How tow anti-tank missiles work | how anti-armor missile work | wire guided missile how it works | First produced in 1970, TOW is one of the most widely used anti-tank guided missiles. The TOW anti-tank guided missile is still deadly after nearly 50 years of service where it proved itself as a very effective weapon. The TOW anti-tank missiles were responsible for many destroyed tanks, mostly Russian-made.
The TOW missiles are typically used by various companies for heavy anti-armor work but still the TOW is able to knock-out even the most protected tanks. The weapon is used in anti-armor, anti-bunker, anti-fortification and anti-amphibious landing roles.
How TOW anti-tank missiles - Anti-Armor Missile Work
In its basic infantry form, the system breaks down into a number of modules: a folding tripod mount, a launch tube (into the rear of which encased missiles are inserted), a mandatory daysight tracker unit, which can be augmented with an optional AN/TAS-4 or AN/TAS-4/A gas-cooled night sight (or an all-in-one tracker unit on the M41 ITAS version), and a traversing unit, which mounts onto the tripod and carries the launch tube and sight, that also includes the weapon's trigger and the bridging clamp, which mates with the missile's umbilical data connector. In addition to this main assembly, there is a separate FIRE CONTROL SYSTEM (FCS) module, which performs all guidance calculations, and a battery pack to power the system. These two modules link to each other, with the FCS then linked to the daysight with a cable.

I was one of the persons who was required to do maintenance on these systems, they are fascinating pieces of work. It is basically a giant computer that guides the missile... one system alone is worth about a million, and each round costs around $70k.. also TOW stands for Tube launched Optically tracked Wire Guided system. Its crazy cause I always used to walk around the training areas and notice a bunch of wires laying around and never understood what they were for.. then you realize they are the wires that were attached to the Missiles, you can see them clear as day in the video here.

The javelin is fast to put into action and is portable by a single soldier, and fit what Ukraine needed at the time, I heard that the T.O.W. being wired cannot be jammed like weapons receiving digital signals, and the shape charge emits a red hot jet of plasma like no other when it hits, great range and power

They never see it coming. If you're in a tank, engine running, all buttoned up, the only way you know you've been targeted is when it is too late. Spent years (1986--1993) as a TOW gunner and never had to bail, even at night...when we are most active.

How does the TOW missile work?? Pretty frickin' good! I spent 7 years as an 0352 and that thing NEVER let me down. The shockwave propagates at 56 THOUSAND feet per second, enough to cut a hole thru nearly a meter of rolled homogeneous armor plate.

Best advice I got from my instructors at Fort Benning in 1979 was track the target not the missle which could easily happen.
@user-qs4ti1bh6e

And track as little as possible. Always lead the target and let the missile do as little movement as possible. A good TOW gunner makes the tracking beacon look like a tracer round.

The missile knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't. By subtracting where it is from where it isn't, or where it isn't from where it is (whichever is greater), it obtains a difference, or deviation. The guidance subsystem uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the missile from a position where it is to a position where it isn't, and arriving at a position where it wasn't, it now is. Consequently, the position where it is, is now the position that it wasn't, and it follows that the position that it was, is now the position that it isn't. In the event that the position that it is in is not the position that it wasn't, the system has acquired a variation, the variation being the difference between where the missile is, and where it wasn't. If variation is considered to be a significant factor, it too may be corrected by the GEA. However, the missile must also know where it was. The missile guidance computer scenario works as follows. Because a variation has modified some of the information the missile has obtained, it is not sure just where it is. However, it is sure where it isn't, within reason, and it knows where it was. It now subtracts where it should be from where it wasn't, or vice-versa, and by differentiating this from the algebraic sum of where it shouldn't be, and where it was, it is able to obtain the deviation and its variation, which is called error.

Not exactly, I guess. When warhead is detonated, wire does not stop. Speed of missile is up to 320m/s, so wire continues to move forward to target by inertia. Maybe explosion changes direction of wire - more or less.

The Ukrainian AT missile platform "Stuhna-P" can be operated 50 meters away from the launcher itself, which already makes it much better than the russian kornet.
@biocaster777
@biocaster777 6 месяцев назад
Granted. It is newer, also Belarus has near-identical missile system, Shershen. And for some reason, Russia consider Kornet to be "too costly" for mass production. Which caused me to be very confused since a beam riders shouldn't be that much of a cost issue like Spike or Javelin. Hell, even Poland has its own Spike copy.

So this missile stays connected with a cable when it’s fired?
@tigertrap2269
@tigertrap2269 Месяц назад
Yup. The operator had to hold the cross hairs on the target until it hits. Any movement of the cross hairs would have the same movement in the missiles flight. When my brother was in the Marines, he said the missile was so sensitive that you could actually see the operator's heartbeat in the flight of the missile. If you moved the cross hairs too fast, the missile could snap the wires and the missile would uncontrollably fly off.

@baileesmith2007
@baileesmith2007 3 года назад
In theory yes. In reality the wire is very thin and is destroyed a few feet back from the “attacking “ missile. The defending tank would be surrounded by dust and dirt from explosion. Not to mention *if* the wires are clipped after firing they would spool somewhere between the attacking tank and the defending tank
@unregisteredgamer9695
@unregisteredgamer9695 3 года назад
Yes kind of but where there is one tank there is most likely more if not that infantry and thats after rocket hits the concussion from the missle is over and the dust settles now they have to move the canon to the tank is and fire but by then they were probably hit by a SABOT round or 2 so it doesn't even matter
