Because the Titan has so much power, you can get into trouble with your transmission during climbs. This is true of a lot of other trucks too. The truck has enough power to pull the hill in a higher gear, but your transmission will overheat from the stress. Also, if you don't have a transmission temp gauge, not only can you not monitor the transmission, you might not be able to tow more than around 7,000 pounds compared to the 9,000+ capacity of the big tow package. Big Tow has changed names, and some packages include the 3.36 gears (as opposed to 2.94) so if you are unsure, contact Nissan and they should be able to help you figure out for sure.
One way to check for gears is 70 mph test. 2000 RPM equals 3.36 and 1700 rpm equals 2.94 gears. That isn't set in stone, but it's a good indicator, as well as the tag on the differential.
If you do have a standard, non "Big Tow" with no convex mirrors or trans temp gauge, you can get a trans temp gauge like this one:
amzn.to/1DrKqjP
I would also recommend some kind of pod to house it nicely.
I also did a review on the Tekonsha Prodigy 3 controller, and this one has the Titan wiring harness included: amzn.to/1BWQXow

I recently purchased a Titan and it was funny when I got to work the next day. I casually mentioned to someone that I got a new truck and the word was out like fire. The Ford guys "what you get a Chevy junk?" The Chevy guys and the Ram guys all similar comments bashing everything and I'm like "naw I got a Titan" and everyone just shut up and nodded their heads and agreed "those are good trucks"

Titans and Tundras are good trucks. I'm also a fan of Ford's newer Eco-boost trucks. For the money I spent on this truck, I have no complaints, especially after Bilsteins (amzn.to/2fyhtvG I paid $100 more). A similar used Tundra would be twice the money. Hard to stay out of the throttle, it's a sports car with a bed! Watch the exhaust manifolds, they tend to crack (depending on year) which is probably the worst thing about these trucks. Oddly I found the dealer to be the best price to get it fixed at $1250 per side(it's a NIGHTMARE to do yourself), or you can do aftermarket headers if you don't live in California, just be sure to install a resonator. Headers, resonator, mufflers, Uprev, and new intake is a hot ticket, 50+ horsepower as I understand it. With no resonator, the exhaust can sound like card in spokes (CIS) under full throttle. Less cab drone too. Welcome to the club!

So true. I'm a retired ASE certified master tech and have worked for all the munufactures over the years. The Tundras are the best all around trunks but my 05 Titan is the most fun and confortable. Best vehicle I've ever owned and I will never sell it

Tow haul mode also controls shifting, stopping overdrive until all conditions are optimal to engage overdrive gear. So it will not shift into overdrive unless certain conditions are present and that gear can be used effectively. The computer takes information from many sources like Calculated engine Load versus throttle angle. YAW sensor,engine temperature ,transmission temperature and several other inputs.

@VickyGeagan
@VickyGeagan Год назад
It has one. Mine uses the radiator as a transmission cooler besides using the engine. The transmissions lines run through the radiator. The major design flaw with it is if the radiator develops a crack in it, radiator fluid will mix in with the transmission. Ultimately causing transmission failure. If you do notice a crack in your radiator of a change in the transmission. Have your transmission flushed out and the fluid changed immediately. To save the transmission as well as replace your radiator.

I have an 06 titan with 460000 km. bought it with 20000 km. I love this truck! just recently I came into my first trans problem. But turns out it was just a simple crack in my rad which leaked some coolant into my transmission.. And that was only because I slammed the front end onto a boulder offroad. Anyway. Easy fix. Unexpected! But relatively harmless. I have always followed the tips you mentioned. And these tips go with any truck! Not just nissan. Maybe a little more important with the titan due to the gear setup. But sorry to say mr. 390merc65 buying a Ford will NOT be in my future purchases... Unless it's a 65 Ford merc ;)

You are right about manually downshifting to 3rd...but for the wrong reasons...The trans shift logic in 5th (OD) and 4th gear is as you increase throttle say for going uphills, the trans doesn't downshift, it un-locks the torque converter and when that happens the the heat build up begins. Yes it will eventually downshift, but even if you are in 5th gear, it will downshift to 4th, but with the converter un-locked. Here's the real tip: On any hill manually drop to 4th gear, and as soon as the trans feels like it downshifted after that and the RPM climbs a bit (the converter just unlocked) manually drop it down to 3rd gear...This will keep the trans temp from climbing and it tows awesome uphill in 3rd (or 2nd if really needed)
@ThunderTravels
@ThunderTravels 7 лет назад
Love when people argue semantics. My suggestion was to pull grades in 3rd to avoid overheating the transmission. That's the right reason. It may not be your reason, but it's the right reason none the less. If I was suggesting 3rd gear for maximum cuteness, that would indeed be the wrong reason.

I loved my Titan too. Owned it 9 years, no major problems. It towed great. Plenty of torque. The only weak spot was the crappy Dana 44 rear end. Actually the 44 was ok, but the cheap open diff carrier was junk. It's "posi" came from the computer applying brake pressure to the wheel that was spinning to try to get the power to the non spinning wheel. If you invest in a good locker out back, you'd never have a problem back there. I towed a 4 place covered snowmobile trailer, a 28ft camper trailer and a car hauler. Pulled everything fine. Other than 10 MPG, which is about avg when pulling a trailer. I did wish it had an "automatic" setting on the 4 wheel drive switch. It only had 2wd, 4wd high & 4wd low. My Chevy has an automatic setting which is nice if its right at 32 degrees out and as you go over a bridge and you hit a patch of ice, it will kick in and save your butt.

+Boost Fiend The 44 is a weak link. The truck has plenty of power for sure. I just took the truck to the snow recently and found it to stick pretty well with the Hankook Dynapros. Had to get on it harder than I expected to break it loose. A pleasant surprise.

some of the earlier 2000-2010 gas models had some problems with towing (im not too sure on the speciphic years), even if you got the towing package the there was a faulty design with one of the inlet lines for the transmission and it would get clogged for some reason and over heat the transmission if you did towing with it. my dad owned one and went through 2 transmissions in under a year. these models also had problems with exhaust leaks the manifold was prone to slightly warping and would cause a leak. This is why i dont like the gas powered ford trucks, their current diesels are pretty awesome though. so i could see why some people might not like ford, they are also pretty expensive to buy so that might put off many others, but if you get one of their better models the models are pretty cheap to take care of

I have the 2013 Titan SV without a towing package or transmission cooler. I have a 6000lb camper which I pulled over the Rocky Mountains and down to West Texas in 120 degree heat with a headwind and pushing 33×12.5 tires on a 3" suspension lift and added leaf springs. No stopping except for gas and piss. The transmission temp never passed half at any point in time. The trailer sits perfectly level and you can't even tell it's there. Just carry gas cans it drains that 24 gallon tank FAST! I do wish the radiator had more performance though... did fine towing but I can't idle it all day on the jobsite with the A/C running in that heat lol. Also the OEM battery exploded and the drive shaft fell off, but minor stuff. It tows great, and people compliment my ride on a daily basis which is pretty cool. My last 97 Chevy 1500 died at only 160k and it was mainly driven by my dad who drives like a grandpa, and my 08 F150 got traded in at 280k and still going strong! My '13 Ram 2500 Cummins was great but wayyy too expensive to maintain and an awful ride. Got stuck alot too. I just rolled over 80k on the Titan we'll see how it does! I'm sure putting it to the test just like all of my trucks. 08 F150 takes the cake so far for lack of maintenance to abuse ratio (mainly used as a power company off-road right of way inspection vehicle, changed the oil every 30k miles, was sad to let it go at 280k! All I ever did was bare minimum basic maintenance.

I hope my driveshaft doesn't fall off! lol. It's a pretty good truck overall. 270,000 and going. Bilstien shocks make the ride nice. I also went with 32" tires to get a lower tire weight. 40 pound tires make a world of difference in the ride. Tried going stock size (44 pound tire) and it killed MPG and ride. Back down to 32" P-rated Hankook Dynapro ATM's and the ride and handling when way up. Not as cool looking, but comfortable. I have nerve issues though, so I'm extra sensitive to a rough ride. I'll probably never do a 3/4 ton or higher. Ride is too rough with the unsprung weight.

great points in the video, thanks! Now to the comments, mine tows just fine.installed Bilstiens to stiffen the rear a bit and like someone pointed out , other than 10 mpg it works great. @@ThunderTravels I've done a lot of research on this. According to Nissan, the transmission "tank" in the bottom of the radiator is designed as an initial warmer in order to get the transmission fluid up to operating temps in cold weather. Transmission fluid has a best operating temp of 150*-170*. The Titan's 5.6L engine's operating temp is 195*. If the transmission fluid gets that hot there will be a problem. At the bottom of the radiator it's probably not 195* at least let's hope. Nissan's engineering design is to attempt to "balance the temps" on the engine and transmission but also to get up to operating temps quickly. I have been told but not researched it that ALL Titans have a transmission "cooler" sandwiched between the AC condenser and the radiator. It is small, but it's a further effort to "balance" the operating temps, There are videos here on RU-vid that explains the proper use of the tow mode and to downshift from OD while towing and even to use 3rd gear if the tranny gauge starts climbing into the upper range of too warm. Having had tranny issues with my Titan I have totally bypassed the "radiator warmer/cooler" so as not to EVER introduce coolant into my transmission, again! As always, YMMV.

This video was made by someone that hasn’t done much towing. You do not need to manually shift your transmission when towing. I’ve had the same 2006 titan for over a decade and after towing thousands of miles including through many mountain passes I have never had overheating issues with the transmission. Deciding to not use overdrive should be based on how your truck is performing. If the truck downshifts excessively or has trouble maintaining highway speed, take it out of overdrive. Tow mode makes barely perceptible changes to the shift points. Use it or don’t, honestly it probably wont matter.
@ThunderTravels
@ThunderTravels 4 года назад
Towing in overdrive is a really bad idea. You go ahead, but telling others to do so is pretty awful advice. You might not have had transmission failure yet, but if you have been letting your truck hunt for gears on grades, or kept the RPM's under 3,000, you have certainly shortened the life of the transmission. Just because you haven't had a failure yet doesn't mean you are doing it right. Some people don't change their oil ever, but their car still runs. I had my class A commercial license, drove semi, hauled raw milk, bulk cement, refrigerated, and dry van. Hauled a 40 foot fifth wheel (not with my Titan) and several cabin cruiser boats. I have conservatively done well over 200,000 miles with a trailer of some sort behind me. Quite an assumption on your part.

@@ThunderTravels Why don't you show everyone where at in the Nissan vehicle manual it says never to use overdrive while towing? Certainly if it's so important Nissan engineers would have made sure it was in the manual right? Let me save you some time, it's NOT in the manual because it's wrong. You're passing on old wives tales that you learned from some other unknowing person. This may have been true 40 years ago before modern computer controlled transmissions, but it does not hold true on modern vehicles. You're probably part of the "I change my oil every 3000 miles no matter what" crowd too.

I'm pretty sure the titans not even rated to tow 12k so good luck with anything lasting towing that much.

If you put it on third will it make the truck go slower?
@syedhussain3810
@syedhussain3810 3 года назад
it won't make the truck slower but you only gonna get to a certain speed before you hit the redline, when you are towing going uphill you should be in third gear I do lots of towing, and on the normal roads staying in 4th is the best option, staying in OD would make the transmission shift with little changes to the wind or slight uphill whereas 4th will work the best and you always feel stronger when towing .

@ThunderTravels
@ThunderTravels 7 лет назад
Depends on your gears. At 70 mph, if you're at 2000 rpm, probably yes. 1700 rpm at 70 mph and you probably have the regular non big tow.

I have a Armada platinum . Going to be towing rough 4K lbs. I'll be traveling on i95 mostly flat land nothing major. Would these tips work for me or just simple D mode and tow mode? Also I have the leveling suspension. My trailer is 7x18 2klbs dry weight. Would you recommend a drop hitch ?
@ThunderTravels
@ThunderTravels 7 лет назад
Always tow in 4th, even on flats. OD is a no-no when towing. Hitch height is all about making sure the trailer is level, or less than an inch higher in the front than the rear. I have 2 trailers I tow, and they require their own hitch to be level. One is a 2 inch drop, the other a 4 inch drop. You want it level when loaded.

How do high rpms prevent air flow?
@ThunderTravels
@ThunderTravels 6 лет назад
Going slow up hills reduces airflow, and higher RPMs "help" with air flow and reduce load on the motor and trans.

Now I'm not trying to be rude, but I just don't think this truck is set up to tow, I completely respect the fact that Nissan is your choice of brand, everyone has there personal preference and yours is Nissan, and I respect that, just like I would want you to respect my personal preference. Now don't get me wrong Nissan like Toyota is a good choice if you want a truck that will have no MAJOR issues. I just do not think they are set up to tow. I personally think that if you need to tow a 5,000 pound plus trailer, you should go with a truck like a F-250 diesel or 2500 Ram or GM diesel, Just because your truck is rated at 9,000 pounds doesn't mean its gonna tow 9,000 pounds with good fuel mileage. Since diesel these days can tow 15,000 pounds plus, with SRW configurations, and since they have low end torque they will tow that same 9,000 pound trailer a lot more efficiently. So in reality even though I don't think the Nissan Titan is really set up for towing, (I'm talking about the pre cummins bodystyle) that doesn't mean FORD, or RAM, or GM, is going to tow it without a tranny problem, it is just least likely because all the American brands put bigger axle ratios on there trucks, its a pretty dead giveaway that these PRE Cummins Nissan trucks aren't set up to tow because, if it was, Nissan wouldn't even think of putting a 2.94 axle ratio. Now once again I respect that you prefer Nissan and I'm happy you like it and use it, and I'm not trying to be rude or say your truck sucks, It's just that, I like many other Ford, Ram, and GM guys dont think the Nissan titan is set up for towing. Happy Trucking -Austin Thacker

I understand your opinion. Titans have a different transmission setup, much lower first gear ratio, enabling higher rear end gearing. They put the "gearing" in the transmission, which is the reason for the video. Overall drive ratios are not out of line for towing, it just looks that way at first glance. I don't think you can say ANY vehicle that is rated for 9,000+ pounds is not "setup" for towing. By default it has to be. A diesel will do it easier and more efficiently of course, I'm a big fan of having more capacity. But I sold my 99 7.3 PSD 4x4 because I needed a half ton for the ride comfort. Less unsprung weight, MUCH better ride. Compared to a similar year gas F-250 (8-10 cyl) or other 3/4 gasser, I get reasonable mpgs. It's not ideal for a 8500 pound dry weight trailer, a 3/4 ton would be better. But for a 3000-6000 trailer it gets the job done comfortablely. Usually non Titan owners are skeptical, which is understandable. I make no claims that it is the "ultimate" tow rig, but it's awfully decent for a half ton. Very livable day to day.

+Austin Thacker I guess you never heard of Venom then. These trucks are way under rated. www.venomtruckpulling.com. I have out towed the 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks also. same truck is 5 years old now with over 20 points championships towing over 50,000 pound sleds!!!!! So i stand behind titan trucks 100% They are more than capable to tow.

I don't think it's fair to compare a nissan titan to a f-250 or a 2500 ram. I totally agree those are better choices for towing heavy loads but the Titan is designed to compete with Ram 1500 and ford f-150 and in that case it has very competitive towing capability. In fact it is designed to have a fifth wheel bolted to it. Now would I pull a fifth wheel with mine? Naw but I have heard of guys that have and say it goes and goes.

Austin Thacker I have a 2006 Titan.....tow a 6500lb fifth wheel and a 3 place atv trailer behind it with no problems....have for a few years and I live in Wyoming....two them up to the big horns too. I own a duramax that just sits couse I'm afraid it'll break when I use it! Has the lly and had replaced injectors 60k ago along with wire harness too....last week I had to replace two of the eight injectors and a fuel pressure regulator along with one side of the front end.....will never ever buy a Chevy again! Have never touched my Titan..140,00 miles....my duramax has 131,00 and I'm at 9k out of pocket!

take it from a mechanic. . if your looking to tow buy a Dodge. .lol.. I replace at least 3 titan transmissions a month. always keep a eye on the radiator because that's usually the reason the transmissions go bad. no fluid return

Bypassing the radiator with a heavy duty trans cooler is an easy preventative.

Take it from a ASE master tech, never trust a mechanic. At least 95 % of the "mechanics" that have been turning wrenches for say 30 years or more and claim to be pro's do not have the education or aptitude to even change your oil. Very true story. The easyest line of work to get into is to turn wrenches. A "mechanic" is NOT qualified to look under your hood. Even the dealerships have "mechanics" that should never touch a tool. So good luck finding a good tech becuase we don't get payed enough to stay in this industry filled with beer drinking slackers.

I do not know why I read the comment sections to these RU-vid vids. Every other person is a friggen expert and tries to call out everyone else claiming they know best. Some say the engineers from Nissan know best. Others say the engineers didn't know jack. Some claim to be certified mechs with 30 years experience others are ASE certified. BIG FRIGGEN WHOOP to you all. All I came here for was some ideas on and info on my dads 04 SE which I am buying from him with only 45,000ish miles on it. Now, I ain't gonna listen to any of you jokers. I am going solo on this one. Hmm, Han Solo. Hey, Star Wars - A New Hope is on right now. Think I will watch that. Squirrel...
