Because replacing batteries and starters and losing a few hours to cold starts is vastly cheaper than rebuilding an engine.

Because ether has absolutely no lubricity. The best thing to use is WD-40 and yes it does work well for a replacement for ether.
@kevinamstutz6118
@kevinamstutz6118 3 года назад
Proper use with a zerostart system and the orfice sixed per the engine displacement not just emptying a can of starting fluid into the intake will not cause engine damage. Hell yes if starting fluid is not used correctly like anything will cause problems. My reference is a using a properly installed system not dumping a can into the intake. Please do a video on melted batteries, melted wiring and burnt starters.

That poor starter! I run service calls for a wrecker service here in balmy Michigan, a little ether really saves the starters. And don't give the "it ain't safe" crap. If it wasn't safe than why did Some farm tractors come stock with ether injectors? When I worked at the airport in GSE equipment we had ether injectors on all our diesels. You gotta be on starter 3 or 4 by now

If I every kept the starter cranking like that my boss would've fired me on the spot!! Worse thing for the starter!!
@castirondude
@castirondude 3 года назад
Totally agree. Ether is perfectly safe for the engine in modest amounts and at low temperatures. Where people get in trouble is when they either use a boatload of it, or use it on engines with glow plugs. You CAN NOT use BOTH ether AND glow plugs, it has to be one or the other. Some of the older cats had glow plugs but the 3406B doesn't so that's not a concern.
@castirondude
@castirondude 3 года назад
BTW I've started my 3406B in 15-20 degree weather no problem, if all is in good shape they are pretty capable at cold starts.

Run synthetic oil, install an engine heater and you would never have to abuse your starter like that. I used engine heaters( both webasto and espar) for 30+ years on my Cats and Cummins. Always gives you a quick, clean start.

New York City diesel buses got rid of traditional starters and switched to air starters. They did this because drivers would keep cranking and cranking they had too many buses go on fire.

Turning it over for as long as you did isn't good. You have to let the starter cool down some. As i asked once before does the 3406B have provisions for glow plugs? I live in Canada and they help a lot. when you get a chance go to Victoria Truck Spotting and Midwest Peterbilt Group channels and see some other 362s.

I'm surprised that Kenworth didn't have remote Booster pegs. My company got a few Kenworths of over the last two years and virtually all of them have remote Booster pegs. The ones on my own in particular are right in the steering wheel well just under the hood, in theory I don't even need to open the hood to get to em, though I usually do for sake of ease of access. Most of the company trucks have it on the back deck just behind the cab. As for your starter.... Uh running it more then a minute at a time is one of the fastest ways to burn it out fast. They don't have the thermal mass to absorb running so long.

Seriously, you should buy a small generator, maybe 3k, and after installing a tank-style block heater, you can start the generator then let the tank heater take over for an hour, you truck would start instantly. Better than burning out $600 starters. Those Kat heaters can be bought for $150 off Kat's website for a 2000 watt version for big truck.

There is a very simple setup where you can use a high voltage/amps DC connector wired directly to the battery to make jump starting/charging the battery easier when it is in a hard to reach location. Something like the Anderson connector works well as it can't be reversed so once wired to the battery can be put into one of the side compartments for easy access. Swap out one side of the jumper cables for a connector and it is a very fast process to hook up to Orwell. Could also be done to the company trucks if they have in house mechanics as it is simple once they know they can and ordering the parts in bulk makes the process cheaper.
