As early as the 16th century, Rothenburg became popular because of its city skyline. Rothenburg was even called “Franconian Jerusalem” due to its numerous towers and its location over the Tauber Valley. The old town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber is surrounded by one city wall. Six goalsand a few pedestrian doors lead through this city wall into (or out of) the old town.
The visitor can explore city wall or on the Rothenburger Turmweg. The tower trail is around four kilometers long and leeds you around the old quarter in around 2,5 hours. On information boards and in the texts of the Tower Trail brochure, the authors describe the history of Rothenburg ob der Tauber along the 42 towers in the city.
