Things I missed in the overview: - The MGU is also available as a 9-speed version - Torque output was wrongly stated. Check Pinion's technical MGU overview for the correct answer :) - The wheel swapping (29" to 27.5") should be done in consultation with your bike mechanic as the different size can impact range, speed and compatibility - Battery fast charging is about 2h (20 to about 90%) - Pre-Select can calculate the correct gear for your speed by setting a preferred cadence in the settings

Changing the wheel size can also alter the bb height so that has to be taken into consideration too.

Thanks for the review. I’m not currently in the market but it’s very interesting. It was clear that the manufacturer had put a lot of thought into this product and also that you had actually tested it in real world circumstances, rather than just riding it ‘round in circles and then writing about it. Good insights. Cheers!

Glad it was helpful! We loved that little trip and I’m happy it painted a better picture of what the bike is capable of.

Awesome video, can’t wait for my Pamir Select 4.1 since the colour of the One isn’t mine. Quick question, may I ask about ur hight and the size of the test bike ? I‘m right between M and L myself.

Cannot change gears when the battery is empty. 😮

We didn’t drain it to below 10% but I imagine Pinion has thought of this. If you’d do this manually then I’d say shut off the battery at 5% and you should be able to shift for a long time.

If battery ist empty you can still do about 1000 shifts

Multi day trips with e-bikes are a nightmare unless you are credited card touring. I have tried. Nothing wrong with spending all your nights with a roof over your head and an electrical socket nearby, but it’s not for me.

I’d say that if public charging infrastructure was a thing on the entire route one might pick, it would already be much more doable! But right now it is indeed a big challenge to do it while enjoying independent merits of bikepacking.

Hello Tristan, Some ideas/questions: Could Pinion build in a means to charge from the motor to the battery on downhill or flat rides? Using this to charge the battery could act as part of the braking mechanism. This would help extend the range of the battery. Also, if the bicycle is in a stationary position, would it be possible to "ride" as both an indoor trainer and or as a means to charge up the battery without using external electricity power? Another idea: is it possible to put a dynamo hub on the rear wheel of the Tout- terrain bicycle equiped with Pinion gears to recharge any batteries on the long distance trekking that you do? Again could you use this on downhill runs (maybe as a part of the braking mechanism) or use as a stationary bicycle trainer/power generation? Maybe have a rear rack that swings down to the ground to allow this to happen or a centre stand to lift bicycle wheel clear of the ground. Downside maybe to much weight. Cheers from Australia.

Excellent run down on the Pamir. The controls are in a good position and being able to integrate your phone is genious. Being able to take the battery out of the bike is a must. The range is not quite as far as I would like. FYI looked up the Pinion MGU. 85 Nm torque and 1000 shifts after the battery is done. This would be a super bike for touring Europe or parts of the US. Maybe not crossing the Gobi desert, but still a lot of places to see.

How about a fail safe? Is it possible to shift if the power is out? Or if you lose or brake the display for any reason.

What a fantastic machine, so well thoughtout, thankyou for showing it to us in such easy to understand detail, a great video as always.

Excellent review video. These combo of bike and drive is the perfect solution for bike travel for those of us that appreciate the assistance of motor assist. As an ebike tourer myself, an important thing that you didn’t really discuss is extended riding beyond the range of a single charge. I usually ride more miles in a day than a fully-charged battery allows, which requires bringing a second battery or re-charging during the day. My ebike (not the one you rode) does not recharge very fast, so my only option is to carry a second battery. But, if I am correct, the Pinion system charges pretty quickly, which should allow “topping off” during the day to extend any day’s range. That is VERY important for anyone considering using an ebike for touring or bikepacking. I suggest emphasizing this in a future video.

Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll keep that in mind. Tout Terrain will offer a 500wh additional battery that can be used on the frame, giving a total of 1200wh available to the rider. That’s massive! Combined with the ~2h fast-charge time (which ages the batteries faster but is good while on a tour) it’s a fantastic combo.

E- bike for long distance tourimg is still quite new. For travlling to very remote places. Where electricity isn't always available. For example, the Pamir region. Will be interesting to see how e-bike develops for bike touring in the future.

How does the front fender attachment work at the top? The fork seems to have some kind of bridge like a suspension fork but I can't identify it properly
@tristanbogaard
@tristanbogaard 3 месяца назад
It’s actually bolted in the fork, with two bolts on each side. They’re around the same height as the tire sits in the fork. A strong connection that’s nicely hidden away from sight.

I own a Riese&Müller ebike and have heard so many times from other R&M riders that their fairly new belt snapped. But also some have ridden way more than 15k km. This pinion motor changes things a bit. The the gearbox is before the belt drive. I suspect that it might put less strain on the belt. Especially when you use almost equal size chainring and coq. I am interested to see how well the belt fairs with this system. Also something to mention is that many of the R&M bikes that had a belt snap were also full suspension. So that might also play a role in the premature belt failure.
@tristanbogaard
@tristanbogaard 2 месяца назад
I’ve heard stories on snapped belts on e-bikes too and… I’m pretty sure it happens because people put way too much pressure on the belt by starting in a high gear (and letting the battery do all the hard work to get them up to speed). Like this, the tension can be immense. Best is to always try to be in the right gear for your speed - the MGU makes that super easy with automatic shifting and the Start.Select setting that puts you in a low gear once you stand still.

It should be harder to break a belt than a chain

The battery seems very lightweight for the volume, is it full of battery cells, or is it a base model battery that you have to upgrade?
@tristanbogaard
@tristanbogaard 3 месяца назад
I don’t know, but judging from the weight it is completely full. Maybe I make it look easy… The cool thing is that you can get an additional 500wh extender battery, which would give you almost double the range!

I explain range in the video. It’s highly dependent on where you’re cycling as terrain, ambient temperature, gradient, weight and assistance mode all play a role.
