surface of Chanticleer! And you have to start on the left facing in !
So stunning! Thank you for the tours. Your music and editing and voice over were wonderful as well. Does anyone have an idea what the plant/groundcover is at 14:24 underneath the redbud?
Do you know when construction at Longwood will be complete in 2024? I’ve been itching to get back but wanted to wait for that since it’s not the closest trip for us.
Hi Erin, looks like a great trip despite the rain. Think I recognize the moon gate at the at the beginning of the video. Is it in Carol V. .s garden built by Andy S .?
Thank you for sharing, Erin. I’m feeling so inspired and it will be tough waiting 6 months to putter around in the garden again and try new plants and plant combinations. Do you know what the grass between the stepping stones is at 27:15?
Thank you for sharing. It was very interesting, and relaxing. I don’t have gardens like that where I live, so it’s a pleasure when someone takes the time to share, and express their pleasure in other people’s beauty.
so beautiful, thank you for sharing with us! a friend who is a garden designer has grown a curly willow in a pot for many years, and I have always wanted to copy her. need to put it on the list!
