I already reviewed the “wrong” servo, now I test the “right” one …
↓↓↓ Complete description, time index and links below ↓↓↓
I wanted the cheapest, full size, metal gear, 180° (!) RC servo you can get. I didn’t know back then that there are any other types of servos. And so I bought and reviewed a while ago the Tower Pro MG946R 360° (!) servo (link below).
But you learn from your mistakes (sometimes). So this time I got myself a Tower Pro MG995 180° (!) servo. Unfortunately it was a dud and I had to buy a second one that actually worked. It’s not a precision servo, but metal gear and powerful.
00:00 Intro - already tested the MG946R, now it’s the MG995’s turn
01:04 Accessories - that come with it
01:30 Dimensions - including weight
02:09 Replacement - the one I bought was a dud, so I got another
04:26 PWM timings - it only rotates 169°, not 180°
06:27 Speed, idle / no load current - at 4.8V and 6V
11:36 Stall torque - at 4.8V and 6V
15:26 Teardown - it does have metal gears inside
18:30 eBay listing - for the second one I bought
19:03 Wrap-up - summary and bye

Nice review ! The tear down at the end was especially interesting.

Thanks! The first time I reviewed a RC servo some RC model guy immediately commented I should take it apart to see if it really contains metal gears (made an addendum with a teardown to that video). So now I made the teardown part of the review ;-)

How do you use the brass inserts and rubber bumpers?

Have a look at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-e0PBZdv0hJE.html , there you can see in a close up how the rubber bumpers and brass inserts fit into the mounting holes of the servo.

Can you tell me how to examine minimal angle and its pulse width, and also the maximal one? I order it because i tought it is 180 degress servo, but it is not as you showed :(
@robertssmorgasbord
@robertssmorgasbord 3 года назад
I'm showing that at 04:26 . I just increased/decreased the pulse width until I reached the minimum/maximum angle.

@robertssmorgasbord
@robertssmorgasbord Год назад

Can you share your program sir? I've been using normal servo program, and another tutorial but my servo MG995 doesn't want to move. Only glitches rotation about 1-5°

Yeah... My Arduino often occured a delayed reading code, because the PWM signal i think... It's happen only if I connect some big output like Driver Motor with 12V, Servo 10kg

Hello Robert, In your opinion, which not too expensive servomotor reference can really do a 180°. Thank you in advance and good day

so I'm on my 3rd mg servo 2 mg996r's went bad after a month of use as a steering servo in a 1/10 RC a friend gave me a new mg995 so fingers crossed this one lasts longer than a month
@robertssmorgasbord
@robertssmorgasbord 2 года назад
Well, I wish you good luck with your MG995. If something goes wrong with that thing, it will probably the tiny potentiometer inside that the electronics use to determine the current position of the servo.
@moorhen6156

@@robertssmorgasbord well the 995 is faster more accurate and stronger so I think the 996's I had were clones maybe or from a bad batch

@@moorhen6156 Well, the Chinese cloning the Taiwanese - not unheard of 😅 And yes 996 should be slightly faster than the 995, at least at 4.8V.

thank you you are the best thank you. I read many pdf MG995 Datasheet from tower pro manufacturer .but it does not say how many milliamps it uses with load .and without load. the MG995. Please could you send me the link where the manufacturer says that ???? but the manufacturer does not say how many MA. I read and read many pdf of the manufacturer, and it does not say the milliamps of the MG995 TOWER PRO servo motor. Please could you send me the manufacturer's link where it says how many milliamps MA it consumes with load and without load.
@robertssmorgasbord
@robertssmorgasbord 2 года назад
It says right on the manufacturer's page you linked "Current draw at idle 10MA", "No load operating current draw 170MA" and "Stall current draw 1200MA" (right side under "Specification:"). So the current when operating will be somewhere between 170mA (no load) and 1200mA (stalled), depending on the load. What milliamps exactly are you searching for? And could you please stop posting your comment trice?

These crappy servos are about 5 euros here metal gears n are not precise
@robertssmorgasbord
@robertssmorgasbord Год назад
Indeed, they are relatively loud and run not very smooth (precise) compared to the ones with plastic gears. But I really needed something that could take some punishment torque-wise (I'm not using it in a RC model but in a programmable laboratory shaker).
