Galena Illinois is a small town founded in 1826, in fact, one house from 1826 is still being used just off Main street. Join us on our walk later in the afternoon after the crowds had thinned out a little. We have added some places we enjoyed and recommend if you come.

My husband and I were just in Galena yesterday and ate at a Mexican place and had the super nachos and they were delicious 😋

We are there on a regular basis. No issues with cell but have US Cellular.

I graduated from Galena HS . It was changing them, but is now a yuppie nirvana . A soulless playground for rich airholes .

One of our favorite towns ! My parents used to take me when I was little and now we’ve been going. Thinking we are going back in May maybe. I saw you did mention Mackinac Island being too touristy .. my question for you is did you stay on the island ? And also what time of year did you go ? We went opening weekend in May and there was not a lot of people and once the ferry boats left for the night and the all the gift shops closed it was so nice there ! We went again in October and was a bit more busy but again I feel the place becomes more magical once the ferry’s for the day leave and it’s only the people staying on the island.

We went at the beginning of October, we had been in the UP for a while and were working our way south. We went for the day and we left on the last ferry and I can see where it was getting quiet at the end the atmosphere changed. The only way we would return is to stay in the Grand Hotel which we really enjoyed visiting. I think also our opinion of the experience being touristy is colored by the fact we have been to 30+ countries, all over Europe and quite a bit of Asia. We seek out authentic off-the-tourist trail experiences so this part of it was not for us. Had we biked the other parts of the island we would have enjoyed that more I think. We will be back to Galena and bring Maria's parents, her mom will really enjoy it. We plan on doing a spoon carving workshop next time and checking out some of the other things to do there. I think like Macinac staying there after the crowds leave might be nice, sitting at a restaurant sipping wine and enjoying the evening.

Staying at the Grand hotel would be an amazing experience ! We hope to eventually do that too. Both times we went we stayed at the Murray Hotel on the main st and liked that it was right there by everything .. reminded us of the Desoto House in Galena (if ever interested we do have a video of it). But that all does make sense and I do agree compared to the places in Europe off the beaten path it is for sure touristy.. I think we love it so much cause in this area it’s the closest we can get to something so different. Plus just loved the horses and no cars was great with a 1 year old! Did not know they had a spoon craving class in Galena! That sounds fun! Hope you enjoy your next trip there and all your future trips !

@@StephyandTimWayco check out galenaspoonco.com/. We spent 30 minutes inside his shop just chatting and he can recommend a lot of things to do in the area as well. No cars is nice, and we loved the style and colors of the homes there. The key might be staying a few days so you can enjoy the outer areas slowly.
