Good video. Good demonstration of the basic law of physics: Drag force is proportion to square of speed. Last time I was towing in heavy traffic in the 30-40 mph range, and MPG shot up to 15,16 mpg.

Great coverage i will share your link. We like towing at 64-68 MPH lol in our 19 footer Surveyor Legend. There is no one out there that has simplified this better then you. Our towing captures better MPG's but then again my TT is lighter and less wide. This is huge now that gas is basically at $2.99 per gallon on avg. Recently did 2,010 miles of towing from Miami, Fla up to Tennessee, North of Nashville. And my fuel cost was just below $500. Round trip.

Hi Jesse, thanks for stopping by and for the great comment! It's definitely an interesting topic and something that surprised me when I ran the numbers. Happy trails and good luck on your travels. PS: the Surveyor Legend is a nice trailer!

This is something that people need to determine on their own as there are too many variables to account for. Different vehicles with different engine types, like diesel vs gasoline, with different transmissions, pulling different trailers of different dimensions and weights. Using this logic of air resistance alone, you could make the case of going slow against the wind, but faster with the wind... But obviously there is more to it than just that.

Great points @crbvegas I really appreciate the comment because it's helpful to begin a dialogue on this topic. I agree there are a lot variables and perhaps should have mentioned that in the video although this video is a pretty accurate assessment of my personal experience. I would say also that generally speaking, for most travel trailers in most conditions, there is going to be a sweet spot MPH range for maximum fuel efficiency. More often than not that sweet spot will likely be slower not faster. One other thing I failed to mention in the video (which I did address in previous videos) is simply the safety factor of going a little slower when pulling a trailer. Again, thanks for the comment...really appreciate your input and your willingness to join the conversation. Happy trails :)

@@IdahoVoyager - I think on my previous setup (half ton Ram + 26 ft trailer ) 60 mph was probably close to the sweet spot though I would go quicker than that whenever the roads were smooth and wind wasn’t knocking me around. I have gotten rid of that truck and trailer combo and am in the market for a trailer for my new 3/4 ton duramax diesel…. And I have no intentions of going less than the speed limit with that thing…. I haven’t gotten to test a real heavy load with it but empty, that thing can do all of 85mph or better at 20 mpg. Anyway, I found your channel because the lance 2075 is one of the trailers I’m most interested in purchasing.

@crbvegas You’ll love the 2075, it’s a great trailer. Yes if you match the 2075 with a 3/4 ton Duramax…that’s a completely different animal that should allow you to cruise down the road with not a care in the world. 🙂

@@IdahoVoyager - That is exactly the idea. With that half-ton set up I had so many white knuckling experiences, like whenever a tractor trailer would blow my rig around like it was paper... I hated towing it. The trailer I got rid of was this chinsy Jayco - I initially went cheap on everything because I wasn't sure if I was going to take to the hobby. I'm glad I went that way first because I learned a lot: mainly, that I want a really powerful and heavy truck - and a far better quality trailer that was still, relatively, light weight but was, actually, four seasons capable. So yeah, I'm definitely looking forward to towing with it, it's just super hard to actually even see any of these trailers in person. Everything is way marked up and sold out and seems like the market will be that way for a while. I haven't been able to actually find the different trailers I'm cross shopping to see in them person before pulling the trigger. Right now I think I have my options narrowed to the Lance 2075 and the Outdoors RV Backcountry 20BD (Similar type of trailer but is much uglier inside, but has an onboard generator and 100 gallons of fresh water...). HOPEFULLY SOON...

Usefull information. Thanks! Question. Do you have any experience of using a wind deflector to improve your MPG? Does it work?
@IdahoVoyager

Thanks for the comment! Great question….no I have not considered a wind deflector but it’s an interesting idea. I’ll look into it! 👍🏻

Thanks for this. We tow a 2021 Grand Design Imagine 2800BH with a 2021 Nissan NV3500 passenger van. It has the same engine/transmission as your titan. We took a trip from Oklahoma to Florida last November and I was getting 4-6mpg at 70. I've been able to squeak out 7-8 at 65 on short trips. I'll definitely try 60 on the next one. We have a 28 gal tank.

I appropriate you simplifying this. I've been wanting to run the numbers as well but just haven't gotten around to this. Yes there are many factors but most setups will follow a similar curve. Thanks.

@ismael alarcon Thank you for the comment. Happy to help and although my analysis is unique to my situation, I agree with you that by and large, most set ups will follow a similar curve. Well said👍🏻
