This November 2022 Town Hall covered The Society for the Study of Celiac Disease (SSCD), with leaders Dr. Lebwohl and Dr. Verma. The SSCD is a professional organization of physicians, nurses, dietitians, and allied health professionals in the US, Canada, and Mexico who specialize in the treatment of celiac disease and other gluten-related disorders. Find out more about how they’re advancing the proper diagnosis and treatment of these often-overlooked conditions.
Additionally, Dr. Lebwohl discussed the role of genetic testing for celiac disease and the potential future of genetic risk stratification based on recent research. Dr. Verma covered the ongoing debate over skipping the biopsy for the diagnosis of celiac disease, followed by a Q&A.
Speaker Bios
Dr. Lebwohl is an assistant professor of medicine and epidemiology and a practicing gastroenterologist at Columbia where he received his medical degree and was a fellow in digestive and liver disease, during which time he obtained a master’s in patient-oriented research. He is also the director of clinical research at the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University. Dr. Lebwohl has published numerous studies related to celiac disease and currently serves as president of the SSCD. He is also a member of the Beyond Celiac Scientific Advisory Board.
Dr. Verma is a highly respected pediatric gastroenterologist and medical director at the University of Chicago Celiac Center. Dr. Verma is a leading expert in celiac disease. She is passionate about creating a holistic approach to research that merges adult and pediatric research in celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and food allergies with clinical research. Dr. Verma also serves on the Beyond Celiac board of directors and is the upcoming president of the SSCD.

I was diagnosed by biopsy via endoscopy in 2010 when I was 14 with celiac disease. I recently had a gene test after seeing on my 23 and me I didn't have the genes for celiac - did another genetic test and was told I didn't have celiac disease. I'm very confused. 12 year diagnoses.. now being told I never had it due to 1 test.

I had a genetic test done and it said I didn’t have the gene, then I did a whole genome and was surprised to see “increased risk of celiac 4”. Weird. Are the genetic tests not always accurate? Are there new genes being found?

I think they should use the genetics test and patient reported symptoms

What about HLA DQA1:05 allele also known as Celiac Type 1? What about Celiac 2.5?

Can you have HLA DQA1 *05 and I have DH as well. It went away when I quit eating all grains. Is this Celiac 2.5?

My family, parents and 3 siblings all did 23 and Me genetic testing and are confirmed related. Only I test positive for Celiac. Can you explain why this is? I am the second child in the family.
